If you wanted to know about the flying geese block, this is where you should start. We start the basics , one-at-time methoed and the 4-at-a-time NO WASTE method and then move to more advanced versions by using your fabrics the best way possible. And I have another sewing hack with masking tape at the end to make the trimming easier. I use the Omnigrid ½” ruler to mark the sewing lines. See link below to get yours. Links to the videos I reference are below.

I’ve been quilting for years and apparently have never made a flying geese (goose). For a guild quilt challenge I was assigned the King’s Crown block. After fussing with the geese that weren’t flying at all, I decided to get on you tube for help. This was the first video to pop up! LOVE your simple methodology to making (4) at a time. And NOW my geese have the extra fabric on top so I don’t lose my point when sewn together. THANK YOU! 😊 You made my frustration disappear.

Wow! my head is spinning with flying geese going in all directions. This is a video I certainly will be watching many times to gain and practice this approach to flying geese. I started quilt sewing 40 years a go and this is the most articulate and best illustrated development to the flying geese method. Karen you are a genius.

I have made HUNDREDS of the real traditional flying geese blocks. I'm talking cutting out triangles and hand sewing them into a block. But you just blew my mind with that orphan block idea! I may have to find someway to fit a sewing machine in my life and make a few orphan blocks on purpose! 😁😂😆

I've read and watched dozens of how-to guides on the flying-geese block. NONE of those other educators addressed how to "elevate" your cutting to produce successful flying-geese designs. This video explains so much. It was perfection. I'll never need to (or want to) watch another video on the flying geese block. Thank you, Karen. You're the best.

It's been 3 months since you made this video, but it just showed up on my UA-cam stream today! By sewing from the back, you've solved the problem of not having the 1/4" seam allowance needed at the top of the goose! I looked on line and in books for days to try to figure out what I was doing wrong and how to correct it. That problem held up my quilt till now when you solved it with this video.. THANK YOU!

Oh Karen! This is what I needed. I am having such trouble with my new, otherwise lovely Janome, eating the points of my geese. There has been cursing, there has been wine, there have been threats to send machine back to the dark storeroom! Now I will snip the point. I already watched this when it first came out but didn’t perhaps have the same issues. I knew I could rely on you xx

Hi Karen, I just finished listening to your blog about your progress on your paper piecing project, and making BLUE QUILTS!!! I keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. Thank God for the good news for your son, what a HUGE relief. I'm glad that you showed us that every time you went in to sew you ended up doing other things. It happens to me often also. But in the end it helps me get mentally ready for my next thing. What ever that is. I feel better after I've done some of these non-sewing things. Karen, I think you need a mental health break. You go at things so hard. Can you and a friend or 2 go have a weekend away? Just go poking around some odd little stores. Maybe just take yourself out for some poking around and some lunch. Where you sit DOWN to order, bring a new pattern to go over or a book. Just leave in the morning, knowing you have dinner set for the guys at home. ( I think you said your husband cooks) and walk around after lunch, read your book and do NOTHING MORE THAN WHAT CAN HELP YOU, KAREN HAVE A SIMPLE DAY FOR YOURSELF. I admire you very much, long before your world got turned upside down. You need to take a few breaks, I'm saying this because of the change in you. You are a wonderful person, your style of teaching is very coherent, like you've been a teacher your whole life. But now you're pressed, I want the best for you and your family. One day I'll write why I started to quilt. I hope that all of you stay safe from this Covid 19 and your son continues to get better. May God Bless you and your family, Debbie

I'm like Karen - embarrassed at how small of a scrap I will keep if they are already right-sides-together and ready to sew. Then again, if I don't want to save some, they go into a container for use as pet bed stuffing.

Valerie Bishop I had a good (albeit silent) chuckle when I read your comment about FGs coming out good being a crap shoot. Our state capitol grounds have a pond which a local population of Canada Geese call home year 'round. One has to be VE-E-E-R-R-Y careful when walking to and from the capitol building and over to the memorials built along the shore of the pond to avoid all the goose crap on the lawn and sidewalks. I may never sew another FG without thinking about this ;) .

Once again your video saved my bacon .... I need to make flying geese units the exact measurement in this video ... I could not remember the original dimensions needed and only cheat sheets I could find was for 4 at a time methods. This video worked perfectly.

I am so intimidated with this block. I have 5 flying geese rulers! The hack you shared would have saved me money. Another issue is that I like to have a 3/8 at the top of my geese just to see the point from a distance. I do like the idea of sewing on the back too. Thank you, thank you!

I've been working on the Ugly Quilt pattern. Thank you so much for it! I have decided this is the year of the Ugly Christmas Quilt and getting rid of all of the Christmas prints I inherited, that I didn't know what to do with! 4 tops down and a bunch more to go!

me too! almost finished with the top. I am a new quilter so I've never put one together before and don't know anything about what kind of batting to buy, random machine quilting (I've only had my machine since end of March), doing a border etc. I will let it sit til the quilt shop opens and watch lots of vids in the meantime until I'm brave enough to start.

@@JustGetitDoneQuilts almost done with my quilt top. this "ugly fabric" quilt was a great starter (lap size) quilt for me. I did the 4 across by 5 down. trial and error on my trimming. learning new things each week. your videos are so helpful. This little quilt is for my mom/her hubby for their camper. She likes pink flamingos lol and their camper is a bit retro. I can't imagine making a 'pretty' quilt with pink flamingos so your video about ugly fabric really fit the bill for me. I wish I could show you a photo of the quilt top - it really turned out terrific! Also, your picking fabric video for me was helpful in making this. thanks again for everything, Karen. Hope your son is doing well and responding!
