    Video is cool but I don’t really know what you’re talking about, you talk about his come up then his white fanbase as if it matters. He’s inspired by lots of white icons which mostly bred the rockstar image. The reason he hangs around lots of white people, is because white people are also creative. Sexisdeath and blackhaine are both apart of cartis creative team (not opium) and basically set him up for every appearance he makes besides shows and random pop outs, his manager is also white.
    edit: also I didn’t mention this but he has a tattoo of one his biggest influences who is also a white man and a punk icon.
    The reason carti has a mysterious character is because he doesn’t like people knowing what he’s doing all the time, not to mention he’s in atlanta and obviously has a lot of enemies. He’s also on a lot of drugs, like a lot of drugs everyday. This is why sometimes he looks like he’s not real or his eyes have no soul, his affiliates have commented on his sobriety recently and carti has been looking a lot healthier as people commented he looks normal. But carti is also very smart, he cares more about his image than his music or fanbase and a lot of his image is just faked. Right now and for the past few months after the fake rollout it looks like he’s going back to his NYC style.

    I dont know i feel like playboi carti only caters to white fan base visually with fashion photos and videos. This is probably because he likes metal and punk and the fact that at the time hip hop media was pushing the idea that mumble rap is punk rap so he leaned into it. Musically he works with mostly black artists and doesn't try to crossover his trap sound unlike for example kanye and drake which in the the past made music to appeal to white fans using music elements common in pop and rock to prove themselves to their white fans. Thats the main difference between carti and uzi aesthetically carti is trying to position himself like a white rock star

      very great points! i think white devoted fans are unavoidable in commercial rap...no matter how politically conscious one rhymes(kendrick ). carti's punk seems authentic to me, and his white rockstar persona...more a consequence of black punk history being forgotten. i dapple in the alternative/punk space, but never really felt comfortable for the longest time. bullying from black peers for being weird or "too white" and then racism from white folks. the donald glover blerd complex, but i matured and found a black alt community. that's my biggest gripe with carti's punk...it doesn't seem for me yet despite the cool music.

      I disagree. Why do we attribute being punk as white music? if anything, hes waking up the black culture to other types of sounds and genres to break black people out the box of rap and hip hop... Having different interests outside of rap, hip hop, and R&B doesn't mean hes trying to cater to white fans, nor is it "anti white" like people said in the video. Thats just ridiculous. Its like some people cant comprehend enjoying something other than rap as a black person, and then we knock them for embracing other things building false narratives and saying they are abandoning the culture when thats not the case at all....

    • @808dash
      @808dash 2 місяці тому

      @@solo4real688exactly! Punk and Rock derive from Blues which is black music. This has been stated by many white rock icons. Kurt Cobain even said in his journal entries “The negro’s contribution to rock is unmeasurable”. It was born from “negros” Robert Johnson to be exact.

    i completely agree with your reply about his "mysterious act" being boring. stuff like behind the scenes content, snippets, active social medias would be very nice. I follow Ye quite a bit and he does share stuff like that sometimes but it seems to only be when he is manic. Hopefully carti stops the mysterious shit one day

    Super underrated video this is great. Very well researched and thoughtful and I really wish there was more of this kinda conversation in the Carti community.
    I think that carti is an extremely interesting and talented artist, but as far as a person is basically a piece of shit, like it’s pretty much undeniable after all we know about him. But still, there’s something sort of intoxicating about how in an era where old movie stars are making tiktoks for ads and shit carti kinda stays out of the spotlight and preserves that old kinda audience-artist relationship we don’t get that much nowadays. It makes it easier to focus on the music not the man too. I dunno but good job!

    • @the_griots
      @the_griots  2 місяці тому +3

      yeah, despite the confusing rollout if he drops today the album will do numbers. he delivers when it comes to his music, and that's something you can't take away from him. also wonder if the mysterious persona is both ego-driven/aesthetic core...or carti genuinely being introverted-"art speaks for itself".

    I feel as though the things everyone is claiming are directed to white fans, belong to black culture in the first place ( rock // metal // vamp aesthetics ) all these things wouldnt be here without black culture first inventing it, i even think the edgy goth stuff may have been started by screamin jay hawkins.

    interesting approach on white validation and blackophilia - since I am from Germany I can tell you that over here obviously the fans are predominantly white as well but Carti received a huge spike in European fanboys in 2021, sometime after the release of WLR. So many teens here look up to mainstream US culture (not necessarily black culture tho, just current rap trends I would say) and Carti now is a part of that mainstream movement. In my opinion this hype around 0pium will die out eventually and only the core fanbase will stay but time will tell.

      i share a similar sentiment regarding mumble rap, but quickly got accustomed. it's a young person's game, and i do not want to be that one (older) hip hop head complaining. he's extremely talented, but the mysterious act gets boring. i want rappers to explain their creative process and art more.

    • @the_griots
      @the_griots  2 місяці тому +9

      the term is important because it celebrates and acknowledges black people in the punk and alternative space. whose participation was largely ignored and undermined due to racism. it's not new, and the word has been around since 2003. words are meaningful, and "Afro-punk", "Afro-Punk", "Afropunk" or "AfroPunk" has a lot of contextual history.
