Towards the end when you're tidying up and again put the mic close to the nest to hear their shenanigans I'm pretty sure you actually see the queen as there appears to be a distinctively larger wasp suddenly! You're a brave bloke for sorting that out, though 😂

@GosforthHandyman. Thank you for your work on this video. Saw a video on YT recently of an American guy dealing with a wasps’ nest under the eaves of his house. The nest looked something like a tiered paper lantern and the quite sizeable wasps were getting a bit agitated as he got near. He had an aerosol can of automotive brake cleaner which he proceeded to spray into the entrance of the nest at the main entry point. Almost immediately there was the sound of loud buzzing - wasps panicking maybe. And then silence. The guy broke open the nest and nearly all of the wasps that fell out were dead or dying. Inside you could see the developing grubs in their cells. Don’t know how he disposed of the remains after removing it, but I expect the nest and any “stragglers” ended up on the fire. We should all be vigilant as there are reports of (giant) Asian wasps coming to our shores maybe. They are already in the Channel Islands and eat our native bees. Many thanks again for risking life and limb to see off these wee beasties. Stay safe and well.

Hi Andy, just seen your videos having had the local council in to deal with a wasp nest problem in an identical location to yours - cost £74 with an agreement for a second visit if required days later to rid the nest of newly hatched? wasps. Not seen a thing after one visit. Little nervous that I may see this again next year! Loved the videos and subscribed. Thanks mate

I live in a bungalow and have a constant stream of wasps going in and out of an air brick, so the nest will be under my bedroom. They are not causing any trouble so I am leaving them, they dont return again. I did deal with one that had nested underground in my front garden, but not until I had been stung on an ear. It swelled up and stuck out from my head. That was Sunday, now Wednesday and its almost back to normal. Looks like you have your problem in hand, well done.

It's a fallacy that wasps don't return to the same nest each year. Very often there are queens and larvae that over winter in the nest and start multiplying again once the Spring arrives. A few years ago I got a pest control expert to have a look in my loft as I suspected there was a nest there. It turns out that there was and it was huge - and I mean huge. It was almost cone shaped right in the corner of the loft and it was easily the size in girth and height of a regular armchair. The Pest Controller said the nest was at least FIVE YEARS OLD, maybe more and the occupants numbered in the tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands - and they were vicious once he sprayed the powder on the nest. It took about half an hour to kill them all and my loft looked like a battlefield after the event. The feller filled 3 large black dustbin bags with the round "cakes" (as he called them) that contained the queen larvae, amongst others, and he said his father-in-law (being a fisherman) would have a field day using those as bait next time he went fishing. He left some residual powder in place too to prevent any wasps returning. Don't leave a wasps nest in situ believing it will simply die out. It won't.

Last time I called pest control about a wasp nest I was told not to worry as they would die off soon. They did not. On New Year's Day, I opened the loft hatch and six queens crawled out within minutes.
The wasps here have been incredibly mellow, which is a good thing as the wasp nest powder and foam took weeks and weeks of applying it to work.
Good news for you is that wasps don't return to the same nest. I'd be checking elsewhere for other areas they may have moved to though.

After a wasp nest in my firewood storage which I left because of its value (and a potential fine over here for killing them) and they did not hurt anyone. I did inform the neighbours. (You could relocate any wasp or hornet nest basically for free though).
A few years later I had a hornets nest in the back of my garage. They were also peaceful and non disturbing. But they produce a lot of ... lets say .. poop. The whole wall beneath the nest is dark brown, no smell because it is dry 🤣 After calling the Hymenoptera-service I was convinced to leave them also.
A friend had them in their roof like you did, and they realized the existence of the wasps nest by a large dark stain on the ceiling and a bad smell in the room. You were lucky your roof was ventilated so well. As you said, the problem solved itself when cold weather starts ( and the wasp-sewage dries)
    Cheers

Well done for sorting it out. I have the same problem at the moment, they are in the roof getting in under the chimney flashing. I have a 5m telescopic pole and cable tied an empty coffee cup on the end. I then filled it with wasp powder and after a few attempts from the ground (pole is quite wobbly when fully extended), I managed to hit the spot. I then had a similar problem to you and your attic - I went inside and there were wasps all over our upstairs bedroom. There was a small gap between the skirting board and the wooden floors and they were coming out of it, the powder drives them crazy and they swarm everywhere. I managed to seal up the gap with two tubes of decorators caulk. I hoovered up those in the bedroom - a bit of wasp powder in the hoover works wonders. They are still around and I can hear them munching at night so I hope they aren't chewing through the eaves, but I'm going to leave it now and hope we get some early frosts.

Had this issue once and was convinced we had mice in the loft with all the scratching sounds. Worth noting that normally pros use a pole and spray insecticide powder around the entry point which is then carried inside to the queen. Activity ceases within half to one hour.

Top tips... Get spray bottle and fill with cold water, add fairy liquid and spray away, they go from actively attacking to flying away as what it does breaks down the wings and kills them. Next tip.... Add ant powder to the nest entrance or hole, cake it to be fair. Tried and tested, works a treat.

That method can also be used to down those annoying fly's in the house, brings them down instantly although I only use this as a last resort as for some reason washing up liquid is banned for use as a pesticide in some countries so I don't really want to breath in the spray.

Many years back... I was a young boy (say 11 or so?). There was a wasp nest at the attic/under the roof. I thought it'd be the job for me (as they were annoying) - got a wooden stick, some rags and poured gasoline alike mixture. No clothes and preparations, then climbed the ladder and burned the nest... Looking back it feels absolutely insane... it did work and didn't burn the house down either.

Good job! Last year I had a nest in the loft right in the pitch of the roof - about the size of a grapefruit. I just used Raid - a few sprays right on the nest, and then out for oxygen, and to keep my distance as they were angry. The raid made the nest go soggy, and soon they were just falling out the hole in the bottom. Eventually got them all, maybe 50 - 100, and cut the nest away. No idea where were coming in. Haven't seen them since, but I always check before I go in now!!

Many may moons ago I discovered a wasp nest in our loft, and I called a local pest control guy. He sent out some poor lad who was obviously trying to earn a few quid over the summer. He had gloves and a bee keeper's hood, and that was it. He went into the loft and stabbed the nest with a hollow steel tube attached to a rubber bladder full of some hideous white powder. It did the job and he didn't get stung, so win all round. My ex father in law, who never liked me, told me I should have dealt with it myself. I mentioned this to my then wife, and she said that was interesting, because when she was a kid, her dad had found a nest in their loft and he decided to go investigate and got stung right between his eyes for his troubles. He called an exterminator and he told him, the nest entrance is obviously to the outside, but they have sentinel that guards the back of the nest, just in case. If she feels she can deal with the threat she will sting, however if she feels overwhelmed she taps on the nest and the nest will swarm out and you're probably going to get stung to death...

  • @frankief7111
    @frankief7111 4 місяці тому

I use Henry too. The trick is for you to stay in the dark: I put a powerful torch near the end of the vacuum tube and they buzz around the light and get sucked up. Meanwhile I'm well back and in the dark (don't put the loft light on) and never really get close to the action. The bee suit just needs to be baggy... if the material is tight on your arm say, a sting will go through, nothing stops you putting on more layers but it is hot work. Finally I would call someone and not do it myself but every time I've phoned they were all fully booked for ages so DIY it is.

Had a wasp nest under the roof tiles too, could see them crawling under tiny gaps between the roof tiles. The wasps made their nest from under the roof tiles up into the wall of the dormer, where you could really hear them buzzing around. Had to call in a mate, who is a beekeeper and knows his stuff.
As we could not find the entrance of the nest we decided to drill a small hole in the wall where the buzzing was the loudest, inserted the poison there and after half an hour or so they were all dead. Nasty little buggers!

I charge £80, treat it from the ground so no damage to the building. No overspray of the dust into the neighbours garden, no use of 'indoor only ' aerosol, no health risk due to confined space... etc. Wasps never reuse an old nest. Best leave it to a professional.

Would the loft space be classified as a warm roof in terms of no cross ventilation?

    • @GosforthHandyman

We treat it as a cold space as we added extra cross ventilation and there's a LOT of insulation under the loft boards. 👍

I had wasps twice (different places) within a few years. £80 each time to local pest guy, job done. He did it from the ground with an extending powder puffer. Gone in a few minutes & won't come back cos he used a powder containing Chrysanthemum. Understand why you wanted to do this yourself but after buying all the gear it would have probably been cheaper to get someone in & then deal with the roof yourself. Good vid though Andy.

Wasps are nasty things. I found a tiny nest under a garage shelf. Watched it and there was just 1 wasp flying in and out. So i knocked the nest off with a brush, that 1 wasp chased me out the garage down the garden and back to the house!!

I had a wasps nest in my loft and asked a beekeeper friend re this. He said just to leave it until they vacate it at the end of the year.
I did so, and when I looked they had left. All I had to do then was remove the nest.
Nothing more to do than that

Had a wasp nest behind an air brick and as the wife is allergic to wasp stings it had to go, got some powder and blew it into the airbrick as could not get to the nest as it was under the floorboards. Next thing was to put a board up against the air brick to block it off, two days later they are coming in and out through the next air brick, so did the self same thing with that one, that did the trick finally after about 4 days bingo no more wasps.

I would leave them alone, in September, unless you need to get into the roof regularly. By then the colony will have stopped growing, meaning the worker wasps have to seek their sugar fix from fruit, which makes them angrier. Wasp nests in late spring I would remove because the colony is growing and you will have them all summer. They will die off by the end of November. Honey bees I would remove, because unlike wasps they continue the colony year on year and the honey. Well that’s a real bugger to remove and the staining takes a while to clear up. Well worth paying a professional to properly remove and rehouse bees.

I’d urge you to get that spray foam off your roof immediately! It's like a ticking time bomb - it will trap moisture, rot your roof from the inside out, and eventually lead to a catastrophic collapse. The cost of removing it now is nothing compared to the nightmare waiting down the line.

I had a wasp nest above a ceiling in my bedroom. Lots of chewing noises… then I came home and found a bedroom full of wasps. Then I had a wasp nest in my compost heap on my allotment. thought I’d killed them, I hadn’t… and I found out the hard way! Luckily no one saw me driving home in my bra and knickers or noticed the pile of my clothes on the allotment… with wasps still trying to sting them 3 hrs later. I now call the pest controller out 😊
