Man your awesome. You did that whole truck build by yourself. I give you a lot of credit man. I build cars too and I know how hard it can get when you do t have a friend for some extra hands.
I'm not saying gm failed with the s10. I come from the s10 years. They sold what seems like a trillion of them. Where they failed in the 90s is that they didn't compete with the Dakota with the v8 engines. If s10s would have had an ss model with the year appropriate Lt/Ls engines they would have been a major success.
Also the grand Cherokee and the explorer were the blazers competitors and both the jeep and the explorer were available with a v8. It's really disappointing that gm didn't do the same.
I tell you what the little six cylinders and four cylinders weren't bad for what these trucks were really intended I owned a 4-cylinder as my personal vehicle back in the 90s when I was riding High School my 1995 Chevy S10 was my first brand new vehicle I ever bought but I had a service vehicle later on that was an S10 has an alarm technician with the 6 cylinder in it and that thing it would go pretty good it wasn't a race car or nothing it was just a work truck but it was a good little work truck
excellent build.. I love budget builds :) I have a few of my own. And eventually I think I will do a s10 swap.. My first truck was a s10.. so have a lot of good memories
Ready to see part 2! I'm in the middle of an LS swap in my 98 single cab S10 myself. Pretty much going the same route as you. New cam, and valve springs, and a few more small things but I'll be adding a 125 shot to mine!
I just found your channel I'm building a S10 and my menu throwed your channel up and I checked you out love the S10 I live in Greenbrier TN north of Nashville TN
Absolutely superb video. Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but, if you have the welder out, and are welding anyway, weld a 9/16 (or whatever size) nut onto your booger. Easier than a channel lock.
ebay has adapters from any injector to any injector i use them all the time never have to cut wires have been running for years. they plug on injector and your harness plugs into them
Yup I love them and use them a lot. When I did this swap I didn't have a set of adapters but I did have all 8 plugs off of another harness so expediency for the win.
I have a 1988 Red S10 my dad bought brand spanking new in 88. Was pampered its whole life. I had it repainted a few years ago and it looks like a brand new truck. No rust, no dents, no anything. I had the iron duke 2.5 rebuilt but im wanting a v8 now. The only problem is the truck is so nice and original that I dont wanna chop it all up for a v8. Im told the original 5 speed stick cant handle a v8, nor can the original rear end. Is that true??? I just want a stock v8....no race engines or anything.
I think the hole in the pan was done to comply with whatever state you live in EPA regs. Most salvage yards can't have any fluids in the cars, so they drain the oil, radiator...and since there's no drain plug on a transmission, hammer a hole in it... in Illinois, salvage yards can sell used tires, used rims, but can't sell mounted tires...🤔
Had to stop at about 28:50 oh my... Pro tip...weld a nut to the broken bolt, the Hemi trucks are notorious for the manifold bolts to snap, heat fluctuation. Driver rear pass. front on the ls, they all do it.
Excellent build,, can you detail more about how the gages work with your new set up,, I have a 98 that I'm wanting to do this same thing too,, also the 4l80 seemed to fit pretty good????? Thanks,,,,,,,,SUBSCRIBED!!!
Hey bud, enjoy your videos. I have a 98 ext cab 2.2 5 speed I am hoping to exchange for an ls this summer. Gonna try to go as low buck as possible. One question; you re-used all the stock lifters except the one you had to replace? I don't have much experience with roller cams but I know on flat tappet cams you usually replace the lifters with the cam. Also wanted to give you a helpful hint; next time you have a broken stud instead of welding a "booger" on it and struggling with channel locks get yourself a nut that has about the same size hole as the stud diameter, place it on the end of the stud and fill the hole with weld. Then you can remove it with a socket or a wrench. Much less effort and frustration. Thanks for the videos, and any insight you can provide.
Hey Austin. Thanks for watching. I did just replace the one bad lifter. The nice thing about roller cams is you don't have to keep track of lifters vs cam lobes. so when one goes bad, you don't have to replace all of them. If it were a customer engine id replace all of them but you dont have to.
Thanks for getting back to me, and thanks for the info. My powertrain is a 4.8 LR4 and a 4L60E from a 2000 silverado. I plan on replacing the cam with the same "sloppy" Elgin cam that you used. Was wondering if I should replace the lifters but now I think if they look ok my money would be better spent on replacing the valve springs like you did. Also have an 8.5 rear with 3.42 gears and an Eaton locker out of another s10. Think it might be a better choice than the stock 4.10 open diff that came in the truck. Wouldn't mind having your opinion on that, along with any other insight you may have.
I have never had a broken bolt come out that easily. Still have one in my transmission pan that I tried to drill and use an extractor on . . . the extractor broke off in the hole.
I still don't see the need to cut out the crossmember. mine fits just fine. second thing should have pressed on the 4 cyl p/s pump pulley on. or do what I did, and clearenced the head of the bolt.
Also what radiator and fans did you use and did you have to fabricate the frame any? I see a lot of ppl saying different things and yours looked like it sat in there pretty easy.
You can even throw in an LSX that gets you upwards of 454ci. Just a bunch more money. LS blocks are dimensionally similar externally. I’ve got an ‘03 extended cab that I have some big plans for, including an LS3(6.2L) and a built 4L60E trans. Would love to get the 6L80 in, but too large for the S10 transmission tunnel and they seem to suffer from the reliability lottery. Some handle good power without failure, but some can’t even handle stock power levels without failing.
@Muletown Speed and Dyno was the radiator big enough to keep the engine cool? also what fans did you use and did you have to trim the rad support to make it fit?
The v6 rad cooled it just fine. The fan was a leftover spal fan from a work project that interfaced with the harness and was controlled by the pcm. Didn't do any trimming on the core support since it was a factory radiator, but when I build another s10 ill trim enough to set the radiator further forward to get a little extra clearance between the fan and engine.
575 lift? How about duration? It could give you issues with stock valves. Just a thought. Are those springs rated for that kind of lift? I love this video, Alot of guys don't have alot of money. This is perfect. Thanks for sharing
Guys and gals DO NOT use the 4L80E in your swap, especially if you are not boosting it or running nitrous. It will be a total dog unless you plan on running a stall converter and a 4.10+ rear gear, especially not behind a 4.8L with a cam and springs.
Question about the stock shift cable on the 4l80. I’ve got the same setup and I’m finding the gears don’t line up correctly. Did you have to do anything differently?
MuletownSpeed thanks man! I’ve had my truck for a little over 2 years now and i just love these little trucks so much i have 2 regular cab Xtreme trucks ive always wanted to ls swap one and now Im finally doing it. Im currently hunting for a 4l80e and im doing all the wiring myself
The drive shaft and diff I want to see what u did a lot of people don't talk about it I don't know I'm pretty sure the stock diff wont hold up to the v8 if not gentle
Hey man you have a Facebook I could get ahold of you on I also live here in the good ol mule town and wanting to do this exact same swap pretty damn cool episode though all in all the 🐖 is awesome
Man your awesome. You did that whole truck build by yourself. I give you a lot of credit man. I build cars too and I know how hard it can get when you do t have a friend for some extra hands.
Self clearance itself?🤣 I’m going to be using that phrase for sure
Trick is to weld a nut to the broken bolt and i didn't cut my crossmember for my 5.3 swap. Can't wait to get mine up and running....love the video
Some people don't know but the Colorado was available with a 5.3 from the factory. I think 2010 and 11.
So true man but I guess they didn’t want to, it’s unbelievable though, in the high trim s10s v8 should be there (xtreme/zr2/zq8)
So did everyone forget about the cyclone from the early 90s..... Though a v6 it was still a beast with the 4.3 but a beast!!
Great Video!!......I also have an S-10 extended cab that Needs This Upgrade!!
OldsGuy here, badass shirt, only way to roll
I tell you what the 90s S10 were still really nice looking even to today the lines of that truck still match up with more modern vehicles
excellent build.. I love budget builds :) I have a few of my own. And eventually I think I will do a s10 swap.. My first truck was a s10.. so have a lot of good memories

Same here. 5.3 in a ‘93. 👊👊
I just found your channel I'm building a S10 and my menu throwed your channel up and I checked you out love the S10 I live in Greenbrier TN north of Nashville TN
Dude you are creative as hell!! @Muletown Speed and Dyno crazy!!
Absolutely superb video. Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but, if you have the welder out, and are welding anyway, weld a 9/16 (or whatever size) nut onto your booger. Easier than a channel lock.
Gotcha. When I run into that, I keep bumping the power up on my welder to get better penetration. Again, great video. This is what UA-cam is for.
awesome build. not as awesome as having a GARAGE PIG!!!
I am stealing the way you lifted the bed with the tie downs and cherry picker lol.
thumbs up especially for tilting the water neck genius
About 5 minutes in I immediately sensed Sloppy. Lol Love it man this is great.
How tall is the ceiling above your lift? Looking to install a similar setup
ebay has adapters from any injector to any injector i use them all the time never have to cut wires have been running for years. they plug on injector and your harness plugs into them
Yup I love them and use them a lot. When I did this swap I didn't have a set of adapters but I did have all 8 plugs off of another harness so expediency for the win.
clicked sub for the electro swing hahah nice build man woo ls stuff
Tip, weld a nut on once it's built up enough with weld
I have a 1988 Red S10 my dad bought brand spanking new in 88. Was pampered its whole life. I had it repainted a few years ago and it looks like a brand new truck. No rust, no dents, no anything. What kinda fans and radiator did you use? And what the fuel pump that you used
They make better hammers than adjustable wrenches. You must be from the same school as my boss. The right tool for the job is the closest. LoL
I think the hole in the pan was done to comply with whatever state you live in EPA regs. What did you use for trans cooler lines? Have a set made from a trans shop?
Had to stop at about 28:50 oh my...
Pro tip...weld a nut to the broken bolt, the Hemi trucks are notorious for the manifold bolts to snap, heat fluctuation. Driver rear pass. front on the ls, they all do it.
Great vid bro keep wrenchn
Man I live in Chattanooga and would love to have a similar project. I’ve had a couple s10s but have always wanted a regular cab v8
Excellent build,, can you detail more about how the gages work with your new set up,, I have a 98 that I'm wanting to do this same thing too,, also the 4l80 seemed to fit pretty good????? Thanks,,,,,,,,SUBSCRIBED!!!
that a frame rubber might get hot enough to lose integrity fast, maby exhaust wrap at that point in the header
Great video S10 is going to be sweet!
I need the part # for transmission lines.
Thank you
11 months and no second video. Any plans on wrapping this series up?
Hey bud, enjoy your videos. I have a 98 ext cab 2.2 5 speed I am hoping to exchange for an ls this summer. Gonna try to go as low buck as possible. This was a great video to watch. You did a great job on your build. What belt did you go with on the ac bracket setup?
I have a pair of pliers just like that. Water pump pliers are for fixing the sink. If you got anywhere near my car with them things I would be upset.
Grinder and paint makes you the welder you ain't.
Wow it seems there`s more wiggle room with a v-8 compared to a 4.3 vortec v/6.
I have some family down there in Columbia. Spent several summers at my aunts Mammie and Jennie Atkinsons "farm"
I have never had a broken bolt come out that easily. Still have one in my transmission pan that I tried to drill and use an extractor on . . . the extractor broke off in the hole.
That’s music in the annoying!
Muletown Speed I don’t make money form writing proper fucking sentences.
I still don't see the need to cut out the crossmember. mine fits just fine.
second thing should have pressed on the 4 cyl p/s pump pulley on. or do what I did, and clearenced the head of the bolt.
Next time weld a NUT to the stud and use some candle wax/grease/penetrating oil on it. Work it back and forth. Will go much smoother.
10-4. I've since switched to the nut method. Works great. Thanks.
Sweet video. Next time weld a nut onto the broken exhaust stud
What data logging program where you using in this video????
HP Tuners
Also what radiator and fans did you use and did you have to fabricate the frame any? I see a lot of ppl saying different things and yours looked like it sat in there pretty easy.
Preciate the info man! I’m throwing a 6.0 in my 2003.
You did an awesome job
I welded a booger to the broken stud then welded a nut onto the booger and it came right out.
Thanks yeah that's what ive done several times since making that video and it works great.
did you upgrade your fuel regulator/filter or kept the original one?
You didnt clean or paint the engine but good job you got it crank up and it sounds good
Thanks for showing us It's coming out badass quick question will a 5.3 fit in there?
You can even throw in an LSX that gets you upwards of 454ci. Just a bunch more money. LS blocks are dimensionally similar externally. A 4.8L and 5.3L are the exact same block just different strokes.
Any updates on this build. I have the same color s10 single cab 4 cylinder but a 5 speed.... Keep up the good work!!!!!
Thanks just watched it!!!!! Are you on Facebook!?
Boom lookatdat.....DONE! next project 😂🤣😆
Did you use the same drive shaft or did you have one cut?
I’m new to the channel are there any videos on the Cutlass in the background at 2:31?
@Muletown Speed and Dyno was the radiator big enough to keep the engine cool? also what fans did you use and did you have to trim the rad support to make it fit?

575 lift? How about duration? It could give you issues with stock valves. Just a thought. Are those springs rated for that kind of lift? I love this video, Alot of guys don't have alot of money. This is perfect. Thanks for sharing
Nice. Fun truck, I'm sure.
Hey buddy nice build, what size and length oil cooler lines did you use boss?
I’m looking into buying a s10, was the motor swap hard? Any tips?
Welp, that Oldsmobile shirt just grabbed you a subscriber
BTW, this is gotta be Sloppy enough for Matt Happel @ Sloppy Mechanics! Great JOb
Guys and gals DO NOT use the 4L80E in your swap, especially if you are not boosting it or running nitrous. It will be a total dog unless you plan on running a stall converter and a 4.10+ rear gear, especially not behind a 4.8L with a cam and springs.
Hey, another muletown hotrodder!
Plan on doing a very similar build
Good luck on your build. Let me know how it goes.
Question about the stock shift cable on the 4l80. I’ve got the same setup and I’m finding the gears don’t line up correctly. Did you have to do anything differently?
You should be able to pop open the white lock on the cable at the bottom, and adjust length as needed to make it correct.
awsome
job
should have added a nut and weld the nut to the stud to make it easier
How hard is it to do an LS swap on a 4 by 4 can it be done please comment back
question you went from 4 cly to 8 what rearend did you change to??
What's that program on your laptop youre using?
I’m from southern middle Tennessee too
Did currant performance flash your pcm for you?
i want part 2! 😭 great job though. how much was the harness itself
I got mine for about $700
Nice work
What did you use for engine mounts??
how much was that custom harness and what company did it???????
What drive shaft and rear was used??
moneyshot41 ii
if it was abandoned, what did you do for a title?
Only one thing you can do, get a bonded title.
I was lucky and knew the guy that left it on the property. He had the title and signed it over.
What about the diff? Stock?
4.8 why not the 6.0 it fits at the last car show in Arizona i went to the guy had a 6.0 in a s10 and truck looked stock
Its called money. You know that green stuff that you buy stuff with?
How much do you charge to convert my truck?
Do you have anymore updates on this build!?! I have a same color s10. Would love to do this swap one day!!!!!
What engine mounts did you use?🧐
love the video, but definitely not the first fire up. You don't have to lie to be cool ;P Great job man.
I wonder how many manhours have been spent pulling broken head bolts.
Sorry who's the wiring from please
I didn't think the LS head bolts were reusable.
no idea what you are saying audio volume is to soft.
Adapter fittings for the transmission, need part #
Wheres part 2?
Do you have a part number for the fuel pump? im currently swapping a 5.3 into a 2003 s10 Xtreme.
It already has an ls a 4.3L V6 vortec LS motor 😂
Did have have to keep the emissions?
The drive shaft and diff I want to see what u did a lot of people don't talk about it I don't know I'm pretty sure the stock diff wont hold up to the v8 if not gentle
Could change it out for a 8.5
Did I see a piece of pvc pipe used for the exhaust..?!?! Haha. I don’t think that’s going to last very long haha
MuletownSpeed yes I know, I realized that later, it was the lighting.. It made the silver pipe look white..
You could have just welded a drain plug in that spot to make changing your transmission fluid easier?
why did you notch it,what was the purpose
Hey man you have a Facebook I could get ahold of you on I also live here in the good ol mule town and wanting to do this exact same swap pretty damn cool episode though all in all the 🐖 is awesome
Would you have rather used a 4l60e?
Yes that is what he should have used or even a 4L65E. The 4L80E was a bad choice behind the "cammed" 4.8L.
How much did this build cost you ?
If you use different oil pan u don't have to notch the frame correct?
MuletownSpeed thanks man . I'm going to do one on my s10. Just not good with plasma cutter or welding lol
