- Join us in Cardiff Canton Depot when SR 34052 Lord Dowding arrives and departs on Saturday, May 4th 2019. Departing the mainline she climbs into the shed before leaving her coaches before the run round to Newport. Prior to the move, the support coach is detached before she takes on coal and water. The run to Maindee takes an hour. Later she backs onto the stock and departs to pick up her passengers at Central. Thanks to Alun and the team at Canton for their assistance in this video
Brilliant production and a wonderful insight into the background of the workings and preparation of a beautifully fully functioning preserved and restored steam locomotive. It's great that you had access to see and record the event and I really appreciate the effort of the people behind the scenes who keep up their work and also, least not forgetting a great job of the coaching stock. I really enjoyed this one.
I have a good core of friends who allow me access ( and information ) for the special mainline tours. Thanks for your support with my hobby
that loco is back to normal again as 34046 braunton
thanks for watching. Mike in Wales

Having friends in the right places does help.................It was a very good day
Hi Mike not seen your productions before, but great to see "inside"a steam excursion as it were, while the passengers are away enjoying themselves.Do you work at Cardiff Canton? Hope thers more material of this quality, most enjoyable, just subscribed-cheers.
I'm 75 years of age and retired 20 years ago having been a senior executive in a European Fashion Business. How's that for a complete change? I have many friends in railway circles
Excellent Video - Thanks for sharing it. I'm in the US... and of course the Big focus right now for all of us Steam/rail fans is the UP 4014 leading a double header with the UP 844, now on their way to Ogden, Utah for the 150th Anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory Summit, Utah on May 10th, 1869 - which was the meeting of the Central Pacific RR and the UPRR and the completion of the first US transcontinental railroad.
Anyway... I have a question for you over there in the UK.... how do you manage to run such "clean stacks" on your coal fired locomotives? Also, in regards to this particular locomotive, the "Lord Dowding"... what is the tractive effort and rated horsepower?
Take a look at this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SR_West_Country_class_21C146_Braunton
So there is no way of turning a loco these days i take it ? nice vid btw
Many depots haven't kept their turntables in working order. No need to turn new locos. Also, I believe, that steam is not allowed to rum at high sped tender first on the mainline
Fantastic video mike I must been miles way into looking at this locomotive and it's coaches when you were on on platform 6 anyway Saphos Trains have an Facebook page and we were asked to share photos & videos of the day the 4-6-2 34046 Braunton now running to it's sister Loco 34052 Lord Dowding from Crewe to Cardiff Central and return on Saturday 4th May 2019. So in the search box just type in Saphos Trains and it's up to you if you want to post your video further more ILL leave you this website for you see what on next for Saphos Trains Excursions in 2019 www.saphostrains.com James Joseph JJ Dyer
