Riis was in the Danish TV2 studio today, and he was O'Connor's DS last year. He says he is incredibly strong, but very inexperienced, because he started cycling late in life, so anything that requires great bike handling is an issue for him (and costs more for him physically). He can especially get attacked on descents and on technical finishes. Riis predicted he will stay in contention for the podium till the end.
This is the most exciting Grand Tour ever!!!!....by a long way, Bring on the young guns. If this was any other time in cycling history Pogacar would have to earn his right for years to go for GC. Its great that the young guys are kicking the established way of doing things into touch. Yellow jersey in the breakaway, lets go!!!
The most inspiring, compelling sports viewing of my life was the TDF 1999 through 2005. Young Mr.Pogačar has brought back that excitement and anticipation of every stage. I thought that wouldn't happen again in my lifetime. By the way guys, when I was Mr. Armstrong's age I did 50 pull ups during the TCA (Toughest Competitor Alive) competition at the World Police and Fire Games in Barcelona. I'm 75 now and the old joints won't allow that stuff anymore, so allow an old guy to brag a bit to you youngsters.
Always enjoy your guys analysis. Heres a question for you to mull around, do you guys have a favourite bike that you rode during any of the TDF campaigns?
having watched the pull up/chin up competition on Thursday with out a DOUBT Lance was the only one to do legit pull ups for all of them and this is coming from someone who loves to see George beat Lance!
I said this last stage but it’s worth repeating as Pogacar showed exactly this again, yesterday he was Pantani and today he pulled an Armstrong : Pogacar is a mix of prime Pantani and Armstrong. Makes it look effortless, unstoppable in climbs and TT like Armstrong. But uses what seems to be more ride on ‘feeling’ , attacks from 35 KM like Pantani. Armstrong was much more precise , almost surgical in his attacks, but had more consistency and ruthlessness that Pantani didn’t have. Pogacar takes the best of both worlds. Unbeatable ruthlessness in climbs and TT while riding on passion. Ultimate hybrid.
@@PaulAngeloff that’s a very valid question, especially considering the doping history of the two I mentioned. But either way, the dedication and commitment on his part to dominate isn’t achieved by drugs alone. But that’s a different topic. I am as impressed with his performance and I haven’t said that since LA
I admire all of them David. I ride. I’m almost 60. I know what it is to suffer but not like them. Drugs or no. Hats off to the most extraordinary athletes on the planet and the most underrated by non cyclists.
@Jay Taylor Contador never had the TT ability that Pogacar has exhibited. When I brought up Lance and Pantani was not that he uses their style but rather showing that he can be surgical and precise when he needs to be and he can ride on feeling when he needs to. Pantani stage 15 of the 1998 tour was the last time someone did something similar to Pogacar on stage 8. 35 KM, there is no science there, that’s just knowing you feel good and you’re going to dominate. Contador was never known for those type of moves , he was known to attack attack attack on final climbs and he was either going to win it all or nothing. Lance was surgical in his attacks. Doing just enough to dominate , make sure everyone knew he was not to be messed with and then defending. Pogacar has shown that same ability when needed. That’s why I said he is like a hybrid. Not that he uses their style
The guys missed it. UAE were letting O’Connor and AG2R take yellow. He was in virtual yellow and the gap was increasing with UAE riding on front. It was in fact INeos who didn’t want the jersey to leave Pogacar’s shoulders. They are the ones who took control and closed down 2 minutes, shelling Pogacar’s teammates. At that point, Pogacar went on the attack, when it was clear O’Connor wouldn’t take over the jersey. Edit- just listened to JB2. Johan agrees with me that UAE was trying to give the jersey away but Ineos put an end to it.
Just remember two short years ago when Bernal won his first Tour at 22. Everyone thought, "Oh man...how many is he going to win?" You never know what may happen or who else may emerge. Today it seems like Pog could win ten in a row. But you know...he probably won't.
