Fry and Leela's Future Son | Futurama

- Fry and Leela have always been the emotional center of Futurama, in fact, the series finale, Meanwhile, was completely focused on the two of them tying the knot, finally solidifying their relationship. But though the series finale is the ultimate testament to their love, it all takes place within a frozen universe, and we don’t get to see Fry and Leela actually live out a real life together, just this beautiful fantasy of a frozen world. This also means we didn’t get to see whether or not children were in the Fry slash Leela family’s future. But what if I told you that we almost DID get to see this in the show? In a DVD commentary, writers David X Cohen and Josh Weinstein revealed an unused episode concept that would have featured Fry and Leela’s future SON. But how did this play out, and why did they ultimately abandon the storyline? Well I’ll tell you exactly why, and throw in a bit of my own hopes and speculation along the way.

His father would be his great-grandfather and his mother is some what outside the human race. Wild genetics.
And Hubert Farnsworth would be his distant cousin.
He did do the nasty in the pasty
Leela was introduced as an alien in the 1st episode. Abandoned at birth, she later found out that her parents were mutants on Earth. Therefore human.
@@Mecharnie_Dobbs Yes, a mutation alting her human DNA and RNA there why I said 'some what" outside the human race
@@Mecharnie_Dobbs virgin mutant vs chad alien
Maybe it's me but I've often imagined that if Fry and Leela had a family, they would have a daughter.
Same. I think having a daughter who has a similar personality to Fry would be more fun and interesting than them having a son. I even did my own fan-design a while ago for what a Fry/Leela daughter would look like.
I think the son design looks more like a daughter anyway lol maybe you're right
Maybe they had more than one kid
@@troubledwaters7441 could be trans or genderfluid so all fans are happy
@@HisameArtwork How does that make all fans happy? Being genderfluid is its own thing. Nothing wrong with it but no it doesn't make all fans happy just because a character would be trans or gender fluid. All that matters is if its a good character or not. At least to me.
His genetics would possibly have high importance too. Fry missing a Delta brainwave. Leela being a mutant human. Maybe he would have a newly evolved Delta brainwave.
That would be a neat little concept of Fry and Leela having a family. And just think of what kind of uncle Bender would have been.
Uncle Bender... I think Fry and Leela would have to take a whole bunch of morality classes to offset the negative influences from our fragile chain smoking robit.
No matter what Bender would do, he would never cross lines that Roger in American Dad has
Okay but the thought of Bender acting all grizzled and uncaring like he’s being ignored by Lela and Fry, only to soften up (as we have actually seen on a few occasions in show) and make it his goal to be ‘cool uncle bender’ is actually amazing and I would pay to see it
Ah, hell! Knowing Bender, their first word would being something on the order of “fuck”, and their first phrase "Bite my shiny metal ass" or "bite my smelly-diapered ass!" Love Bender, (even if I shouldn't), but he's such a total asshole. A funny one, though.
I still remember when he took all those kids from the orphanarium for some sort of tax break/welfare/something.
@@vexusvexed Yep, me too!
Fry and Leela's son seems kind of similar to Trunks.
Dragon ball right?
He should had purple hair
Princess trunks you mean
For realsies?
He looks a bit feminine because of the chest area
Or to build on the emotional thing, Fry’s son is just one of Fry and Leela’s kids, and the reason he time traveled back was to save his other siblings at the expense of himself.
I'm crying and I just read a YT comment
Oooof, my feels.
Honestly I think the leela being "the other" is pretty well covered in the show.
For one: she's important in helping fry to stop the first brain attack.
And, more importantly, she's pretty much the only competent character on the show. Without her, fry would likely be dead a dozen times over.
I don’t know if keeping Fry alive would be enough for her to get a mysterious title like “the other.” Bender’s saved Fry multiple times as well and the Professor even brought him back to life once.
Plus, it seems like the whole “the other” comment was linked to Nibbler saying he’ll need Fry’s help again later at the end of the episode. At least to me, anyway.
I've recently found and been reading the Futurama comics, and one issue I recently read, they actually ended up meeting their son, who looks much like the depiction you had here in the video, though the rest of the concept was completely different. It was still fun to read, as most of the comics have been
I believe that was comic #32 "Doctor What" where Dr. Zoidberg, Fry, Leela, and Bender travel through time in a port-a-potty. The last third is about how they wind up a few decades into the future (of the future) where the Professor missed Fry and Leela so much he combined their DNA into a clone that was raised by a copy of Bender. Their "son", Sir Leelan von Fry-bot, eventually took over the world and imprisoned all humanity until Zoidberg saves the day.
@@EyesWillRule Yup, that's the one!
@@laurenm778 not what I thought of when you mentioned Fry and Leela's son in the comics.
Not sure if they've ever done the "stopping your own birth to set the timeline right", but some of the best episodes of Star Trek have done the "somebody's got to die to fix the past" (City on the Edge of Forever, Yesterday's Enterprise)
They kind of did that in the Season 9 episode “Decision 3012” but that was by accident.
It'd be cool if they did a follow up series something like Futurama the next generation where Hubert and Dwight are grown up and running planet express and fry and leela's kid is the child of the series where we get to see the future of the Futurama cast and also introducing new characters.
yeah after farnsworth has died.

"She must be the (m)other!" ~Nibbler
What's funny is they think fans wouldn't have liked a serious Futurama episode, but the best parts of the show that almost everyone likes were the serious, heartbreaking/warming moments.
I can imagine it now
About halfway into the movie the professor creates a machine that can translate Fry and Leela's son's speech so they can understand him.
The end of the movie comes along. He tells them that he came back in time to help Fry finally defeat the Brainspawn and save the universe but in doing so he knew that he would cease to exist.
He then figures out how to say "Mom, Dad. I love you." by speaking backwards for him so he can tell them himself and not have the thing the professor created tell them for him. They hug and both tell him they love him too as he slowly disappears in their arms.
Aaah. That would hurt so much. I really want to see it now!
"Why didn't they move forward with this backward moving idea?", is a great line.
Futurama flourishes best when it's not trying to be funny. Unfortunate they didn't feel the same.
The original run could have done it. The comedy central run was significantly less grounded.
Can't wait for Cartoons that curse #3
If this were brought to a 90+ minute theatrical release, I might actually camp out for a release for once!
Man, I would've thought that art for Fry and Leela's son was official if Johnny 2 Cellos hadn't said otherwise! That's impressive.
the art really is great, but the way the fry/leela son is stiffly superimposed onto various scenes made me chuckle, especially 6:10
I’m honoured you made a video based on my comment about Nibbler’s reference to ‘the other’ on another one of your videos! I didn’t know there was an unused plot about their son - that’s awesome! I want that film now!
You stuck the landing with, "A man can dream"... lol
Really love your concept for how the episode could have gone.
I now get excited every time I see you posted a Futurama video!
Recently, Mystery Science Theater 3000 fans donated $2 million in just a few days to make more episodes. “FUTURAMA FANS, LETS FUND THIS MOVIE IDEA!!!” 👌
Instead of talking about it why don’t we set up a go fund me and blast it all over the place get the donations
I just watched all of futurama again. I'm sad it's over, but it finished perfectly and I don't want more, but I don't want it to be over....help!
Johhny your videos are amazing. Whenever I have had a tough day and they bring a smile to my face. You are honestly an amazing youtuber who deserves more attention.
i've never heard of this being a thing before and now i want it so bad-- your futurama videos always have such cool and interesting info that
i haven't heard elsewhere and i love that, i could listen to people talk about this show for ages 😍
love the son design here too, hats off is a talented dude!
In Futurama comic, Fry, Leela, Bender and Zoidberg, accidentally travel to a future that is despotically ruled by Fry and Leela's evil son. Who is also a cyborg with some of Bender's body parts.
This is happens mainly to create a clickbait cover though. Farnsworth had stored DNA from Fry and Leela so that he could clone replacements but he only had enough usable DNA for one clone.
I was gonna bring this up!
I finished Watching this show 2 weeks ago .......Damn.......What A Diamond
Wow I started choking up just thinking about a hypothetical convo between Fry, Leela and their son in that context you put forth towards the end.
(Fighting tears)
Shut up and take my money!!!!!!!
Your futurama videos are the only thing keeping me going LMAO but fr I love your stuff!!!! I bet this channel is gonna blow up soon
Not gonna lie, your idea of how the story could go definitely made me a little teary eyed. This would be such a cool idea :)
"Moved forward with this backwards idea" not even 3 minutes into this video and I subbed just for that great line of writing. Kudos dude you've earned my subscription.
I'm all for another Futurama movie! The infamous words of Philip J Fry sums up my feelings. "Shut up! And take my money!"
i always love when cartoon children are a perfect 50/50 split of their parents
"a character who's going back into the future, knowing it will eliminate himself" isn't that kind of what happened with the guy who ran against Nixon in 3012? I know he didn't know he would cease to exist, but it reminds me alot of that episode.
Nice video. I certainly would have loved to have seen a storyline in some form revolving around Fry and Leela’s offspring. Be it by time travel or alternative realities. I have to agree that I think the idea of “the other” being a connection to Fry and Leela’s future child is very plausible. I even did a five page comic revolving around the birth of Fry and Leela’s child.
Loving these Futurama videos of yours!
Can’t wait for you to do one talking about Randy.
Lot's of interesting stuff I wasn't aware of in this video, quality work!
Thanks for doing such great Futurama videos @Johnny 2 Cellos!
Futurama is one of my favourite cartoons of all time it's extremely well written and almost always brings me to tears because Fry is a lovable loser from the 20th century like myself and I actually feel those emotional episodes like they happened to myself. I love how Bender always provides the much needed comic relief when the emotional episodes get too much.
I'd love to see them explore this in a film providing they do it in a way that keeps the original series a perfect time loop
You guys started a podcast?! You’re the two best animation channels on UA-cam!!
A Fry and Leela son episode? A call back to the Futurama comics Maybe?
Ohhh i would love to see it
If Fry and Leela ever did have kids, they'd be the luckiest kids in the world!!!
Please please PLEASE give us more!!! .....Love Everything I've seen you do - Just Want MORE!!!! - Lol - be well people
7:24 I have another idea: Instead of being erased by the natural laws of the universe, their son is sent to that world because he is destined to sacrifice himself (or herself, it could be a girl) to stop the brain spawn once and for all.
Let's just say that Fray and Leela are already married and expecting a child (1 or 2 months of pregnancy), and Leela's mutagenic DNA combined with Fray's natural immunity to their sonic attacks (I think I'm saying this right) has created a child capable of fighting them and/or control them _somehow_ (I dunno how, I'm not a Futurama lore master). The only weapon they possess against them. However, doing so may require to either lock themselves with them back in that alternate universe or to sacrifice themselves to end the species.
This of course causes a moral dilemma for Fray and Leela and even consider sacrificing themselves to save their child from teir fate, but if they do that, their child will never be born at all, so they'll have to raise a child only to send them to the slaughterhouse. Regardless, their child assures them that they gave them the best life they could possibly ask for and they have no regrets, and is glad to see how much they cared about them even before they were born.
Fray and Leela let their child fulfill their destiny and decide to give their child the happiest life they can give them before the appointed time. Hell, due to the time travel thing, their child doesn't have to be a teenager who dies at the prime of their life. They can be a middle-aged or even someone who married and had children of their own, meaning that no one preassured them to go to the past at any time. They went when they felt truly ready to save the world.
I though I would like Fry to name his son after his late dog and the image you made makes Seymour fit even more...
hopefully we get to see a fry and leela son/daughter story line in the hulu series
One thing I learned with the decision of a character's gender depends whether uses of the character, plot wise its best to go with a daughter for plot development often where the show starts with a main male character, to proceed with a daughter for a twist in storytelling, you could do it with a son but it just the following in fathers footsteps trope all over again, unless that son personality/abilities takes him down a different path. Now for merchandise its usually best to go with a son for action/power/toy purposes. Same reason why action/comedy cartoons typically go for sons to market them as toys they sell easier than female characters. Whereas Futurama was a comedy with a mostly male demographic viewers I can see why the concept was a son Leroy(Leela/Fry). But its interesting that small pieces in a puzzle that is a franchise can influence the in-universe direction.
Futurama isn't a merchandise-heavy show like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The showrunners aren't going to make decisions based upon what is going to sell more or look cooler as an action figure.
The outro of these futurama videos give me lots of nostalgia
Keep up the good work bro
I really enjoy watching your videos
Love your Futurama content!
My name is Leelah lol 😝 I love futurama also this video makes a lot of sense
I've gotta say, your videos are some of my favorite. I don't think I've come across a video of yours that I didn't enjoy!
@0:46 I always thought that line was funny, since both Fry and Leela have kids, just not together. (Fry with his Grandma, Leela with Kiff)
7:47 bro this show has already made me cry like 12 times don’t add another
I can't handle it tbh
Can the son be on moderately good terms with his 1 eyed half amphibiosan sibling Leela has with Kif?
Of all of the time traveling episodes in sad that really wasn't brought up again even in passing.
But the possible plot feels like it was already done in that election episode which brought forth the paradox that by changing the past he wasn't born thus he couldn't go back in the past to change it in the first place.
Well, a good bunch of Kif's babies had one eye, but I like this idea.
I would love to see Lela and Kiff’s kids too!
“Hey kids, it me. Your Uncle Zapp.” *weary sigh combined with Leela groan*
4:50 yes, *this* would have been a perfect story to do one of the Futurama movies with!! I had the thought and then, mere seconds later, it was as if you were reading my mind journal out loud as I was writing it!! 😉♥️
I really want to see that as a movie now! Brilliant idea.
I think the "sad" ending you pitched is super similar to the episode Decision 3012, where in ceasing to exist, the changes in time were also erased, making the theoretical son's changes basically useless, and catch them in a time loop.
Seriously man, you just showed the 3 second video of seymour and i almost started crying... that episode was too much man
i have all the hope in the world that they will revisit this idea one day, my dream is that they will work it into a film.
SINCE THE IMPOSSIBLE STREAM SUGGESTED A POTENTIAL MOVIE WHAT UF THIS IS SON STORY IS WHAT THEY MAKE HOLY FUCK
Love your videos. Just wanted to drop into a point on this one: someone traveling to the past and eliminating themselves in the process. Futurama did it with the election episode and the flash tv show (and comic) did it with their daughter Nora. I don’t know if they would see it as unoriginal now, since it’s already been done, once by them even. 🤷🏻♀️
Still, I’m sure they’d nail the story and I’d love it. 😊
When I heard about the backwards going time travel part, I couldn’t help but be reminded about tenet there and my first thought was „their son would probably go back as a way to make sure that things turn out the way they were intended to turn out in the first place“ and my next thought was „he would probably fake his death so everything would stay as it is supposed to be but then it is revealed at the end that he is still alive and trying to live in the past“
Then I had an image of their son getting stuck in the time capsule freezer thing the exact same way fry did in the first place in a post credits scene.
"By altering the time stream, I will no longer exist. You can have a Son, and you could call him Ricky! But he wont be me" something i remember from a twighlight zone story that i paraphrased to make it relevant to the concept of this video. I think it would add to the gut punch here.
Oh wow someone else who knows about that episode of the twilight zone. Always remembered it.
wow I do love learning about unused concepts from futurama
Now you're just making me want this!!!!
1:52 That kinda sounds a lot like Tenet... and they were definitely right, it was the coolest sci-fi story ever lol.
that's what i was thinking
My problem with trying to build up a reveal until the end of the episode is any traits they have will make it obvious to the audience that it's their kid. Orange hair, purple hair, one eye... Automatically thinking "hey, that could be their kid".
Yeah I expect they’d be wearing something covering their face and head
going on from my comment from the video about Leela being the Other with Fry's son being the progenitor of the Nibblonian race I think it would be really cool if Professor Farnsworth's clone Cubert was revealed to be the progenitor of the Brainspawn race as Cubert was tired of being overshadowed by Farnsworth's talents.
Shame we never got to see them have a child since this concept alone seems ver interesting.
So basically it would be the kind of reverse time "traveling" that they did in Tenet.
Theres a Red Dwarf episode towards the beginning of the series that has them land on a planet that everyone moves backwards in. Itd interesting to see Futuramas take on the concept
Hello Johnny. I did put this comment under one other of your posts. I wanted to share it again in case you missed it .
Frist of all.....I really liked your videos especially the ones from Disenchantment ( I was so eager about the show that I had deciphered more than 10 alphabetes of Maru's messages .
I've got 2 theories about Disenchantment.
1. I suppose that anonymous groom by the end of season could be Pendergast (or maybe not)
2. If you analyze Og's family tree you'll realize that their offsprings take their looks or traits from the father. we are sure Derek is Zog's son. if we assume Yog's dughter (the mop girl) and that baby bear are who we think they are , then why Tiabeane herself is so unlike king Zog? I've suspected that maybe Zog is not really her father.
Really interesting! I am definitely curious if there's gonna be more reveals in regards to Tiabeanie, I wouldn't put it past Dagmar
@@Johnny2Cellos Thank You For Your Attention.
@@Johnny2Cellos Ooo. I almost forgot BTW. Tiabeane Is the only one who wore the crown and it didn't fit her head. ((==
I can actually picture their emotional moment. Fry and Leela son starting to be erased from existence, after accomplishing what he set out to do.
Leela: sweetie are you ok?
Fry: yeah champ your looking a little pale.
Son: yeah I'm -ohh he starts to fade. Leela catch their son from falling.
Fry: buddy!
Leela: sweetie!
Son: guess this is what I get for messing with time. Ha haha. And I thought I would be okay like the time you did it Dad.
Fry: what's happening to you?
Son: my best guess by changing outcome of this event a new timeline has been set and the one I'm from is erased from time and I haven't been born.
Fry: but we don't want you to go away.
Leela:we love you!
Son: I love you guys too. More than you ever know.
While hugging Fry and Leela he says final words to his parents.
Son: Mom from the time you brought me into this universe you showered me with nothing but love and at times a little too much. But I understand why you did it.
Leela: really sweetie?
Son: yeah. You wanted me to know what a parents love was like since you never did as a child. Until you met grandma and grandpa later on in life. You loved me more than any mom in history could ever have. When I was sick you never left my bedside. When I was having trouble with bullies you taught me how to as dad put it kick ass. Bruce Lee style.
Fry: that's my boy.
Son: Dad I'm not going to lie at times you drove me nuts and got us both in trouble.
Son:you gave me a box condoms on my 13th birthday.
Leela:HE DID WHAT?
Fry:ok that's pretty bad. But it was for a good reason. Right?
Son: since I was taller and looked a little older than most kids my age back then you wanted to make sure I was prepared in case some highschool girls tried to get in my pants.
Fry: sounds reasonable.
Son: But you were always there for me when I needed to have some guy time and moral support. Not to mention you taught me how to breakdance and we won a father son breakdancing competition.
Fry:ha haha I still got it huh?
Son:yep. My point is you guys were the greatest parents anyone can ask for and I'm glad to be your son. I love you guys.
Fry and Leela with tears in their eyes and a sad smile:we love you too son. And then he fades away leaving fry and Leela. They cry and hug mourning the lost of their son.
Awwww…wow, you are such a great writer! That was so perfect. I’m actually crying. AND I can hear all of their voices in my head.

You sound tired in this one. hope you're doing ok, love the vids so much
Johnny 2 Cellos, don't you know that movies are out and miniseries are in? I think a more serialized, limited-run return for Futurama is preferable to a movie.
The whole “moving backwards through time” thing made me think of that movie TENET (didn't watch it but I saw a YT vid on it)
There’s a Doctor Who audiobook where the Third Doctor, Jo, the Brigadier and Benton get caught in reverse time, which the Doctor refers to as retrocausation (“events before their cause”).
Think the only reason they might not consider the whole "Sent into the past to change the past and prevent their own existence" thing is that they already did that with the guy who was from the future and ran against Nixon to try to prevent the robot revolution. Ended up winning and prevented himself from needing to exist since Nixon then lost, which just made Nixon win in the end. But i love the idea of their son/daughter having a part in a final movie as a last hurrah to the series.
O.O i want to see this play out sooo badly...
I want this so badly now!
I know nothing about futurama but the "shut up and take my money" meme will always be my favorite
Which cast and crew members do we harass to get this to happen? :p
No kidding, this would be the absolute BEST way to end such an amazing show.

A backwards walking/talking time traveler could have been really cool and really creepy, like something out of Twin Peaks.
It could of been hilarious. Talking backwards is like gibberish you could make some funny jokes on what they are trying to say with Fry and Benders stupidity. Then professor could get have a invention that corrects his speech
I thought Fry's Son would have normal eyes and hair purple
Can you do an episode analysis on the episode the sting, it’s one of my favourites and it’s in my opinion one of the best episodes of Futurama.
Thank you ✌🏻♥️
Hello fellow Futurama fans and comment section friends ♥️♥️ be well and i genuinely hope you all have a lovely weekend 😘
I hope you have one too
I wish that was the final episode when Fri and Leela did have a child
I think that because of time paradox, he can't cease to exist. How can he go back in time to warn them if he doesn't exist? I think if Fry and Leela die while he is really young (have this take place when he is already the age they die) and they realize this information is how they have to sacrifice themselves to beat the brain things. So this is that closure he never got as a kid and this allows them to say goodbye to him before they have to sacrifice themselves
Leela does have a delta brainwave. This was confirmed in "The Day the Earth Stood Stupid" where she was under the stupefying effects of the brainspawn attack.
I need this as a movie!!!!! Funny or not it will be fantastic!
