  • The Mall at Barnes Crossing is an occupied, but rather weak mall. The interior is bland, but a more pressing matter is a vacancy rot starting to spread.

Serviceable interior & lovely exterior--the brick really picks up those sunset colors. And it still has a bookstore!

This mall seems to be doing okay as far as malls go. It is pretty bland I can agree with that. I miss the malls from the 60’s-90’s when they had character. It reminds me of a hospital; white and sterile. I really love the south! I’m a northerner that moved south. I homeschool so I don’t know anything about the school system. I’m sorry that you were sick. My 9 year old daughter recently had a stomach bug for a few days. I appreciate your pushing through. I enjoyed the video!

Used to visit this mall in 2001. Very nice mall seeing how it was the only mall within many miles of most cities in North Mississippi (excluding Memphis area). Lots of people from surrounding areas frequent this mall, including those from Oxford, MS (home of Ole Miss) which is an hour away. They still keep it clean for an old mall. As for your crime stats, I'd rather take my chances in Tupelo than Hattiesburg. Lots of gang crime in Hattiesburg and two Hattiesburg PD Officers shot and killed on a traffic stop there in 2015. Your Whataburger may have been nice but Vicksburg has its heavy share of crime. Venture past the freeway area and see what I mean. And of course, Jackson is a shite hole/cess pool of unimaginable crime. In the Jackson suburb city of Ridgeland, , there's a dying mall called Northpark. But bring your ballistic vest!

I’ve been watching this mall since 2017 and it is holding steady. As matter of fact it has made somewhat of a comeback since then. This in spite of the closing of sears in 2019.
You should see Barnes Crossing mall on weekends. It’s nothing but wall-to-wall people. I think that that’s when they make most of their money which makes it easy for them to have a trickle of traffic during the week.
Mississippi may rank 50th in a lot of things however it doesn’t rank 50th in low cost of living, high percentage of the working age population employed and standard of living. It’s much closer to 50 than most states when it comes to crime like New York California and Illinois ranking towards the top. Those are the stat’s important to most people.

I have lived in a lot of states, including Florida, Texas, Michigan, Tennessee, Colorado, Georgia and now Mississippi . Mississippi, by far has been the greatest and best day I’ve ever lived in. Low taxes, cheap gas, cheap food, very little regulation whatsoever and the government basically leaves you alone and stays out of your business. What more could anybody asked for? If that makes Mississippi rank 50th in the union then I’ll take it.
It’s funny how people bash Mississippi, but when it comes to escaping the tyranny of a blue state, states like Mississippi are the first places they come to.

My take is many better looking malls have been torn down in the past ten years.

I’m sorry your trip was plagued by illness but you missed some good points about Barnes Crossing Mall. In your tour the very nice food court was omitted as were the eight cinema movie theatre (outside entrance) and the fact there are three Belk stores, not just the women’s store. The mall seems to be doing just fine. We have been going there since it opened in 1990.

Nah. Tupelo has been blessed with heavy diversity since covid started. This mall will never be the same.

Being that tupelo has experienced ample demographic changes if you know what I mean, this mall isn't and will never be the same. It's simply passing away at a slow pace.

I like the outside of this mall way better than the inside, but I do love that carousel along with the food court. I also think this mall would look better with a fountain.😊🎠🎠⛲

As always, good video. I've heard people say Whataburger is better than In-and-Out. Those people are delusional.

Capital City Mall and Warwick Mall in PA and Rhode Island respectively come to mind. Manassas Mall in VA as well. It's had problems for such a long time, yet it keeps going on.

I must admit I am curious about what happens in Mississippi and Jackson in particular. The travelers who have wandered there usually have nothing nice to say of the former and latter.

Mississippi, for the longest time, was the worst state in the union, coming stone dead last in a wide number of good statistics like healthcare or quality of life, and coming in first for bad statistics like crime, poverty, obesity, etc, spawning the phrase "Thank God For Mississippi". And with its roots in confederacy and olde world religion, most will exercize nothing but schadenfreude for the misfortunes in MS.
Today, MS still isn't great, but it's recently been usurped by Louisiana as the worst state, which has enough violent crime amid its cities to make Detroit and Cleveland look safe.
Now, Jackson? Well, just look up Nick Johnson's visit there if you want a more comprehensive breakdown. I didn't spend long there, but when you go half a mile up one of the main drags and three quarters of the buildings are flat-out abandoned... it's not a good sign.
There's a reason people say stay out of Jackson.

Lived in Mississippi for 38 years. Now I'm in the pacific northwest because I wanted the complete opposite of Mississippi. Way better.
