I miss a lot of things growing up going to the mall. I worked at 2 different stores in my local mall and loved to peoplewatch. I liked Radio Shack. I bought my son a red, 2-foot-tall remote-controlled robot there. I also bought a nice police scanner, too. I miss a LOT of the old stores. Thanks, Rhett. Always nice to have a look back at great memories. 😊
I miss those days. My mom and I would always get separated from my dad and if we couldn't find him we'd always check Radio Shack. That's usually where he was. They're both gone now, and I almost can't believe it. I'd love to have a day at the mall with them again.
@@jenniferhansen3622 Aww, my heart goes out to you. I don't have my parents any longer either. That story of finding your dad at Radio Shack made me laugh. 😄Hold those great memories in your heart forever❤❤.
I miss the bookstores. Going to the mall was an experience. Meeting friends to go shopping, dropping by the arcade to play a round of Ms. Pac-Man and checking out the guys. We had Polsky's, O'Neil's, Sears, and Camelot Music. Claires was where we got our ears pierced. The Limited, Express, GAP, Casual Corner, Benetton, Esprit, were our go to stores. Some are still here but not like the good old days. I was sad when Payless closed. Another very relatable upload. Thank you my friend 😊
Growing up just south of Chicago, I remember our local mall having Radio Shack, Montgomery Wards, Camelot Music, Payless Shoes, and Aladdin's Castle Arcade that sticks out. A Kaybee toys was in there for a while too.
Yes! All of those stores were also here in Oklahoma City. I went to all of them. I miss the arcades especially, it was the whole context of video games in the culture that made it special, you usually had to go there to play the games (they hadn't yet fully made it into people's homes). You sometimes saw other regulars -- and play a "two player" game together. Today you can download any of them, or play with others online, still okay but not the same.
Does anyone know if Victoria's Secret is still around? I got some awesome bras there several years ago. That store was in Missoula, Montana, and I learned some very helpful hints from the sales staff there.
I was a Radio Shack Store Manager from 1980 thru 1991. Shopping Malls in the '80's were THE Central Hub of American Life, with countless throngs in attendance everyday, ESPECIALLY on weekends. Thanks for this trip down Memory Lane. Cheers!
When I was in my late teens 1970 they opened a new mall near me. My favorite store was Woolworth. They had a great sporting goods section where you could also buy target shooting supplies including ammunition. Try that today. They had a great sidewalk cafe where you could sit with a cup of coffee and your high school buddy and watch the pretty girls walk by. 😁👍 Hi Jodie! 👋😁🇦🇺👩🏻
I agree. Back then before the internet and mobile phones, all major social activities were in-person. You left home to go out and see people, and so did everyone else. Entire groups of people would attend a function all for the same shared reasons. We can't really come close to that using the internet, though all things have their pros and cons.
Former Payless ShoeSource manager here. When I noticed the prices increasing and less foot traffic (especially in mall locations) I knew it was declining. Too bad as I really enjoyed the job and wore the shoes...
I wish my small city still had a Payless. They had a decent selection of wide width shoes for women and kids. Now it's a Maurice's, and I never go in there.
I remember when Payless Shoes used to be Fayva Shoes. My mom never got me shoes there, she said they were cheaply made and wouldn't be comfortable. As a kid/teen I loved to go in and try them all on though. 😂
My first & most favorite job was with KB Toys (Kay Bee Toys). I remember when "Payless Shoes" was actually called Volume Shoes Source Lol. Without the toy, music or bookstores, today's malls just seem empty bland. Thanks Rhetty for keeping memories of happier times alive!
Spencer's was very educational. They sold a book in their 18-plus restricted section called "Basic Golf". It was very informative, and held your attention. 😄
I loved the Oak Tree. There use to be one in the Prestonwood Mall in Dallas, TX that I would frequent during my senior year of high school and after. While I don't have any more trousers I bought from there, I still have these three shirts. I guess they'd be considered vintage now! Then there was this mall in the city I lived in - they had a Hastings and a Camelot. What I liked about Hastings was that they carried imported vinyl and cassettes, but that store wasn't as hug as the Camelot which was on the upper level and pretty close to it.
Being an 80s kid, it's amazing to me that people would rather drive around to different stores or shop in an open strip mall in the weather over shopping in a mall. It's sad how antisocial the younger generations are.
💯 One thing about the mall is that you could eat, shop, be entertained, etc without concern for the weather. Once you were inside, you were good for the entire day and didn’t have to worry about being, cold, hot, or rained on. 👍🏾
Back then I was managing a Radio Shack store in a mall, and I have to say it's was one of the better times to work in especially at Christmas. Everyone seemed to be smiling, and getting along, Christmas music was playing throughout the mall, the Food court was incredible, and best part of it all the ladies were all decked out in their finest. Man those were great times. Also no one ever worried about having something really bad happen in any of the malls (compared to today). Things were so much more carefree, and relaxing.
Nobody was allowed to go into a store and steal up to a thousand dollars worth of merchandise and just walk out with it, and the proprietors couldn't even report it. I don't understand this stuff that goes on, today. Seems the whole world has gone off its rocker.
I would love to go back to the late 70s early 80s and see all the wood panel facades, brick, and bubble lighting in the malls. It looks so warm and cozy especially around Christmas
My husband and I got our champagne flutes for our wedding toast at Things Remembered, at one of our local malls, back in 2005. They were silver, with our names and wedding date engraved on them. I tied pretty white bows on the stems. They're still sitting in my curio cabinet, to this day-and my husband is still sitting right beside me-as I type this. 😊❤ I still remember the excitement of that time. Going into the store and ordering them, excitedly waiting for them to come in, and then going to pick them up. Window shopping in the mall, and eating in the food court. Though I admit that I, too, have done my share of online shopping, I really miss the time when malls were thriving. There was just something about holding something in your hands, buying something yourself, going to pick it up, something about the atmosphere of a bustling mall, that online shopping could just never compare to.
Agree, agree, agree! Nothing like the physical experience and knowing what you're getting when you get it. To this day, hubby and I refuse to shop online. We just don't trust it. We're probably in the minority, but we don't care.
Miss going to the mall especially around the hollidays. It wasnt Christmas until you went to the mall and saw all the decorations and going into all the stores trying to find that perfect gift and then taking it home the same day to wrap
Rhett, I enjoyed these memories about shopping malls that we loved. One memory in particular I have is the last time me and my late mother shopped at the mall and we had lunch before we went home. This mall was still in the process of adding stores at the time. Have a fantastic weekend. Take care 🐎
Hi Rhett . I remember a lot of these stores being in malls . A few that I remember seeing back then that have disappeared are Suncoast video stores and Brooks and Casual Corner which were women's clothing stores and Kaybee toy stores.
Bought many a cassette tapes from Tape World and Camelot Music! They both were in competition in my Mall back in the 80's. Plus Christmas time was my favorite time at the Mall, the decorations, Santa, window displays, music, made it magical for me. 😢
I remember a York steak house in our mall...summit park mall in Niagara Falls New York. We would go there on Sundays after church. The mall is permanently closed now, but i remember going there to hang out with friends. Some of the stores mentioned in this video were in that mall.
Payless is one the very missed stores in our Mall. The Logan Valley Mall use to be a Mecca for shopping in central Pennsylvania. It's a ghost town now with a community College using part of the building. It is at least keeping it open. Rave and The Deb are two stores friends and I still talk about missing. Macy's is very open and sparse, but still open. I did find two new stores open on my last trip. A resale shop and a local furniture store! Nittany Mall in State College is slated to be turned into a casino!
I've been working at a mall part time (2nd gig) since the 80s. Something about being in a mall. Meet great people and see the lastest merch first. And good discounts.
This is a confessional...Knowing we were going to the Mall afterwards was the only thing we looked forward to about going to Church on Sundays. Online shopping doesn't have a food court or arcades. Kids these days don't what they missed.
My ten year old son loves going to the mall, when his father and I tell him stories on how malls used to have arcades, toy stores, all of the stores we used to have and show him these types of videos, he tell us that we need to bring everything back and not shop online.
@@CherryBlossom28479my kiddo and I enjoy going to the mall together. She also goes with my husband. We hit up FYE records, Spencer's, GameStop, and Barnes & Noble books. The food court has the staples and has added a great new gelato place.
I met my best friend in Things Remembered in 1995. She was the manager of the store. Then when they shut down her store, she went into banking. Lots of great memories at the store. Rest In Paradise, Queen RO.
Z-Gallery here in SF was one I really missed! I was just talking about a behemoth mall in Cupertino, CA - Vallco Fashion Park that my dad and all three of my brothers worked on eventually in the late 70s to early 80s as the expansion of it continued! In recent years I've read that the entire property has been flattened!
Yeah still hard to believe it is gone. It was such a nice place and they even had a bakery in there. Just an empty space now; the elaborate development planned for the site got hung up in legalities. Glad we hit to experience it!
@@RhettyforHistory I veg out to your videos. I usually give it a few months so I can watch multiple videos. This one hit the nostalgia button big time even though I was never a mall kid. Watching the 1990s Things Found in Every House now and then on to the next!
I remember driving 90 miles to go to the mall then one was built in my hometown. It was the place to be seen on the weekends. So many stores that are gone now.
Thanks for another informative and entertaining video. I live in California and we had B. Dalton bookstore in the malls. It was formerly named Pickwick Books. Very few bookstores in malls now. There are still some Barnes and Nobles around and I still enjoy visiting those.
There was a Radio Shack in my local mall as a kid. It was right across from A&A Records and Tapes.. My first part time job when I was 12 or 13. I miss those days!
SoCal GenX'er here, once again dropping some mall stores that'll hopefully be remembered. Casa De Candles (lotta hippie stuff!) J.K.Gill's (think Staples, but smaller) The Tinder Box (the scent alone was nostalgic) Small World Gift and Novelties (similar to Spencers) Karl's Toys & Hobbies (only one I knew of was at Puente Hills)
Hopefully some of them will stay around. And I do agree we had too many. I didn't realize how many small towns once had them I thought only larger cities had them.
Asia still has large and thriving malls these days. They're always busy, and like it was in the 80s in North America, a lot of it is about socializing.
You can probably make several videos on defunct mall stores. The list is quite long. I remember stores like the Chess King, Deb's (my sisters went there), Maurice's, B.Dalton's, Waldon Books, K-B Toys, Media Play, Merry-go-Round, Fashion Bug (sisters also shopped there), and Kinney Shoes, to name but a few! Malls will be with us though their numbers will continue to decline along with traditional mall stores.
Maurice's is still around, especially in small Midwestern towns. They really aren't my style but it's literally the only women's clothing store where I live.
There was a time in my life I was at the mall almost every weekend and would spend the entire day there with friends, my mom and sister, or just by myself. It was always so fun to go. It’s sad this generation will never have memories like that.
Musicland and Circus World were two that come to mind when I think about malls stores not on your list. I loved Camelot Music and Radio Shack. Bought my first PC at Radio Shack. Another store that escapes me was a camera store where I bought my first SLR camera in the 80’s.
I remember going to Harmony Hut to check out the tapes in the $2.99 bin,and maybe buy some Ampex blank cassette tapes.I had a buddy that worked at Karamel Korn and he would 'hook us up' for 25 or 50 cents. The highlight was Spencer Gifts with the cool black light posters and lava lamps. Last but not least was checking out the 'foxes'!! Loved the chicks tops and hairstyles!!!
It’s not difficult to get nostalgic and feel a little melancholy when watching videos of this nature. The 70’s, 80’s and even into the 90’s were the best times for going to the mall and shopping at these stores and so many others that are no longer with us. So sad. 😞
And, the nature of the culture at those times -- just better, over all. There were bad things that happened back then, too, but not nearly how it is, today.
I have heard of target and Macy's. But not the majority of the stores in the video. But I found it interesting to learn about the other stores that once existed in the malls and shopping centers. But I used to shop at Payless and radio shack I got my first cell phone at radio shack back in 2000. now all of them are long gone. I miss going to many of the stores that are gone now. Thank you for the videos and memories.
Same. It's not the same as it was in my prime shopping days (late 90s, early 00s). But I'm sure the teens from the first store in CA would say the same to me 😅
Omg Delia’s and Mandee was my jam! And Filene’s basement from time to time. VIM was a denim store not sure if that was just an NYC thing or not. I love these videos!
I’ve never heard of Filene’s basement but it explains a quote from The Office by Dwight Schrute to a female guest at Pam and Jim’s wedding. I never understood his reference to “Filene’s basement” and I’ve watched “Office” episodes over and over - this one stumped me. I’m assuming this is a regional company? The Office setting being in Scranton PA. I’m in Virginia so I have no idea.
There was one store in both our malls here that was really popular and kind of cool that I always wondered what happened to them. It was called something like Crystal visions or Crystal wonders. They had all kinds of new age stuff, crystals, rain sticks, jewelry, hippy stuff, kids toys for learning and much more. Never seen or heard anything about it since the big mall closed.
Foleys at North Park in Dallas was my all time favorite department store. Their Red Apple Sales could not be beat. You could put the same look together at Foleys from Neimans, Dillards, or Nordstrom for hundreds of dollars less. When Macys took them over, the merchandise changed and the great sales disappeared. I miss the 80's and 90's.
Wow, I didnt realize Things Remembered closed down all their stores last year. There is a Radio Shack about 20mins from me still going. But its no where near what it was the 80s & 90s. I didn’t know Babbages turned into Game Stop; interesting! Thanks for sharing these!
In the 80’s and 90’s some of my favorite stores were Ups and Downs, Brooks, Rave, and Fashion Bug. I think Brooks was my favorite. They had the cutest clothes and I could always find my back to school outfit there lol
So many memories!! I looked forward to going to the local malls(Memphis) as a kid in the 70's. When i learned to drive(1985), me and my family or my buddies used to go to malls to check out the girls. When i was in the Navy(San Diego, Long Beach, and Lakewood, CA), the mall was like a 2nd home. Now some of the malls that are still around are half empty.
I loved Man Alive, Northern Reflections, MC Sports, Lerner, Foxmoor, Spencer's, The Body Shop, Summit Stationers, Montgomery Wards, Piercing Pagoda, Disc Jockey, Brooks, gosh so many!!! No wonder people don't leave their houses! There's nowhere to go!😢
I would go to the Wayne Town Center as a teenager. That mall was demolished leaving only the JCPenney. The Fridays, Old Navy and Fortunoff (which now remains as Fortunoff Backyard Store) have migrated to separate buildings nearby. There are lots of new stores built on and around the site so it was funny why they demolished it. A Costco sits where the Fortunoff was. When it was demolished, we still have Willowbrook mall across the street so we weren’t mall less. This is in Northern New Jersey.
I never bought z. Cavaricci at merry go round BUT I did make my father take me there after he picked me up from work. I was 15 and knew my mom would not approve of the white leather bustier I was about to buy- so I took my dad. Lol lol

I miss these stores that i grew up with. Progress can be very sad 😢
I doubt that much of anything is progress anymore.

You never know what the market will do or where it will shift. A lot of people took to shopping online and receiving their purchases on the doorstep.
@@MisterMikeTexas I rarely ever buy online.

I can still remember some of the jingles of some of these stores! Kind of bitter sweet memories.

The mall is the first place I noticed for the first time ,people walking looking at there phones . Didn’t have one yet so I thought it was so strange.

Thank you for watching and sharing some of what you remember Mark!
Which mall was that? I used to live within walking distance of Orland Square Mall. I wonder if it's still there. 😂
@@au_barb Lincoln Mall in Matteson
@@au_barb Yeah Orland Square Mall is still there. It got really bad and rough though.
I still love going to malls that are doing good. But I miss some of those old stores! Thanks for the memories Rhetty!
It is great to see some malls doing well and hopefully they continue to do so. Thank you for watching my friend!
😁👍
Hi Jodie! 👋😁🇦🇺👩🏻
Hi Paul 👋😁🇺🇸👱🏼♂️
Woolworth was a great store to have around. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories with us Paul!
I wish Payless was still around, I loved the shoes.
I wish my small city still had a Payless. They had a decent selection of wide width shoes for women and kids. Now it's a Maurice's, and I never go in there.
Thank you for watching and sharing your experience working there!
@@CherryBlossom28479they are online and they are supposed to reopen some stores
I remember when Payless Shoes used to be Fayva Shoes. My mom never got me shoes there, she said they were cheaply made and wouldn't be comfortable. As a kid/teen I loved to go in and try them all on though. 😂
My first & most favorite job was with KB Toys (Kay Bee Toys). I remember when "Payless Shoes" was actually called Volume Shoes Source Lol. Without the toy, music or bookstores, today's malls just seem empty bland. Thanks Rhetty for keeping memories of happier times alive!
Chess King, Wilson Leathers, Spencer Gifts, Hickory Farms, and of course, Orange Julius were all very popular stores in our mall in central MA.
Spencer's was very educational. They sold a book in their 18-plus restricted section called "Basic Golf". It was very informative, and held your attention. 😄
Thank you for watching MrTPF1!
We actually still have a Spencer’s here in the Wellington FL mall.
We had most of those, too. I'm just now beginning to remember more of the names.
I still miss Payless ShoeSource. They had a great selection of sizes and styles of shoes at great prices.
They really were a huge loss. Thank you for watching jrebecca0195!

Thank you for watching and sharing some of the places you frequented Joseph!
Being an 80s kid, it's amazing to me that people would rather drive around to different stores or shop in an open strip mall in the weather over shopping in a mall. It's sad how antisocial the younger generations are.
Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts McPh1741!
💯 One thing about the mall is that you could eat, shop, be entertained, etc without concern for the weather. Once you were inside, you were good for the entire day and didn’t have to worry about being, cold, hot, or rained on. 👍🏾
@@CodyCole80yep, and there was always a Movie theater at the Mall too. Greatest place ever for a young guy to chat up the pretty gals.

What about small businesses and quaint shops? Many people nowadays don’t want to go to big chains or box stores they want unique mom and pop
WOW 😲! I remember Oaktree. I use to shop there back in the day. They had very nice clothing and the price was not bad at all. 😢
Thank you for watching and sharing some of your memories of Oaktree!
Love the ol, days 😔thanks for the memories.

I would love to go back to the late 70s early 80s and see all the wood panel facades, brick, and bubble lighting in the malls. It looks so warm and cozy especially around Christmas
I used to love walking into the mall and smelling the giant cookies, giant pretzels and other goodies.😊🩷
That's always the best! They were great at luring you in with smells. Thank you for watching and sharing that aspect of the malls.
We're probably in the minority, but we don't care.
im glad our malls in the Dallas area are still open! most since the 80s. and still have Dipping Dots! 🙂

Take care 🐎
Thank you for watching and sharing a memory of you and your mother Brenda! I hope you have a great weekend as well!
Hi Rhett . I remember a lot of these stores being in malls . A few that I remember seeing back then that have disappeared are Suncoast video stores and Brooks and Casual Corner which were women's clothing stores and Kaybee toy stores.
I worked at a Suncoast! Such a fun, basically zero responsibility, job.
Spencer’s was always a fun store to go to in the mall. Always looking at the black light posters.
I miss that mall, loved it before the fire.

Suncoast!
My ten year old son loves going to the mall, when his father and I tell him stories on how malls used to have arcades, toy stores, all of the stores we used to have and show him these types of videos, he tell us that we need to bring everything back and not shop online.

In recent years I've read that the entire property has been flattened!
Yeah still hard to believe it is gone. It was such a nice place and they even had a bakery in there. Just an empty space now; the elaborate development planned for the site got hung up in legalities. Glad we hit to experience it!

I remember a real estate investor saying years ago that America had too many malls and that half of them needed to close. Sadly, he was right.
Hopefully some of them will stay around. And I do agree we had too many. I didn't realize how many small towns once had them I thought only larger cities had them.
Awesome, good morning Rhetty
Hello and thank you for watching!
Asia still has large and thriving malls these days. They're always busy, and like it was in the 80s in North America, a lot of it is about socializing.
As always, thanks for taking me back. Can't wait for your next video

You're right about being able to make several videos on this subject. This is the second one so gar. Thank you for watching Greg!
Maurice's is still around, especially in small Midwestern towns. They really aren't my style but it's literally the only women's clothing store where I live.
No cell phones, no internet,
Everyone was at the mall on the weekends.
I'd love to go back to 1975 and hit the reset button
There was a time in my life I was at the mall almost every weekend and would spend the entire day there with friends, my mom and sister, or just by myself. It was always so fun to go. It’s sad this generation will never have memories like that.
I just miss shopping malls💔

You aren't alone.
Musicland and Circus World were two that come to mind when I think about malls stores not on your list. I loved Camelot Music and Radio Shack. Bought my first PC at Radio Shack. Another store that escapes me was a camera store where I bought my first SLR camera in the 80’s.
You mentioned a couple good ones there. Thank you for watching and sharing some of your memories Jimmy!
Would that be Ritz Camera store.
@@JaneDoe-ps6ve Nope. They were also located in the mall and I did use them for film developing.
I've never heard of any of those. Must be an eastern thing.
