This, sadly, is an episode we hoped we would NEVER have to make. And yes, it’s a rant, but this time, about our main Porsche dealership.
This week’s episode is about a failure of customer service at a major Porsche dealer - what happened, and how it was handled.
But we also touch on a darker side of Porsche new car buying - how Porsche dealers are handling the allocation of the more special GT cars, and whether we are prepared to play the game for the new 992 generation.
    Ask yourself this:
Do you feel valued by your car dealer?
Do you believe it when they say they are working on your behalf to get the cars you want?
Do you think they actually care about your long term business?
If the answer to these questions is “yes,” then you may be shocked by the content of this episode.
If the answer’s no, then prepare to have your suspicions confirmed.
    Now, an even stickier question:
Have you ever been asked to buy cars you don’t want, just to qualify for the ones you do? Does this make you feel dirty?
If the answer’s “yes” , this week’s episode is for you.
Does this episode mean we will now be blacklisted by this dealership for daring to criticise it? Possibly.
Were we ever in line to get one of the 992 GT cars anyway? No.
Is it better to reveal this situation to CarGuys viewers and Porsche itself. Yes.
You may think I am being way too sensitive to be annoyed in this way about a lack of communication.
You may think the onus should always be on the customer to contact the dealer to check if things are okay.
You may think that of course new car allocations are rigged in favour of mates, big spenders etc, so stop being so naive.
But this channel is all about our experiences, feelings and the truth about our journey in the car world.
Have we contacted Porsche Portsmouth about this issue? Yes.
Having heard nothing, after 46 days I contacted the Sales Manager, outlined my concerns, and we discussed what had happened. We have since decided that, unfortunately, our interests are no longer aligned, and it is now doubtful that I will buy another new Porsche from Porsche Portsmouth.
If I do not feel a valued customer, I’m afraid it’s game over.
    Thank you for watching

Lol, like the quote. In reality the Salesman has not lost anything. He’s got the sales for the ‘desirable’ allocation anyway. So anything Damian is going to buy he can sell full allocation. What he needs is a people to buy the SUVs at volume and the ‘old stock’ of standard dross, albeit with a Porsche badge. That isn’t Damian, unless he says ‘here’s my pin allocate some dross my way’

I get why you would want to feel valued for your custom. That is in any business relationship. Just pointing out why ‘we petrol heads’ aren’t really the focus for them. We will buy what we like.
I personally don’t care who I buy it off. Be it him, or any other dealer. Makes no difference to me really. Or them
But he could do with some help shifting the volume.
Ferrari do it. (Buy all my unsold inventory so I can class it as secondhand. You take a bit of hit but you can have one of my limited allocation). It’s just the way it is and not a surprise or anything to be upset about.

I'm into watches myself(though pre 1970 vintage) and having seen other watch collectors of current models, the "you have to have bought a load of other models, and go on a list for the 'special' models in steel" is very much a Rolex thing. It seems to be working for them mind you as that particular bubble keeps inflating and pulled what was in the past a solidly mid tier Swiss brand into the luxury stratosphere.

I have been in the business for fifteen years and I can tell you this is basically normal. I just wish that more people would focus on the real problem in a dealership and that’s management and especially the Dealer Principal. These people earn huge salaries and as you have experienced are for most part useless. When sales are good they take all the credit for their great leadership and when times are tough simply blame all the staff. Your sales guy did a s**t job but his sales manager was nowhere to be found. The biggest myth in business today is service. As always, awesome content and keep up the great work.

Most individuals have just enough funds to buy that 1 special dream car that car they would cherish and keep. Practically impossible now as you need to spend thousands on something you don't want just to have a chance..if that's the case what is the true opportunity cost? You'd be better paying over list...Money certainly goes to money...the majority of the Porsche VIP customers who bout the 918 were auto chosen for a 991R (which they flipped and made a healthy sum) and a GT2 RS which they also flipped probably offsetting the actual 918 purchase price in the 1st place. This whole thing has put me off brands like Rolex and Porsche, these models are not limited run so make them to allocation for gods sake and it would just sort the market. Rant Over....

Loved the Rant mode!! The thing that annoys me about car salesman especially the prestige brands is that they expect you to buy a car rather than sell you one! The clue should be in the job title ‘SALESman’! There’s not been many I’ve been able to build a rapport with! I could go on and on.....

I've owned half a dozen of these cars (GT cars included) and haven't bought a single one of them from a Porsche dealership. I currently only focus on the aircooled cars and if I go for a GT car, I always go for at least one generation older than what is current. Let some other poor sap eat the initial depreciation, pay the ADM, and play the terrible dealer games just to have the latest greatest. And if you do want brand new, buy the time you play all of those games, you will spend more to get it at MSRP instead of just paying the secondary market prices.

  • @tomdeville8018
    @tomdeville8018 3 роки тому +6

The dealer experience is similar to the estate agent game, it's just mind-boggling how you're treated given the sums involved. Occasionally I run into a good salesman and stick with them so my go-to Porsche dealer has had my last 3 orders. If the salesman left it would be like starting again. You can pretty much guess what your in for with the first approach. I particularly hate the finance model these days that puts cash buyers at a disadvantage. I think this is at the root of it really, volumes of people buying cars they can't afford on the drip, swapping them every two years etc. The relationship between dealer and buyer has changed. I think you're correct to identify second hand, newly new, specialist dealers as the future. I'm thinking the same, particularly with the huge hit new cars take again due to the turnover of financed cars. We need to stop buying/producing so many cars anyway and learn to look after them for the longer term. Even you guys can't keep up with all the new models :) They don't need to foster a relationship once you've signed that finance contract so they've forgotten how. Also, covid-19 will have resulted in a lot of redundancies in dealerships and showrooms empty of customers so I think they're perhaps concentrating on moving used stock and handling contract cancellations. Just a thought. Stay calm and carry on.
