Miklos Rozsa had one of the greatest careers in the history of Hollywood, and thankfully, most of all of his work has been preserved on many splendid recordings!

Hello, Fred! At this time Rozsa was exactly in the middle of his contract with MGM, where he was taken in 1949 by John Green. Here Rozsa uses brass not only to represent epic atmosphere of the adventure ( marked with cymbals ), but also to give the beautiful melodies the consistence of the strings. He can also use woodwinds for this. Rozsa was a dedicated historical researcher of instruments. He certainly knew that the woodwind was the first instrument in the history of humanity ( 60 thousand years b.C., made from the tíbia bones of birds or humans ), in the same way that he knew that at the time of real action in which the film takes place, 1675 in England, the horn ( a brass instrument ) appeared in France. Perhaps it is no coincidence that the first person to suggest that Rozsa to write for cinema ( composer Arthur Honegger ) and the first to give him a chance in 1937 ( director Jacques Feyder ) were both French... Thanks and bye!!

Mikós Rózsa was a workhorse for the various studios, earning 17 Oscar nominations and winning for Ben-Hur and Hitchcock's Spellbound. I especially love the strings in 'Mission/Frame-up" really sublime moving from romantic to foreboding and back again. It is going to be a fun weekend re-listening to this! Thanks Fred.

Thanks for posting this excellent Rozsa score. I too have the FSM release paired with Knights Of The Round Table, but I haven't listened to it in awhile. Your posts always make me want to revisit my own collection. Thanks for reminding us soundtrack nuts!

“The King’s Thief” (1955) is your colorful 1950’s swashbuckling adventure, with costumes, action and love, starring Edmund Purdon, Ann Blyth, David Niven and a young Roger Moore.
While the plot is not really flawless (a cause, why the movie did not really stand the test of time), the music is certainly not!
Written by MGM’s Miklós Rózsa - the composer put out an exciting (swashbuckling) score, as he would always do, for better or lesser good movies… Enjoy!

IMHO Mr. Rozsa's spellbound is just second to Mr. Silvestri's Predator 2.
I always felt that Mr. Rozsa was a composer who does not compose music but actually thinks what's the film is about and composes it with that in mind.

Thank you for releasing this suite, "The King's Thief" is one of my favourite films!
Yes, it has flaws, but there's so much to enjoy, e.g. the witty dialogue during the sword fight in the cabin, having David Niven playing the villain, etc.
If there is a film ripe for a remake, it is this one.

What a fun score! A little conventional, but catchy and thrilling.

Grazie Fred for the new version❤👍🏻
Miklós Rózsa is among my favorite composers of all time!👏🏻😍
It's been a few years since they broadcast it here in Italy, but I haven't seen it yet.
For critics, it is a mediocre swashbuckling film, which sadly wastes a good cast (there is also a young Roger Moore). It was the last film directed for MGM by the modest Robert Z. Leonard.
The film was also directed, uncredited, by Hugo Fregonese. Fregonese was replaced by Leonard after an attack of flu which initially made him unfit for the role. When he was ready to return to direct the filming, he definitively gave up due to disagreements with the production.
According to Leonard Maltin the film is "sumptuous" and features a great performance from David Niven.
PS: Today, November 28th, is my birthday!🎂🍕🍔🍟🍻🎉🎁🎈🤟🏻🥳
I'm not well these days, due to total flu.
When there is more time, I will tell you about myself.❤🙏🏼

I love Rozsa, but so many of his scores seem to contain variations on the same handful of themes. But then you can say this about most of the best-known film composers, who have their own style and voice. Think: Maurice Jarre, John Barry, Bernard Herrmann, for example
