“Guns Of San Sebastian” (1968), stars Anthony Quinn as Alastray, a searched man, who found sanctuary by a priest in a little village. As this village and its inhabitants get oppressed by Indians, led by Charles Bronson’s character Teclo, it is time to fight back…
Little known today, this western, spawned during the golden era of Italo-westerns and just before Bronson’s breakthrough in “Once Upon A Time In The West” (1968). It is directed by Henri Verneuil and still worth a watch and even more worth a listen, as composer Ennio Morricone wrote a great score with a handful of themes and colorful orchestrations, making use of many of his trademarks and favorised singers (Edda Dell’Orso and Gianna Spagnulo), staying fresh as ever, which we gladly can hear and appreciate now, on what would have been the composer’s 95th birthday. Enjoy!
This music is the sound of pure Morricone. Really great stuff. Thanks again, Fred.
An extraordinary Morricone score. Powerful, majestic, melodic and emotionally sweeping in content.
Thanks for this Fred Ennio Morricone is my all-time favourite, I love the Untouchables soundtrack.
Descanse en Paz Gran Compositor: Maestro Ennio Morricone.
What a lovely score by Morricone! The strings and vocals in 'Kinita's Plea' are superb realization of the art of orchestration. I can only assume that this was The Master himself. What a redemption arc - played out musically. Thanks Fred.
Maestro Ennio Morricone fue y será el Mejor Compositor de Italia, y Música Western.
Maestro Ennio Morricone vivira inmortal en su Música.
Great soundtrack!! Thank you for the upload.
🙏🙏🙏🙏
Hi, Fred! It's always been a rule: if it doesn't sound like anything you've heard before, that's Ennio Morricone! Two types of choir ( mixed and sacred male ); female lyrical ( or Indian ) vocalise interspersed with instrumental sound effects, accelerated drums and viola; low piano cut by rustic flute and percussion. ( atabaque, I think ), marking absolutely stunning string sessions accompanied by a female duo giving the music a poliphonic texture... It's no coincidence that he didn't let anyone touch his orchestrations -- Morricone just looks like... Morricone!! Thanks and bye!!
".....if it doesn't sound like anything you've heard before, that's Ennio Morricone!...."
Unless you've listened to a fair amount of Morricone already, become familiar with his melodic and harmonic approach and his left-field style of orchestration, and it does sound like something you've heard before - that being Morricone. What can be tricky is to tell genuine Morricone from an imitator.
Recuerdo está película creo que fue por 1988 tenía 10 u 11 años o algo así ,genial Anthony Quinn memorable como falso cura defensor de un pueblo
Grazie Fred❤👍🏻
You paid homage to maestro Ennio Morricone, on the occasion of what would have been his birthday week.💖🔝👏🏻🤩
A pseudo-western with a rich "budget" (with a background that recalls "The Seven Samurai" by Akira Kurosawa) well made by Henri Verneuil, especially in the mass scenes. Anthony Quinn takes things a little too far.
Recently, they had rebroadcast the film on TV and in a restored version.
Maravilhosa a arte da música só Deus e capas de dar esse dom
رائع و جميل جدا .......
Para mi: Del Maestro Ennio Morricone su Mejor Score fue The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: sus mejores cuatro Soundtracks: The Trio. The Ecstasy Of Gold. The Story Of A Soldier. Intro.
I remember seeing GUNS FOR SAN SEBASTIAN in a 70mm blow-up presentation when it was theatrically released. Luckily the Warner Archive blu-ray preserves the stereophonic soundtrack of that presentation on the blu-ray release. This is Ennio Morricone at his best! Your channel, as always, is thoroughly enjoyable.
Thank you sir. Who doesn’t love Mr Morricone. Request: if it’s not an imposition, could you play some romantic or light hearted compositions. With what’s going on, it’s really depressing. On second thought: Exodus? And then light hearted. Just a thought. Apologies for my presumption.
Thank you for your bittersweet comment!
I am trying to please everybody as good as I can and your wish about lighthearted music is noted. :-)
Regarding EXODUS, it is a personal favorite but we faced some copyright issues with the recording some time ago. I will see, if we can get around that...
Best and stay positive!
Fred
You are heroic sir! I can’t believe I wrote that. But I love your site.
Escape to victory por favor
Great movie! Check it out!
A Quinn and C Bronson - enough said! Wonderful music. What more do you need?!
Morric0ne looks to be the climax and culmination of film music wanting to be emancipated film music, not classical, not rock, not jazz, not pop. We could maybe call it folk film music
