Making coffee in the tent I bemoaned once more how sweaty it was by 08:00. How quickly I will forget once I’m back on the northern edge of Europe as autumn descends.. One thing I do hope to remember from these islands is the sheer number of tiny lizards running out of the way on every trail, always too fast to catch on camera.
Once packed up I explored the sandy tracks of the Valle Dei Mostri and its curious rock formations before returning to town for a last swim on an aeolian black sand beach, and some lunch. Polishing off the last of the crema di pistaccio jar I’d opened not 24 hours ago demonstrates why I’m not allowed the stuff ordinarily 😆
I waved goodbye to the islands from the afternoon ferry, very sorry to be leaving so soon. If you’re planning a trip there be sure to allow much more than a week! And so it was with some glumness I disembarked back into Milazzo; the saddest girl ever to arrive in Sicily. I know, I’m very spoiled.
The advantage of course of returning somewhere familiar is how much easier everything is; I already had wifi codes and knew where to find the budget supermarket, but most crucially I had recorded on the map a scenic and safe place to pitch my tent. It was 6kms out of town but worth the trip if only for the fun of identifying the very spot my tent had laid 4 months back as I’d made my way west to Palermo.
To cheer myself up on my last night in Italy I’d treated myself to some nicer cheese and a bar of chocolate to supplement my standard dinner. Onwards, to Corsica!

Thank you, this is good advice. I get shy though and feel weird sticking my camera in peoples faces until I’ve got to know them quite well. Hopefully I will meet some more people as I travel through France, but folk don’t approach me nearly as much in Europe as in the Arab world 😉
