I started driving a cab in the '60s and have over 50 years experience in the business on and off. In those days the rate per mile in Manhattan was 75 cents per mile, but the fleet furnished the car and paid for gas. With Uber, 50 years later, I got paid 76 cents per mile and I pay all expenses on the car including gas, tax, insurance, plus any tickets or accidents.
Working for Uber was one of the most humiliating experiences of my life. Ever work for the public? Some people expect you to be a slave.
One lady asked me to wait for her while she did her shopping at the supermarket. I politely explained that I'm only getting paid $6 dollars per hour for waiting time and declined. She gave me One Star and I was eventually fired for a low rating. Uber doesn't fire you: they just prevent you from getting into your app and you can't even complain to anybody. To them it's like you never existed. It's as easy as stepping on a cockroach, completely devoid of any human feeling or empathy. You're working for a computer, not human beings.
Now in my 70s can remember Jimmy Hoffa on TV. What ever happened to the American labor movement? Over eighty years of struggle down the drain - all so Uber can exploit desperate workers.

There was an explosion of Uber drivers in Manila because of incentives given to them if they reach a daily quota. It was so profitable that people would buy cars on low down payment and hire drivers with 60/40 profit sharing after Uber took their cut. When Uber stopped the incentives because they had enough drivers, lots of people sunk into debt trying to pay for a car they couldn't pay for anymore with what they made from Uber.

    • @timothyhansen6581
      @timothyhansen6581 6 років тому

Well, one of the problems is that at some point they were offering to get new drivers separate vehicles meant specifically for Uber driving. They bought the car outright, then gave it to the driver. Well, as you can probably guess, this resulted in a lot of new drivers in a lot of areas, which meant each individual driver made less. Thus, they couldn't afford to make the payments on the car, so Uber lost money on that.
On top of which, as soon as companies like Lyft started showing up Uber had to reduce the rates it was charging per fare even further, & since they only take 20 -> 30% of the fare in the first place that means they made even less money than they were making before.
Then, you have the fact that they've apparently taken to the Wal-Mart model of operating a business - expand into every market that exists, whatever the cost. They've only been here in the Wilmington, NC, area since about mid-2015, & they are trying to get into as many markets as possible.
There's also the fact that when they first started up, they were giving drivers their own smartphones that had been rigged to do data-only, solely for the purposes of using the Uber driver app. They don't do it anymore, but that wasn't cheap either.
Then there's all the legal fees incurred from their continued fight to keep from being labeled a "for hire" or "taxi" company - which is what they actually are. If they get put under the same kinds of regulations that taxi companies have to deal with - which is what keeps a lot of the taxi companies honest - then they'll go bankrupt practically overnight & disappear - as they should.

You forgot to mention a few other things:
    1. Uber takes 46% of the fare on short trips from Veteran Drivers and 51% from New Drivers hired after September 2015. “Lyft” ONLY takes 20% Regardless of how LONG or SHORT the trip is..
    2. Uber charged riders a "Safe Rider Fee" and kept 100% of the Safe Rider Fee.
    3. Uber Drivers complained to Uber about taking the "Safe Rider Fee" due to the Fact that Uber is NOT the one providing Safe Rides, the Drivers are. Drivers stated in their complaints that the "Safe Rider Fee" should go to the Drivers since Drivers are the ones providing the "Safe Rides". Uber then changed the name to a "Booking Fee" to Justify taking the "Safe Rider Fee".
    4. Uber lowers the amount of Ride Requests for Drivers and ALSO takes away their ability to receive "Surge Requests" when a Driver complains about Uber.
    5. Uber uses "Tech-Tortion" to Manipulate their Drivers to do as Uber wants. You either "AGREE" to Ubers Terms or you DON'T get to work. "Definition of: Tech-Tortion" - When Uber uses Technology to Extort Services from their Drivers.
    Exploitation: ex·ploi·ta·tion (ĕk′sploi-tā′shən)
    1. The act of employing to the greatest possible advantage.
    2. Utilization of another person or group for selfish purposes.
    3. An advertising or publicity program.
Well. Looks to me like Uber has the first 2 of those definitions covered. Uber is quick to get more drivers on the road to make Uber more money. However, the drivers are the ones held financially responsible for every aspect of the job. All Uber does is get the driver through whatever process necessary to get them on the road. The Uber Lease program is a perfect example of how little Uber cares. Brace yourself for this one. This is really quite HORRIBLE!
    “The Uber Lease Program”
With the Uber lease program, a driver can lease a vehicle with no credit checks and pay a weekly fee. However, if the driver depends on Uber to support a family and lives paycheck to paycheck, there’s a problem. The driver can never get sick or go on family leave because Uber will continue to take the money out of the drivers bank account, whether rent is due or not. Uber doesn’t care if all you have in your bank account is the rent or mortgage. Uber is still going to take that lease payment. After all, Uber has complete access to the drivers bank accounts. There is no escape.
ANYONE who uses Uber for Short Trips should be “ASHAMED” of themselves for ENABLING Uber to Exploit and Abuse their Drivers. That could be Your Son, Daughter, Mother, Father and Let’s Face It…. Your Grandparents out there STRUGGLING. Uber DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE against AGE.

I've had so many problems with uber I'm San Diego CA drivers don't speak English, can't follow basic directions, speed, and text on the phone while driving. Or try to extend the ride or you have to tell them to end the ride because they won't if you don't tell them once you arrive at your destination plus alot of cars are stinky

the problem with Uber (and Grab, and other services) is that people who wouldn't normally buy cars would buy a new car (or a fleet of cars) just to sign up for these services -- increasing the traffic congestion instead of alleviating it.
This is what's happening in Manila.

If an Uber driver gets a DUI, they go through the same kind of thing a regular driver would & will be back on the road driving Uber again the minute they're off restriction. A taxi driver getting caught in a DUI will get their hack permit revoked & not be able to drive a cab again. The only area where Uber drivers are worse off is that if they do get a DUI it'll be their own PERSONAL vehicle that gets impounded, rather than just having another driver come bring the cab back to the company.
