  • This edition of the deLay Band was known for stretching the blues band envelope, but here they lay down a raucous Chicago-style shuffle. Produced by Kathy Rankin through the facilities of Multnomah Community TV. Kudos to Kathy for documenting so many great Waterfront Blues Festival moments!

Paul Delay was one of the great American blues harmonica players. I had the good fortune of attending a Paul Delay concert in Ashland, Oregon (in 1989). Paul passed on in 2007. Paul played slide harmonica.

Such an amazing talent. The guy was the total package: Great singer, great lyrical composer and an awesome chromatic player. The band was super solid and so very adept at creating fresh and new musical landscapes - always with that undertone of blues and rhythm and blues infused in their arrangements. Not an under-rated musician. Anyone that knew Paul would freely admit he was among the best of the best. But in the blues world, that's a pretty small pond and exposure has always been tough in the genre. His music is timeless and hopefullywill continue to be promoted by those that loved it so much. I don't think you can seriously study or get anything from modern blues without a solid chapter dedicated to this guy.

I like it !!!! A great classic blues sound, judging from the other comments he is no longer with us. Ronnie Shelist mentioned his name so I checcked it out. Great player

Yes, apologies for the oversight! This and so many other Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival videos wouldn't exist without the skill and efforts of Kathy Rankin. It's time to stop saying the Late Great Paul delay and say The Legendary Paul Delay. Yeah the time is just flying by. I was right down in front there somewhere. Sure didn't think those would be the good old days.

One of my idols. Paul could blow the cover plates of that harp if he wanted. A shit hot player. Great on chromatic too. A Legend.
RIP. Paul deLay. My 3 kids always sang along to ' Chalk and Roll '.When I took them out, in the car. Thank you so much. ❤🙏❤

Pretty sure I put that volume control in the bullet mic Paul is using here. A very special mini Allen and Bradley audio taper - barely fit but a very functional mod if I do say so myself. A special order item that I think I still have a NOS one of somewhere on the parts shelf.

@Krankinproductions Yes, it's been awhile. Unfortunately, the years were hard on my VHS copy of this video--or on my VCR (it may be the culprit). Listen carefully and you can hear the volume dip and recover. It would be awesome if you could digitize and post these Paul deLay Band performances. Or just get a new tape to me--that'd probably work too. Thanx!

Thanks for this ! Great song, and the performance incredible.
I had the opportunity to see and hear Paul play about this time back in the midwest.. Being a harp player myself, I was blown away by his awesome talents and down home tone.
Wish I had been able to enjoy him more than that one time, but will always be glad for that.
Was this a Fender Bassman RI here for his rig ?

Ain't it the truth, Kathy. One minute you're 30, the next minute you're--gasp--60 (OK, you're not there yet, but I'm here to tell you it seems to happen that fast).

  • @tracylouis

No, I believe the sound was good the first time I played the tape. But when I played it a second time into the computer, my VCR "ate" it. That is, one side of the tape got chewed up a bit. You can see it. :-(

I'm looking for a video of the deLay band doing Be On My Merry Way. Lyrics go...You can drive a nail, you can pull it out, but you're still gonna leave a hole. I said, 'Lord, have mercy on me. I'm tired of bein' treated this way. If you don't want my lovin', I'll just be on my merry way.' Can anyone help? Thanks.
