  • I have started running some numbers on this log and what I have found may or may not surprise you.. But it did me!! We go over how much firewood is in these logs, how much they'll bring at the sawmill, and how much we can get out of the lumber if we mill them ourselves!!

    Thanks for the information Brandon. You did some great research man. I’ve often wondered how much certain logs would be worth in firewood but never ran the numbers on it.
    Very much enjoyed it!!

      My curiosity got the best of me for sure! I was quite surprised at the outcome both ways. I did get confirmation from a local sawyer to me that I gave some logs to that he got $2.50/bf out of red oak green right off the mill. Appreciate ya Jacob 👍🏻🪓🪵

    That is an awesome looking log . Good logs are always worth more selling them than turning em into firewood . Now turn them into lumber yourself an it really pays off . As long as you have the market to sell fresh cut lumber that’s the way to go . You can always stick it an let it air dry first and a yr or 2 later it’s ready to be planed out an used but you risk the lumber cupping and twisting an an then it’s baisicaly worthless . I prefer to sell all our lumber fresh cut and for oak around here it averages 2 bd ft for fresh cut .

      I think on this Red Oak, it’s definitely better to sell green especially if the buyer is going to be using it for outdoor projects. So with it being green, I feel like $2/bf is a good selling price on green red oak 👍🏻 I definitely think having a mill is the only way to come out on harvesting logs. Keep as much of it in-house as possible

      That’s what I thought as well Jeremiah. I know that those estimates are in the higher side and for kiln dried lumber, but even at $2/bf for green lumber it’s still a pretty good profit. I think the key in a smaller scale is just having your own mill. That’s the only way to come out on it

      It was really an eye opener when I started running numbers. I was pretty shocked at what the log yard was paying versus what the lumber could be sold for! Even at $2/bf, it’s still a huge difference in value from log form to lumber form

  • @toddsoutsideagain
    @toddsoutsideagain 6 місяців тому

    Good info Brandon. I get told all the time on the channel “ you need to send that log to the mill” I found out that unless you have a whole bunch of logs to sell, in my area most mills don’t want to mess with it. Single logs here and there are best to find the right person who wants live edge slabs for table making🤷‍♂️ I have a couple walnut logs I’m debating on right now. Take care! See ya in a couple weeks👊🏻

    • @McKameyFarms
      @McKameyFarms  6 місяців тому +2

      You’re exactly right Todd. It seems like unless you have a mill to turn the logs into lumber yourself, then the sawmills and log yards are going to give you bare bones money on the logs. Even logs on a smaller size are still hard to handle, load and haul.

    I’ve had similar results with saw mills, they pay so low by the time I load it up, drop it, and wait on a check, I’d rather just make firewood out of it. Cant wait to see your mill in action!

      @McKameyFarms  6 місяців тому

      I’d be really frustrated as a logger. I’m sure since they provide material frequently they get treated a little better (maybe)? But either way, the sawmills are definitely getting the bigger piece of the pie in my opinion.

    Hi,
    Your thought processes contemplating what you might do with your logs was interesting. As you've found out, the more people involved in a business, the higher the cost, for some reason, everyone wants a profit on their time and equipment! It might be helpful to talk more with some of the folks in your area that have small scale lumber making mills, see if they think they're in a good business which might better help you decide whether the investment cost, your time requirements, etc., is something you really want to get involved in?

    • @McKameyFarms
      @McKameyFarms  6 місяців тому

      I didn’t really know what the pricing was in lumber till I started researching it and then I quickly realized that the mills were really getting a big part of the pie! At least from a small contributor. They might pay more for outfits that bring them truckloads of logs? Like you said, the more hands that touch it, the thinner the margin. I appreciate you watching and commenting David

    Around here red oak brings 40 cents a bf. So it would be a 50.00 log maybe or 300 for the cord if you split and sold. Most that buy logs here for fire wood production just buy saw mill logs since it's worth it when delivered to your yard

    • @Andrew-sanders
      @Andrew-sanders 6 місяців тому

      You did get a lesson on how the sawmills rob the logger. It's not because the sawmill has more money invested. They don't have close to the dollar invested in it as the logger does

    • @McKameyFarms
      @McKameyFarms  6 місяців тому

      That’s crazy! I’d say everyone would just cut logs for firewood at that cost. Like i mentioned in the video, people with small sawmills around me are charging .50-$1.00/bf just to saw folks logs for them.

    • @Andrew-sanders
      @Andrew-sanders 6 місяців тому

      @@McKameyFarms they charge close to that here to saw for people. I don't just 50 a hour since have almost nothing into milling it up. What a gallon of gas and resharpen a blade. If I hit metal they do but a blade. Right now mills give 40 cents for oak and 75 for red cedar. No walnut market close so they don't want generally. The 75 cents on cedar puts a 10 inch 8 foot log at about 25.00 then they sell at 4.00 bf. Pretty simple on who gets srewd. Land owner get a percentage then gass oil equipment and hauling. Logger might bring home 20 cents bf while mill passes 3.00

    Here my 2 cent with a grain of salt . Rough off the mill, with a lot of red oak I take $1 board / foot 🦶 still more them firewood 🪵 go to give you buddy . Still over $$$$ for that log . Now if it white oak it’s the best for whiskey 🥃 and wine 🍷 barrel premium money per / log 🪵. Hardwood easier on bandsaw mill them soft wood 🪵 buddy for cutting. Now you make your price start high because we know people like to try to knock down your price . For example start at $3 board foot 🦶 you know if drop to $2 for board foot 🦶 your still ahead in Benjamin. TAKE CARE stay with the bandsaw mill for making Benjamin.
