The park you were unsure about is The Citadel. From there the fortification around the medieval city started. Copenhagen was surrounded by a water filled moat up to the late 1850s where it was decided to do away with the fortifications on the Zealand side. The remnants on that side is the Citadel and the lakes in Østre Anlæg, Botanic Garden, H.C. Ørsted Park and Tivoli. The yellow houses you were wondering about were built in the 1600s to house the employees from the Danish Navy.
