  • The unedited video of this listening/reaction/analysis experience with all the music was a'BLOCKED by the 'Tubes....and now I am disappearing completely into Radiohead and all their delicious chord tensions and angelic vocals and anxiety-inducing lyrics and whale-song strings and angry baby robots...I was a lot more familiar with Kid A than Amnesiac coming into this but I'll be spending more time with both now.

    Easily one of the greatest musical acts of our time. Every single band member brings amazing elements to the songs. Thom's vocals just add an element that doesn't feel simulated like so many singers, even the best ones whom I admire. Ridiculously unique.

      I suspect pulk/pull revolving doors was the result of a treatment on True Love Waits, but then Radiohead decided TLW didnt belong on the album, but the treatment did. So we ended up with two songs out of it.

  • @mostlymotiongraphics2134
    @mostlymotiongraphics2134 Рік тому +5

    I love that they don't mind screwing around / experimenting with songs for long periods of time and actually share various results. So we have three versions of Morning Bell now? Two on consecutive album releases and then this dark version. There must be many good references for this (stripping Videotape from the anthemic arrangement to make it a syncopated, minimalist masterpiece, and working on Nude for ten years before releasing it are two that come to mind immediately).
    Regarding soundtracks, I recently saw a good video on when/why Radiohead songs get featured in shows and films ("The Radiohead Effect" by Fandor) and you must already know the Penderecki arc of Jonny's musical development leading to absolutely amazing scores for films like There Will be Blood. I was also delighted to unexpectedly hear "Morning Mr. Magpie" at the beginning of Mr Mercedes S01E07 "Willow Lake." Music is used effectively in this season, and this one made me so happy to hear!

    I’m pretty sure Pulk/Pull (True Love Waits version) was an actual attempt at recording True Love Waits back in 1999/2000, and then they ended up turning it into Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors and saving True Love Waits.

      @@themonkeandthesnek9997 i think he feels that way about Bloom, but his endless toying with True Love Waits strikes me as he's trying to find it. The pre-MSP live version was great, then he pulled every chord apart for MSP which felt like an intellectual exercise searching for something to work better, then just throwing the lyrics here onto a completely different bit of music.
      Adding: part of the reason I feel this way is that I once heard Nigel disparage that live version, and since then, Thom's acted like he agrees.

    Hi Ixi,
    I just wanted to say I recently stumbled on your channel, and it's been really interesting and informative watching your videos. Kid A and The Fragile are the two big formative albums of my teenage years, my first real 'wow, music can be so much more than simple entertainment' moments, and really mean a lot to me. I don't have any formal musical training, so having these songs broken down and analyzed by someone who has that education and insight has given me even more of an appreciation for them. I like learning about how things work, and music is something that's always been important to me, but I never really got an opportunity to dig deeper into why some things, some structures and compositions work, why others don't, and why certain moments in songs have that emotional impact. So thanks for doing what you do, I think it is really cool and look forward to learning more and hearing more of your original compositions as well, which are really haunting and beautiful.

    Hello ixi, I really enjoyed this video. You mentioned how much you liked Untitled Parts 1, 2 and 3. I have a theory about how they came to be. Check out the UA-cam clip in the link below. It is Radiohead’s National Anthem with only the noises and sound effects - no singing, guitars, drums or bass. I think Untitled Parts 1, 2 & 3 were the beginnings or experiments with background noises like the National Anthem below. Actually, you can hear elements of some of the tracks (like you pointed) out in Kid A for example. That’s just my theory. Regardless, they are really great listening. Often when I’m listening to Radiohead tracks, my ears are straining to hear all of that stuff that’s whirring around in the background. I think that’s one of the main reasons why I love Radiohead and why they are so great. Anyway, I love your channel. Your taste in music aligns very closely with my own. Keep up the great work.

    Pyramid Song is shaped like a pyramid. The shape of the sound... The 3 basic chords.. Do you see musical shapes? Kinda abstract concept. Elliott Smith talked about it in a song writing tutorial. Musical sequences.

    • @chrissteiger4199
      @chrissteiger4199 2 роки тому +2

      Pyramid strings are the same sound that plays very subtly during pyramid song. I recognize it from the actual song. Also of you listen to any of their most recent performances of pyramid song live johnny Greenwood plays the pyramid strings on his guitar with a violin bow.. It's a pretty interesting effect.

    I curated a playlist, on Spotify, that contains everything from this era. I don't know if I can post a Spotify link here, but you can look it up if you want. It's called "Radiohead - Kid A/mnesiac". It has 41 songs, and I took a lot of time putting it together; more than a year, in anticipation of a 20th anniversary of Kid A and Amnesiac. It's also available on UA-cam.

Alt Fast to me sounds like a full on horrifying nightmare, again scary but still a really cool track. All the untitled tracks are neat too, I love em. Follow Me Around was written during the OK Computer tour. It was played sparsely on and off until about 2003 I think? Anyways, on the Meeting People is Easy documentary, you see the band jamming to this song, with drums, bass and all that jazz. It's such a great version, that IMO, should have been released close to that. But hey, I'm not Radiohead.
