I feel like year zero is the second part of a triad made up by with teeth, year zero and the slip. If you listen to them in release order they feel congruent and episodic in a 3 act story. Start middle and end. I often listen to them in that way or splice them together it's amazing, one of my favourite slices is the line begins to blur - in this twilight - beside you in time - zero sum. These four tracks together are trippy.
Sunspots (and With Teeth, in general) didn't grab me at first, but it eventually "hit me" and man, it's one of my favorites today. Also glad to see Hesitation Marks get some love. It's very overlooked and also kind of gets under your skin on repeated listens.
I had the same experience with hesitation marks. First listen didn’t grab me. But I played it while working out and mowing. Then all the songs got better and better each listen.
With Teeth hit me the first time I listened to it all the way through. Hesitation Marks and Year Zero both had to grow on me, but now I love them both.
A lot of people rank Hesitation Marks as an album pretty low on their lists. I don't think there's a bad song on the album. To me it's probably my favorite thing Trent has done post The Fragile. Glad to see some songs gets some love here.
All Time Low is so GOOD!!! I've only recently started the NIN deep dive and my favorite records so far are definitely The Downward Spiral, Pretty Hate Machine, and Hesitation Marks (and Broken). So I was kind of shocked to find NIN fans generally don't care for Hesitation Marks. To my ears it retains that really unsettling character and creepiness of the earlier records but feels a little more grown up and laid back. Other favorite track from Hesitation Marks is Satellite (that slightly "off" note that mimics a beeping satellite in the chorus is just so sick!)
All Time Closer - let's hear it! These are great choices. And damn that last piano addition to me I'm not is something I'd love to hear more of, how cool.
I knew you’d approve of this list. How many conversations have we had about Even Deeper, Deep, The Only Time (Say WHAT?), Sunspots (Blender!)… good list. ixi - can’t wait to hear you discuss God Given. MillionMiAway and I both think that’s YZ’s strongest track. Actually, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the whole YZ ARG, if you have any recollection of that crazy time!
@@iximusic Please listen to "Underneath It All" in the The Fragile album. Its one of my fav tracks from Trent Reznor, I jam to it every time im having a good day. Plus to me its underrated maybe listen to Complication + Pilgrimage! (Keep up the amazing content tho!) :)
So many great tracks here. When I listen to "Me, I'm not" I can't help to start thinking of Depeche Mode's "Home", they have a similar drum groove and bass in my head.
Yesss to all of these. Even Deeper was utterly jaw-dropping live during the Tension tour, with Lisa Fischer & Sharlotte Gibson on backing vocals adding some of that trippy harmonic texture in the bridge. Just gorgeous.
Even deeper's my personal favorite track by Reznor. Catches up so much feelings in a simple manner. This song sums up a strange mood, between despair, indifference, dryness and beauty. This is aridity made up in a song. I see beautiful desertic sunny landscapes, smell of the naked blue sky, sun both crushing and warming.
YES!! I completely agree with the top 3. When I first heard Corona Radiata, it made me feel really relaxed and at peace. I’ve always loved Even Deeper as well.
Love the groove of Me, I'm not! Sunspots was one of my favorite tracks on that album. Actually I dig that streaking instrument that comes over that last part of the song. Even Deeper is so haunting!
Corona Radiata! Fucking hell, yeah! This song is fucking amazing, especially listened to at 11. The best track on The Slip and the main reason people are missing out when they forget that album. P.S. I could easily listen to you play along on the piano to the entirety of this track.
Miss Ixi. Agreed on Hesitation Marks. So thank you for the propers for In Two. So intricate, so heavy. Reznor collaborating with Lisa Fischer + Sharlotte Gibson at the last minute was a masterstroke, the harmonies on ‘Various’ were gorgeous and that howl on ‘Even Deeper’ stunned. I loved that ambient funk version of NIN. Thank you for your deconstructions! 🤘🙀
I mentioned Sunspots in the part 1 to this video, and I'm very happy to see it featured here! Now I need to shout out another underrated NIN song you still haven't brought up: "I Would For You" from Hesitation Remarks is fantastic!
I love the way they snuck that awesome synth line from The Only Time into some live versions of Closer. It starts around 2:50 in this version from BYIT: ua-cam.com/video/6Q2lkd0fjO8/v-deo.html
I remember being surprised the first time you said this - and then I remember when I realized you were not crazy, but rather a genius - and I haven't questioned your rationale since that day.
all time low is one of my fave songs from hesitation marks soley 'cause of the fact that it was the only song that made me think, ''if this was personified i would absolutely go out with it''
wow cool yes I notice there are many songwriting skills involved in NINs texture-driven songs. Sometimes it's just weird scales over each other that make these other-worldly moods. You have a very charming way of talking passionately about music, reminding me of a jewish friend. And you play the piano extremely lovely!
I maintain that All Time Low is in the running for best NIN song. And Corona Radiata clicked for me when I was travelling on a long night flight and couldn't sleep. I absolutely love it.
thank you for showing "The Only Time" some love! the lead synth from that track always stays in my head for days after I listen to it, its so good. OH and all time low? one of my favourite NIN tracks as well! lol
I remember when MTV2 still played music and at the time, Year Zero had first come out. MTV2 was playing snippets of songs from the album and one that I remembered was Me, I'm Not. One of my favorite tracks from one of my all time favorite bands of all time.
Home was weird to me the first time I heard it. I enjoy it even more now that I've listen to you play piano on it. RELEASE AN ALBUM!!!!!!!!!!!! xxxx ;)
Absolutely loved these videos, super insightful and you're a great host! Also, big shout out for including something from Hesitation Marks - such an unbelievably overlooked album :D
All great tracks. Sunspots is one of my favorite under the radar songs, but 'The Good Soldier' is the most underrated NIN song of all time. It didn't even get a track on Year Zero Remixed. The final crescendo is just so damn good.
That crescendo when all the instruments come together is perfection. It sounds like even a xylophone is added giving an innocence. For me Year zero always begins with the good soldier
Yay for Hesitation Marks and Year Zero 🖤🖤'All time low' is 100% pure genius - I can never get enough of that track. 'Me - I'm not' is stellar. I'd never heard of 'Deep' before - thanks for sharing!
I've recently discovered your channel and love your content! Do you have any plans to review any more Year Zero tracks? It's one of my favourite NIN albums, and I think probably due a follow up album!
The Idea Of You is so good, it's like March of the Pigs and I Do Not Want This had a baby. Shouldn't work, but it does. Re: Sunspots -- maybe I'm just hearing things after all this TDS analysis and the mention of "nothing can stop me now" being recontextualized as a positive thing, but now I'm hearing the chorus bassline as a funky happy version of the TDS theme. You could play it over that, if the 4th note was changed... Sounds super chill and jazzy in my head
I just recently listened to Ghosts V. I remember getting chills at the opening of Your Touch. It kind of reminded me of some the things I love about This Isn't The Place.
corona radiata feels like the last thing REGAL cinemas used to play before the movie started. This comforting but heavy ambience while showing you popcorn and a coke in space and instructing you to silence ur phones. It would always last just slightly too long, probably for them to switch reels
I have ALWAYS loved Even Deeper ever since I heard it on the Vevo concert back in jan 2019, always regarded it as a top 10 NIN song, then I saw them do it live at Brixton and it just solidified an already very strong love. Alan Moulder was in the audience too
Dr. Dre is credited with "Mixing Assistance" on Even Deeper. If I recall correctly from a TV interview or something I once read, Dre visited the studio while Reznor was working on The Fragile, and was astounded by how many tracks Reznor used when mixing his songs, like more than a hundred tracks. And so Reznor asked him to help with mixing this song to strip it down a bit, and maybe he had something to do with the beat, which does have a hip-hop vibe to it. This might be apocryphal, it's just something I remember from around the time when it released. But Dre is definitely credited on this track, so I don't think it's farfetched. Great picks in this video, and killer performing, thanks ixi!
Me, I’m Not…..just a great jam! And then I can’t say enough about ‘All Time Low’. Saw the Hesitation Marks Tour and he had a few soulful backup female singers that provide an amazing harmony!
I love how All Time Low is produced. The guitar notes in the verse alternating between the left and right speakers with Trent's voice in the center sound so chaotic and funky, then the chorus calms you back down.
The chimes at the end of “all time low” is a sample from Final Fantasy 1 for the NES system. It was a great Easter egg for me, seeing how I was playing this game around the time I got into Pretty Hate Machine.
Love your videos as usual. Along with The Perfect Drug, Sunspots was one of the first NIN songs I loved when getting into them for the first time. I got into NIN with With Teeth. From there I have got all their albums/eps and have been a huge fan since. :)
@ixi You're so hitting home with all these tracks, but starting the list with Home exactly 20 years after meeting my twin soul, to whom I deeply connect this song, hits me personally, even deeper! 🤟😘
It's funny, I wasn't thinking of Leaving Hope as underrated because it's the fandom's FAVORITE SONG but you're right in that it is unknown by the mainstream and probably quite a few fans. Good one.
I had never listened to that Home track. Thanks for the tip!
3 роки тому+1
the song I remember the most from when I saw NIN back in 2006 was Even Deeper. Its one of my all-time fav tracks, but watching it played live was very powerful.
I’ve just recently found your channel, and let me just say you’re awesome! I’m also a NIN super fan and it’s so cool seeing all of your insightful and thoughtful analysis of Trent’s music. Keep up the great work!
I'll try. Fun/challenging thing though, All Time Low's verse and chorus are in slightly different tempos, so it's really hard to line things up with another song. I wonder how that happened!
yes you can say that! it sounds beautiful on the piano. i never thought of the melody outside the synth. barebones, this is amazing!! this ones going in my endorphines playlist. so cool that someone else reasonates (prob higher) with you with nin
also re: the familiar buzz on buzz on the slip. i always thought it was an instrument slowed down like 1000%. its interesting to learn about overtones: i just got introduced to whole tunes in 2020. intrigued to learn if theres any relation.
I noticed during nin tension the video nin uploaded to their channel near the end of sanctified you can hear that same synth in sunspots but in higher pitch check it out
The most recent triptych of releases is the one that's still giving me trouble really getting into them. But you've given me reason to dive in and finally fall in love :)
Here are my favorites from the trilogy - might be a good place to start: Add Violence - The Lovers, This Isn't The Place Not The Actual Events - The Idea Of You, Dear World, Bad Witch - Over & Out
@@iximusic I will pay special attention to these! "The Lovers" is one I immediately connected with. Kind of heartbreaking to hear Trent in the Song Exploder episode say about it, "Yeah I think I could have gone the rest of my life without going back to the place I did to write those lyrics" 😢
@@kaicanyonellis I just recently listened to that podcast episode and it gave me goosebumps. He so rarely explains what his lyrics are about but when he does, it's hair-raising.
@@makeupartistrybyliz agree! Goosebumps that whole episode. I've heard him say tons about his approach to songwriting or his production choices, but almost never anything about the lyrics.
the The Only Time synth lead, probably one of the first sounds i tried to emulate with my microKORG, it's impossible to imitate, but with any "percussive FM patch that sounds piano" to get that "ta tada weeyou" feel you have 1/ to play with the pitch bend wheel OR 2/ to program the slide between notes to be legato, which means to be activated only when you play the sliding note when the last one is still pressed. i have been obsessed with the percussive pianos of "Down In It", "Terrible Lie", "That's What I Get" and "The Only Time" they are the sound of "Pretty Hate Machine" to me...
Year Zero is very underrated as a whole
agreed 💯
Totally! Found it while I was in Iraq in 2010 and was blown away.
THANK YOU. Yes. 👍
I feel like year zero is the second part of a triad made up by with teeth, year zero and the slip. If you listen to them in release order they feel congruent and episodic in a 3 act story. I often listen to them in that way or splice them together it's amazing, one of my favourite slices is the line begins to blur - in this twilight - beside you in time - zero sum. All time low is literally one of my favorite NIN songs. That outro is the best thing ever
Agreed! That album as a whole is super cool! Definitely the best track on it
I actually kinda hate it :-/
but glad you got something out of it
So glad you mentioned Corona Radiata. One of the best ambient pieces of music I’ve ever heard.
Sunspots (and With Teeth, in general) didn't grab me at first, but it eventually "hit me" and man, it's one of my favorites today. Also glad to see Hesitation Marks get some love. It's very overlooked and also kind of gets under your skin on repeated listens.
Hell yeah.
Absolutely my top 5 tracks off that record without a doubt.

A lot of people rank Hesitation Marks as an album pretty low on their lists. I don't think there's a bad song on the album. To me it's probably my favorite thing Trent has done post The Fragile. Glad to see some songs gets some love here.
Whenever I say I prefer Hesitation Marks to Year Zero, people get shocked, to say the least.
I'm not a huge HM fan but it has I Would For You, which is up there with my favourite post-The Fragile NIN songs for sure.
Fun fact - Dr Dre worked as assistant mixer / producer on Even Deeper. You can find photos of it online!
Yeah, I can hear Dr. Dre in the beats.
All Time Low is so GOOD!!! I've only recently started the NIN deep dive and my favorite records so far are definitely The Downward Spiral, Pretty Hate Machine, and Hesitation Marks (and Broken). Well said… except for satellite 🛰 I can’t get into it.
The Only Time has some hilarious lyrics too. Maybe Just Once is a great tune from this era that's 80sfied to all hell but I love it. Great list!!
All Time Closer - let's hear it! These are great choices. And damn that last piano addition to me I'm not is something I'd love to hear more of, how cool.

Even Deeper was utterly jaw-dropping live during the Tension tour, with Lisa Fischer & Sharlotte Gibson on backing vocals adding some of that trippy harmonic texture in the bridge. Just gorgeous.
They added so much depth to the set. In particular, Even Deeper got a seemed to have hints of a Pink Floyd - Great Gig in the Sky kinda vibe.

This made me so happy! EVEN DEEPER is one of my favorite NIN tracks. So glad to see it getting some love! :D
oh my god yes you 'GET' it. Seriously some of the best moments in their catalog and they're so overlooked
Also, 10/10 would listen to videos of you playing piano along with the actual NIN tracks

haha demon cats. Good description!
Pino’s bass for All Time Low is *chef’s kiss
All NIN tracks deserve an even deeper listen. NIN is life. :)
The Fragile overall is full of so many unique songs, always will be my favorite period in his music.
I was privileged enough to be present for the live debut of Sunspots at the Brixton Academy in London back in June
I love the way they snuck that awesome synth line from The Only Time into some live versions of Closer. It starts around 2:50 in this version from BYIT: ua-cam.com/video/6Q2lkd0fjO8/v-deo.html

all time low is one of my fave songs from hesitation marks soley 'cause of the fact that it was the only song that made me think, ''if this was personified i would absolutely go out with it''
even if like. it would probably be fucked up due to how the song sounds and the subject matter
LOVING this series!
i love the paper towel dispenser solo in sunspots
sunspots is one of my favourite nin songs im glad you gave it some love

This video needs to be renamed to: Songs I absolutely love!
Your Touch and I Would For You are the most underrated NIИ songs in my opinion.
I just recently listened to Ghosts V. I remember getting chills at the opening of Your Touch. It kind of reminded me of some the things I love about This Isn't The Place.
@@iximusic I absolutely love it, the whole song gives me chills. This and Leaving Hope are the saddest NIИ songs in my opinion.
Tfw half of the songs on this list are already some of my favorites or ones I was planning to listen to after this
corona radiata feels like the last thing REGAL cinemas used to play before the movie started. This comforting but heavy ambience while showing you popcorn and a coke in space and instructing you to silence ur phones. It would always last just slightly too long, probably for them to switch reels
I really did not know the majority of these songs even existed I'll definitely have to dig deeper thanks for sharing 🥂🖖🎶🎵🐢🐢🐢
Thanks for giving Sunspots and The only time the credits they deserve
I have ALWAYS loved Even Deeper ever since I heard it on the Vevo concert back in jan 2019, always regarded it as a top 10 NIN song, then I saw them do it live at Brixton and it just solidified an already very strong love. Alan Moulder was in the audience too
They played it at Red Rocks! I nearly cried.
Dr. Dre is credited with "Mixing Assistance" on Even Deeper. I saw that, wasn't sure what it all meant. Maybe there's an interview kicking around somewhere.
God I love Sunspots. Thanks for highlighting it 👍
Omg Sunspots, so underated . Great choice ❤️
Me, I’m Not…..just a great jam! And then I can’t say enough about ‘All Time Low’. Saw the Hesitation Marks Tour and he had a few soulful backup female singers that provide an amazing harmony!
I was lucky enough to see that tour a couple times and the backup singers were a highlight, totally agree!
There is an Austin City Limits recording from this tour that is outstanding, and All Time Low is definitely one if the highlights of the performance!
Corona Radiata……whoa, deep cut. Nice
Another great list. I actually didn't know about Home!!
Oh goodie. More ixi on nin. Great selection.🤩
The Only Time has been played mixed into Closer live on several occasions and it is absolutely amazing, would recommend! Great vid, keep them up!
Corona Radiata always stirs images of space
I love how All Time Low is produced. The guitar notes in the verse alternating between the left and right speakers with Trent's voice in the center sound so chaotic and funky, then the chorus calms you back down.
Dear Ixi, whom I love,

Every track on Year Zero is awesome.

@@claymccoy I completely agree.
Me, I’m Not is so freakin badass. Really hits that drone-ish hypnotic spot. Love it.

@@iximusic Would love to see you break it down, its such a moving and emotional song.
Leaving Hope and The Persistence of Loss back-to-back on the album are some of the finest instrumental songs I’ve ever heard

The back half of The Slip doesn't get much love. Glad to see a bit of a spotlight shone on it!

The most recent triptych of releases is the one that's still giving me trouble really getting into them. But you've given me reason to dive in and finally fall in love :)
Here are my favorites from the trilogy - might be a good place to start:
Add Violence - The Lovers, This Isn't The Place
Not The Actual Events - The Idea Of You, Dear World,
Bad Witch - Over & Out
@@iximusic I will pay special attention to these!
Kai and Liz, I listened to that episode when it came out and don't remember him talking about the lyrics 😬 I will correct that
the The Only Time synth lead, probably one of the first sounds i tried to emulate with my microKORG, it's impossible to imitate, but with any "percussive FM patch that sounds piano" to get that "ta tada weeyou" feel you have 1/ to play with the pitch bend wheel OR 2/ to program the slide between notes to be legato, which means to be activated only when you play the sliding note when the last one is still pressed.
i have been obsessed with the percussive pianos of "Down In It", "Terrible Lie", "That's What I Get" and "The Only Time" they are the sound of "Pretty Hate Machine" to me...
HAHAHAH i have been on a severe PHM kick. thank you for the intro!
I discovered 2 new NIN songs today! Thank you, Ixi!
