I was crushed when his career fizzled out. I loved watching him pitch for the Marlins, and when my Tigers were able to snag him and Miggy from the Marlins, I thought they would be the cornerstones for championship teams. What really sucks is that he wasn't someone with a lot of potential that wasn't lived up to; he made it to the top. He started his third game with an ERA of ZERO and a batting average of (get this...) 1.000...!!! You knew THAT couldn't last...!!! He always looked like he was having fun there on the mound. Perhaps he didn't take himself so seriously.
The opposite happened I think. Tigers tried making him cut down on the wind up and I think it messed with his normal groove. But the anxiety was the main cause.
Before the video starts I always thought it was pretty simple: dontrelle sucked with people on base. He couldn't do his big funky windup so he prolly lost some velo + movement, so over time when it rained it poured (more ppl on base = more bad dontrelle = more hits/runs = more ppl on base = more hits/runs and so on + so forth)

I personally think he got the yips and couldn't find the strike zone anymore it happens. When he got traded to Detroit is when shit hit the fan, they should of made him a DH or 1st base. Even as a kid his power was unbelievable, seeing some of the homeruns he hit in little leauge and high school were awsome. A particular one I remember was in little leauge. He hit what he thought was a routine popup, put the bat down and started to slow jog to first. Where we played little leauge one field had 3 rows of fences, one was the hr fence, then a 2nd fence about 20 feet behind it, a trail behind that fence fowlled by a wooden fence that protects house. It cleared all the fences and went into the neighborhood. I remember being 8 or 9 and thinking damn. The lemon fights we used to have were fantastic. The street we lived on had about 8 lemon trees right around us. So a lemon fight is pretty much throw lemons at each other, we used to have them in summer when kids could actually be outside at 10pm causing a ruckus like they should. Most of the time it would be teams of 3v3. You know what sucks if he wasent on your team, at age 11-14 he was throwing easily 75-85mph. If he hit you with one let's just say it was unpleasant. If I remember correctly, most of the pitching experts said that D Willis was lifting too much weight and his new massive arms threw his aim off. Who knows if that was true or not.
Dontrelle Willis declined because his managers ran his arm into the ground through overuse, as they did to a bunch of other young starting pitchers (Mark Prior is a notable example from the same era). I appreciate your use of advanced metrics to discuss Willis's decline but the conversation around him pretty much begins and ends with the fact that he was consistently throwing 115+ pitches a game with a high-stress delivery and while his elbow may not have snapped his arm was just absolutely killed.
I honestly think when he broke in that his delivery shook hitters. Somewhere down the line everyone realized " hey this guy's stuff isn't even that good. "
Dontrelle also got caught using roids. Once he got caught I believe his stats began to decline. Part of it may have been physical, but if the anxiety/depression was real that could have been his mental crutch. Sad to see him go so fast
In my opinion, Dontrelle's success during his early years with the Marlins was attributed to 2 things. 1) He had a great defense behind him which covered a lot of his mistakes. Up the middle, you had Luis Castillo at 2B, Alex Gonzalez at Short and Juan Pierre at CF. Castillo was a golden glover and Gonzalez & Pierre were very good. And on the corners, you had Mike Lowell at 3B and Derek Lee 1B who both golden glovers, and I'm not even including Ivan Rodriguez because he was there for one season. 2) His funky delivery threw off a lot of hitters early on until they figured him out. Also, his delivery probably contributed to his lack of control because it was a motion that difficult to repeat with consistency in the long run.
King Felix won't get into the Hall of Fame. He was a dominant pitcher for a few seasons but has a relatively low number of wins compared to other HoF pitchers.
