So interesting..After 1000s of downward dogs I now realise it was making my bulging disc worse ...so much of yoga class I have to skip now ...pilates seems more suitable at mo ..thank you for these videos so helpful😊

Most of these are demonstrations of extremely improper form, particularly what he's calling "triangle ", happy baby, and downward dog. Having said that, I agree that so many people do these poses improperly, and shouldn't be doing yoga if they have disc issues.

Hi. Downward dog is not about flexing the spine, on the contrary, when correcly done, it implies an axial extension of the spine which is beneficial for gaining space between vertebraes. On the other hand, although classic posture implies stretching the legs (and thus, the hamstring, it is possible to do a variation with bent knees. Thank you for your content, I find it very valuable, clear and enjoyable.

Yes, I agree. The downward dog shoud not be streching the lower back, but very rarely people do it so correct way that it does not cause a problem. Most likely those are not people who suffer from bulging disks who do it right 😁

I’ve done yoga for 20yrs with a Wheel of Yoga qualified instructor. Had a break from it due to non fault RTC 10 yrs ago that left me with sciatica & bulging & torn discs. I returned to yoga after improving my fitness through walking, Reformer Pilates & swimming. I listen to my body & my instructor ensures I am doing the posture’s correctly. I find the correct downward dog & triangle postures help with my lower back pain & tightness in back, pelvis & leg muscles. When these muscles are tight my pain is much worse. It’s important to have a qualified yoga instructor who will ensure you are doing the postures correctly, will warn you of postures to avoid & for you to listen to your body & not push yourself. I’ve learned to live with chronic pain that it’s important to keep fit, flexible & at the correct weight with a healthy anti inflammatory diet.

What he said all correct. Those poses, especially forward bending and downward facing dog make my bulging disc worse.

... I have been doing all of these after seeing them and similar stretches recommended on websites for low back pain (before I knew I had a bulging disc). Glad I found your video 😅

Sorry, but the triangle pose you are demonstrating is not correct , You should align the upper body over the lower body like in-between 2 sheets of glass its better to bring the hand behind the leg / also using a block is beneficial if needed .

Makes total sense in theory but Im a little confused now because when I have sciatica and fold/ bend forward it goes away immediately

Thank you so much for making this video! Although I’ve always strayed away from forward folds as they’ve always made my back pain worse, I have been doing most of the hamstring stretching poses thinking it will eventually help my back. I had also been using downward dog as a resting posture doing several of them during a sequence 😢Now I know it was the worse thing to do to my back. My body had been telling me that but I just didn’t realize.

Cues for Happy Baby are knees bent & towards the armpits with soles of the feet towards the ceiling and the low back is flat

So IF these poses alleviate the pain it is GOOD for me? All these poses feel great HOWEVER as the day goes on the pain gets worse. I’ve had back surgery but the disc damaged my sciatic nerve, I have neuropathy. What poses should I be trying?

As others have said, some of these demos are a little 'old school'. Eg, you do not need to keep your legs straight in a forward fold, seated or standing. Having a slight bend in the knees is fine. In a seated forward fold, you could also put something like a rolled blanket or towel, behind the back of the knees for support. Downward dog - there shouldn't be too much spinal flexion there, it's about lengthening the spine, not flexing. And again, keep a slight bend in the knees, and heels off the floor, to start with, or generally, if this is better for your hamstrings...Yoga should always be about what works for the individual, and their body. So pretty much all poses can be adapted to work for you. All that said, there are plenty of other poses to choose from, if these are avoided. Just always remember to listen to your body ! 🙏

Hi. I’m not a doctor, but I think it depends on how each of us heals. I’ve been suffering since the end of April and had 2 rounds of epidurals. It’s still agitated. Also, could depend on the protrusion. (My L4L5 is out 8mm.)

Yoga teacher here. Poses are poorly done but, that’s the problem, as a yoga teacher you don’t get to adjust every student so there will be many who will get injured.
