- Erik From Farpoint Farms Show off his vintage 1974 Volkswagen Super Beetle. Not many of these cars are still on the road, but this one has been maintained and is still ready to roll!
This was my first car. It had shaved bumpers with lights on the front. I had impy rims. And surf racks. Only push bars no bumpers. I threw a rod put too much oil one surf trip. I had a high school Keg party and replaced the engine from Dutch in Belflower ca. sold it the next owner made it a Baja bug.
Had a 74 Super Beetle in high school through college ‘78-83....also customized it with Porsche Fuchs style wheel covers, header type exhaust, bigger carb and stronger clutch. Was actually able to lay rubber with that little thing......and of course it had an 8-track tape player. Sold in my senior year of college and bought an 1980 Audi 4000 5+5....felt like I was in a Mercedes after 5 years in a Beetle.
Very cool!
This reminds me of my first car, a bright yellow 74 Super Beetle! I had 8-spoke rims painted to match the car with knock-offs. I had one piece windows, racing seats, small three spoke steering wheel, and a short t-bar shifter. I had the front end lowered and quiet pack dual exhaust. Since this was the late 80s I had a wonderful tape deck with 6-inch door speakers and two 6x9 speakers in a custom deck behind the rear seat. I was rocking the California look VW in Austin, TX 1987-89!!
The late 80's and early 90's were the best time for air cooled cars. The were everywhere, they were cheap, and parts to make them look cool were cheap too!
Hello, I just acquired my dads 74 super beetle that we restored back in 86, it's been in the barn since 2010. it has the crank sunroof as well. We put spacers in the coils to lift it a little and then put spacers on the drums to kick out the rims a bit. We used 83 camaro 14" rims and 205/70/14 tires. looks sweet. we also replaced entire floor pan and added ford escort bucket seats. It also has a rare automatic stick shift, no clutch pedal. My question to you is this...What disc brake system did you go with, that is the first thing I will be doing with it is upgrading the brakes. You are not kidding that the brakes suck on these, I remember driving it in the early 90s and I thought i was going to put my foot through the floor a couple times. Even with the bigger tires it would squeal in reverse. I am pretty excited to get it road ready again!!
Thanks Eric, I have a 1973 'L' Bug here in Australia. Gotta love a 'Dak Dak' :)
in Australia they were called the Volkswagen "L" and had front disc brakes.
Funny, I just bought an orange 72 with almost everything IDENTICAL to this one. Same rims, same wheel, almost same stereo. Must have been the same previous owner. I had a 69 Corona I restored as a kid lol.
That’s funny about the cavalier I had a guy give me a 1985 I believe it was. It was a 2 door cavalier it had a four-speed manual in the tech for four-cylinder they said it couldn’t be fixed. He said he had replaced some of the ignition components and the throttlebody twice and could not get it to run right. I put the throttlebody back together then I got my cordless drill and a big step bit I drilled a big hole in the catalytic converter and drove it home LOL the only thing wrong with it was a stopped up converter. I replace the converter with a Straight pipe into the stock muffler in that car ran great. It was actually a decent looking car being that it was a two door and it was kind of fun to drive being it was a manual and it was pretty peppy. I peddled around with it for about a year it was a pretty decent looking car all original. My uncle offered me 900 bucks for it he drove it back-and-forth to work for years and he loved it.
Man, if I had $7500 I'd hit you up on it yesterday. I had a '74 Superbeetle, white w/black trim and it was by far my favorite car. Hoping to pick one up soon. thanks for sharing your story
where is this yellow beetle located? The price is good for me.
my name is Dan Szmolke . i'm from buffalo, n.y.
Do you remember the tire sizes? It looks super cool with the big rears and tiny fronts!
that's pretty nice. mine is a red 74 1303 right-hand drive with a sunroof/moonroof. i'm looking to get it restored right now. i know more about computers than cars so i'll be taking it to a vw specialist around seattle-tacoma area.
Just got a 74super. Paid $240.00 for it with 63k original miles. I'm the 2nd owner and it has title and all service reports, and manuals
My 74 had AC and fuel injection.
Here in the states we didn't get Fuel injection until 75 and it was a terrible version of it. I wish they had used the CIS fuel injection system the Rabbits got. That little beetle would have NEVER had any drive ability issues!
Thanks for sharing this one. I've owned four bugs; a '66, '69, '71 Super Beetle and a '74 Super Beetle. My fave was the '74. You mentioned the HP being 46 but, I seem to remember it being 65 HP. Maybe I'm wrong. That's a clean car man. You really don't seem many of them nowadays. My only gripe was the 3.000 mile valve check/adjustment. #,000 ticks off fast. LOL I enjoy you channel too. Interesting content. All the best...........
Hey! I know this is a late reply but...May I ask why was the '74 your favourite?
Charlie Zellner :my ‘74 SB had stock 48 hp. I added power accessories then prolly got 60 hp
Charlie Zellner they were probably about 60hp gross. But hp ratings in the USA changed in 73 to gross rating (at the wheels). 73-4 were rated at 46hp as a result. 75-9 fuelninjected models were rated at 48.
No antifreeze.
You make good points. I like your Carl and your style. Peace Eric.
Beautiful car Eric. I named our cat Karl. I agree on restoring some of the oddball cars. I used to have a 1997 Chrysler LHS. I would like to have another one in mint condition. Good video.
Nice Bug. what size tires do you have in there?
Great tour of your super beetle, thx.
I have a 74 beetle I'm looking at does it have a cigarette lighter?
That was a sweet looking super bug
I love the beetles, new cars today, just don't seem to have the same appeal as older ones.
@@FarpointFarms agreed
Is Karl still for sale, and where is it located? We’ve had some air cooled V-dubs. Super Beatle and a bus.
I'm sorry but Carl was sold last summer. What a great car though. I still miss it. Now I have my 88 Yugo GV, and it's almost time to part ways with it as well.
Next I'm thinking about a VW bus or a VW Rabbit truck.
Hello, I'm thinking of buying this type of car, will it be my first car you recommend it?
If you want to learn to work on cars then yes!! They are simple, durable cars, but they are nearly 50 years old. Stuff will break. That said, go for it!!
I recommend to get a safer car to drive. In my first year of driving I had already gotten into an accident (someone rear ended me) but it probably wouldn't have happened if I had more experience of braking better. The old bugs have no safety at all some call them death traps. So I would wait until you have good experience driving then you should get a classic bug.
Pretty dang cool man. I had a 71(400$) and a 73(700$) bought in 89 and 93 respectively. At the time I had a MTN. bike that cost more than both combined. Ha ha. Still very typical of Coloradans to roll like that. I don't think I could even come close to them for that now. I kick myself for selling them. Did I mention that my father in law lives there in the Hilton Head area? Better he is there than here.
Right on. I remember those days of $100 beetles and $200 hippy buses. Try and find ANY running car of any make or model for that kind of money now. My how things have changed.....
Gitar Zan
my dad is giving me his 74 super beetle tomrrow
Is this car already sold? If not are you still considering selling Carl?
Any help for a 6’3 guy, trying to figure out how to slide seat back further
I'm 6'2, but I never needed to roll it back father. Maybe look at aftermarket seats?
Love it. Great job.
I had s 74 Super beetle, painted it silver and added aftermarket (fake) Porsche Fuch’s wheel covers...and larger 2bbl carb snd clutch and custom exhsust. Looked sharp
Loved this car!
You got a beauty there...I don’t think I had the vertical bumper sections on mine though...is that custom?
Did you ever sell this? It's beautiful.
I did sell it, but I get updates about it from the new owner a few times a year.
Did you replace the front seats from another car or is it custom made for the car?
Yes, These are aftermarket seats. Very nicely made, but I can't remember the company.
Wish I could have sold you my 67 convertible. Among a couple others
I’ve got one I need to restore with 68,000 original miles
Hey Eric Long time no talk buddy see you have been busy Well I just got my Ham License Technician Class Now going for my General License wish me luck on test you should still do some more CB radio Videos when you got time . Aloha from Hawaii
I'm working on 2 right now!
Cool keep up the good work Talk about skip and Propagation OK
Love it. Did you sell it yet?
Yes, but i get updates from the new owner. He has brought it nearly all the way back to stock and it looks great!
😍
Let me know if car is for sale nice.
It sold last year. Sorry!
What a great Super Beetle, thanks for sharing.
Did it have a fire?
No. I replaced all the fuel lines and fuel filter to make sure it didn't!
I want to buy one but my question is, is it hard to find car parts for the 74 beetle! Thx
The 73 and 74 super beetles are a little harder to find parts for, but in general there are still a lot of new old stock parts around for them.
engine sounds good
She was a great car. I miss this little bug just about every day.
I had a orange one I bought new back in the day...drove it from Atlanta to SanFrancisco and back. Of course no A.C. Hot as hell going across the desert..But who needs A.C. if you have a good 8 track
I like Carl the Beetle
That was one great Beetle.
+ 1 for Toyota Corona
Not impressed.
What, when you look in the mirror?
@@FarpointFarms probably what his wife says every time he drops his pants. 😂🤪
