- Here are three dances from John Playfords "The English Dancing Master" (first edition). We have (in order of playing):
Kettle Drum
Nonsuch
Goddesses
Kettle Drum
Information about the instrument:
The Moraharpa is a keyed fiddle that was found in Mora Sweden - carbon dated to the early 1500s, with an inscription of 1525 on it. However, while the wood was carbon dated to have been cut in the early 1500's, experts think that this was actually made in the 1600's as a folk version of the instrument pictured in Praetorius' treatise of 1618. Further howevers, there is iconography in the form of church paintings, and stone scultpure that dates the use of keyed fiddles that look like just this as early as 1350.
This Moraharp was made by Michael Mirkwied Stibane , (with a minor modification to the keys by myself to match the look of the early keyed fiddles, and for greater ease of play... Michael's original key ends can be seen on those keys without keycaps as a small wooden stub).

Are you my future self?? We look insanely alike! Wonderful instrumentation too!
Fantastic!!!
great
Hi! great vid! isn't the tuning for moraharpa normally "G3 - D3 (drone) - d4" ? why yours is Gdg?
Hello, thank you! :)
I wanted mine to be played in the key of G with a GD drone. So the middle string is the lowest drone note at G. The string that is keyed is the G an octave above. And the final string on the other side of the middle string, is at the D between those two notes. Technically it's more of a DGg rather than a Gdg.
Because of the lack of information about the instrument illustrated by Praetorius, and the original that was found that looked similar, we don't knwo the actual tuning of the moraharpa. And also, I wanted mine to have a brighter sound.
Hope this helps!
Well played ;) Can i have a question who made this instrument? I'm going to buy moraharpa and i'm looking for a good luthier
Indeed I will tell you! He has made far better models than even this one now! You can find Michael Stibane on youtube here: www.youtube.com/@mstibs1/videos
What is the tuning of your moraharpa
