Malo: Latin Bugaloo (recollections) [Part I: Brothers in Music]

  • About a decade ago, an attempt was made to tell the story of Latin Rock group Malo.
A formidable force boasting over 30 musicians during the course of their first four albums.
Initially, some key interviews were made before the project fell through.
Rather then have interviews collect dust in an archive never to be seen again, you can hear various recollections spliced together for your enjoyment.
Digging into boxes and grabbing a few things from the net, you can hear these legends sharing views of the past.
The working title was "Xochipilli's Dream"...bit of a tongue twister, and probably would have changed, but that's what you find when you dust things off.
Part 1 features vocalist Arcelio Garcia Jr., bassist Pablo Tellez, and guitarist Abel Zarate.

This is great what a shame this wasn't aired on PBS as I recall a special that was aired about Mexican American bands in the 60's and 70's.

Arcelio García, Pablo Tellez and Abel Zarate, I didn't know how important and great these three were for Malo.

How Intresting my musical brothers Arcelio, Pablo and Able would not even mention my name. Before Arcelio, Pablo and Abel there was The Malibus. With Marty, Jim Salinas and Myself. We all have stories to tell, I have yet to tell mine. Let's not forget who wrote "Suavecito" the song that made Malo...

Hey Richard. In my humble opinion, you are Malo , and nobody can deny without your song "Sauvicito" Malo may not have made it on the musical Map.

We love being a part of the Rock/Latin music world! Malo was a forefather of what we do along with Santana but we add our East Coast vibe and rock quite a bit harder at times. Thanks to Jorge Santana who became a friend only a about 6 years ago, RIP. He was interested in doing a show with us and Tito Puente Jr but it did not happen. We discussed this at the Latin Hall Of Fame Awards in Miami back in 2016. We continue and thank all the bands/musicians and especially fans that support similar bands!

The merger of The Malibus with Naked Lunch provided the nucleus for MALO. However, without composer and lead vocalist Richard Bean writing “SUAVECITO” Jorge Santana and Malo would not have been put on the musical map. Indeed, “SUAVECITO” has become the National Chicago Anthem! VIVA Richard Bean & MALO RIP Jorge Santana & Arcelio Garcia.✝️

I saw Carlos live in ‘68, loved Malo the week Lp came out. I still listen to it, as well as many offshoot bands-Azteca, Caldera & so many more. But Malo stands out as 1 of if not my favorite LP.

Loved this documentary. I wish there were movies made about all the great chicano bands. All we have to be inspired by is La Bamba. Which I love dont get me wrong ,but it's time for someone to step up and make some movies with these beautiful songs!

Whilst everything is true regarding Richard Bean’s grand contribution, never underestimate the capability of the other members. Pablo Tellez is a world class player, the others are also. Just listen to Malo and Dos to really hear what this band was about.

Nothing against Arcelio, but I'd also like to hear from the OTHER original members namely the horn section, who were comprised of some of the greatest players and now legendary today; Forrest Buchtel, Roy Murray, Luis Gasca, Tom Poole, and the extraordinary Tom Harrell. So sad that the absolutely brilliant keyboardist Richard Kermode is no longer living. THAT was the Malo I will always remember!
