I am not enough of an authority on this topic to have an especially insightful opinion, but judging from the obviously very, very high level of musicianship (complete mastery of this very difficult repertoire, staggering technique - at any age, let alone 88 - and exquisite interpretations of real artistry), I'd say Mr. Voskresensky very consciously adapted his performance to the size of the piano and the small room, creating a much more intimate approach than would be possible with a Steinway concert grand on the Carnegie Hall stage. This has instantly become one of my favorite videos, because it has changed how I think about the possibilities of a "public concert." It's the kind of program you only expect at a big concert hall with a big piano, yet that is all turned on its head in this performance, treated in such an "intimate" way. Yet, by broadcasting it on UA-cam, it becomes much more "public" than a place like Carnegie Hall. And it completely works. The small room and piano changes the emphasis from playing for big "projection" (i.e., to 1500 people, many of them 250 feet away), to something much more immediate. And it *completely* works.

These Russians really understand the art of music. The list is long for me, including....Ekatarina Mechitina, Danil Trifonov, Dimitri Paperno, Yvegeny Kissin, Polina Osetinskaya, Olga Scheps, Kamil Valieva, and now this Mikhail Voskresensky who plays so charmingly.

Dear Maestro...words are not enough to explain what I have only as of yesterday discovered here and through your documentaries and the lesson on the Beethoven Variations. You see, I follow a fine international pianist who studied at Saint Petersburg, and with his beloved mentor you mention in your documentary. I found your discussion because I am not a musician but knew from childhood that the piano would be my life's purpose; yet, that never came to be. To better appreciate the Variations, I stayed up all night to listen, to watch, and to learn from you. What a wonderful learning experience that provides me with some insight into what true greatness, beauty, truth, and absolute refinement is when it comes to all levels of pianistic performance. Thank you for your joy, your delight, your still young and fresh approach that makes each piece sound new and exciting because of your artistry, skill, and passion for the music and those who created such compositions. Wishing you continued good health, enjoyment of life, and many more performances.

Сначала, я подумал, это сильно субъективно и надуманно по каким то своим умозаключениям, и потом, много людей, в принципе, часто плачут, слыша тембр рояля, такая у него магия, это правда. Но вот я слушаю, и чувствую тоже, что вы сказали... Возможно, я бы этого не чувствовал, не прочитав комментарий, но мне кажется, вы правы..

What a rectial; wHat a journey! Works spanning more than 160 years! And if absolutely nothing else the video provides a masterclass on pedalling. Putting aside pedagogical isopoints and 'degrees of separation', it's still sobering yet fascinating to take on board that M. Voskresensky is only six generations removed in a direct line from Beethoven.
