📲 The app I use to learn languages: tinyurl.com/56f73j6t 🆓 My 10 FREE secrets to language learning: tinyurl.com/4afp9hm6 ❓Have you read “Mindset”? What are your thoughts on it? Let me know in the comments!
I already had great respect for how much you knew about learning new things (particularly language learning) and how you approach each language with such openness and it's because of this mindset I actually started learning Spanish back in 2022 and no matter how hard it gets it's all thanks to these podcasts and clutch videos I continue this journey. 👍🏽Thank you! 🙂
I've been learning English for almost a decade, first on an institute and then on my own(I started when I was 13),I consider myself a B2, maybe C1 but due to my fear of making mistakes speaking or writing I never exposed myself to it. I decided this year was gonna be different and even if I make mistakes, I'll keep practicing.🎉
I've read the entire book. And she does mention that there isn't a clear divide between people that you say. She says people are usually both in different areas, and to different degrees.
I enjoyed hearing your story about interacting with the Romanian lady in Romanian, and how it motivated you to do a review session in the language. It reminded me of Laoshu's videos. I miss watching his interactions in public.
I think one of the best lessons I took away when learning anything new is this quote " comparison is the theft of joy". Just enjoy the process and move forward.
I think you have completely misunderstood Dweck’s book. It’s not a light read, but it’s not shallow as you suggested, and it doesn’t say that we have a frozen mindset. She presents plenty of studies that show that people can be influenced to adopt a fixed or growth kindset, with a demonstrable impact on their ability to achieve a task. What she does say is that we tend to have a fixed or growth mindset which I assume comes from early influences, though I cannot remember details, I read the book a few years ago. The idea of a fixed mindset is that you think you have an innate talent, fixed from birth. Thus someone might think they are gifted at tennis. But when they meet a better player, who they cannot beat, they are more likely to give up because they conclude that their innate talent is not as high as they thought. Someone with a growth mindset simply says that they had met someone who had more experience and training, so they need to train more. This might seem obvious to some, but the idea of her book was to present numerous studies that are consistent with the theory. And she showed how parents and teachers could unwittingly induce fixed mindsets. Otherwise, excellent video.
So fresh and engaging! And reassuring that language learning can take time, have frustrations and mistakes and still bring happiness. So true about the store clerk. The Ukrainian woman at my local Costco always seems pleased when I greet and have a few words for her in her home language.
I didn't learn anything new here but this was one of my favorite videos you've made. It reinforced what I believe and yes, it made my day. Thank you, Mr. Kaufmann.
Hi Steve, I've been following you for a several months now, I just wanna say thank you for guiding me and pls keep on posting useful videos like this one. Good bless you.
I love your videos. I like to learn from the best guys in the business. I can't compare to you. You are an alien to me. I'm focusing only on one new language. I hope I'll make it. Have a nice day.
I was a person who didn't believe I could learn a language, but I did it after I knew Steve and Gabriel Silva. Now, I'm trying to learn French, but it's been difficult because I can't put English on the back burner. I'm so passionate about English that I can't go through an entire day without exposing myself to it. I wish I had time to do both 😢
I really find this video motivational in my language learning pursuit. I think I got stuck in a certain phase which was referred as 'plateau' in the learning process and I failed to get a stronger 💪 motivation to regain my past enthusiasm. I feel that I do need the visualization process to keep me going and push myself a little harder. Thank you so much for sharing such valuable insights.
I use to be a pessimist but my best friend (which is a Brazilian and I am learning the language for her) she said to me something along the lines of needing to be less negative.. and I know at this point that it annoyed her.. so I said I'll do my best to be an optimist, for her. I didn't really WANT to change cause I was happy bas a pessimist.. it didn't bother me.. but I did try for her and I believe I am a pessimist now.. or at least I can control it without blurting out negatives. I'm also a realist.. either way.. I think this just shows for me I have both mindsets or you can change your mindset.. Either way. I've been pushing at Brazilian Portuguese for 2 and a half years and it's been tooouuugghh. But I never gave up and I never will. I just hope to get better and better and better. It's been like a snail but I HAVE been getting better and better. Especially from discovering LingQ a year ago 😌
Very helpful Steve! I found out during,y recent studies in preparation of the PhD that fixation can be fixed! Now I wait for the code breaking point in Arabic....
Hi Steve, If you have heard about the Middle East even once in your life, you must have heard something about the Kurdish language. It’s shocking that despite frequent discussions about the languages of the Middle East, you might still don’t know that Kurdish is the primary and richest language in the region even richest than Arabic Turkish farsi . It has the ranking of the eighth language in the world.
I´m 44 and I´m learning french, russian and chinese. After a year and a half I´m at about a2/b1 level in french and russian. Chinese not so much because I just started a few months ago. To be honest I thought i would be fluent by the end of this year in both russian and french but probably it will take me longer, I just overestimated myself as I usually do. But I have no doubt in my mind I will make ti. If I can do it, you can too.
Hello! Don't hesitate to look the entire video of the channel easy spanish, absolutely astonishing for learning Spanish, and super fun! The channel lethal crisis also, when you're more comfortable with the language. There an google extension, which is name is language reactor, you can simply follow text and click when there are word which you don't now. Espero que vas a accomplir tu aprendizaje, los hispanohablantes son en general muy amigable, verás que serias recompensada de tu esfuerzo! If you'll speak well spanish, you can easily learn french after, very similar language
Steve: a great interpretation, but ultimately the larger question is how much does a mindset really influence language learning... or any learning? As we go through life it's unlikely we'll have, or can develop, these keys for everything we want to learn. Some people are wired to learn well without these traits -- others may not be able to learn a language even WITH these traits. I guess you're saying that these keys contribute to success, but you may still have difficulties.
Steve-san , or French learners, I would like to ask: when learning French through extensive reading and listening as Steve recommends, how do you manage to memorize the vast amount of verb conjugations? French verbs change so much depending on the subject. Do you need separate memorization practice for these conjugations, or do you just listen and read extensively without focusing on memorizing them? I find Steve's learning methods very helpful, but I'm curious about how he tackled verb conjugations.
Just as the terms fixed and growth mindset say, they are to a great extent settings and not biologically fixed preconditions. It's about the decision to set your mind up. The only questions are if you're willing to do that and if you've already done that or not. And then hopefully proceed with confidence.
Thanks, Steve. I'm gradually learning Japanese. M main handicap is having poor English grammar knowledge. The meanings of noun, verb adjective etc always escape me. This makes it hard to understand instruction on how Japanese works.
Hello Steve, great content - as always. I have a Kind of offtopic question: It seems that you are able to read a lot of books in short time and you are able to remember what you have read. For a lot of us the intention to read is one thing, but I am not able to read whole books and remember everything. How you do that ? What should I do in order to read whole books in a short period of time. And how can I remember everything?
In her book, "Mindset," psychologist Carol Dweck says that success in learning comes from having the right mindset /I can learn/ rather than intelligence, talent or education. People with a fixed mindset believe that they're born with certain intelligence, skills and abilities that cannot change. And they don't want to start a process of learning.
To be honest, I stopped to intensly learn languages after school, only improved my English an in other Countries I learned some everyday vocabularies.. BUT YOU ENCOURAGE ME TO LEARN AGAIN, ONLY IT IS MORE DIFFICULT TO CHANGE MY HABITS, THAN WANTED.
If a company thinks you take too long to learn, if they feel that they have criticized you too much to be competent, and if they aren't getting the outcomes they are lookin for, it is likely that you will be fired. Therefore, it doesnt matter if I have a growth mindset or not, the result is still the same - I get fired. In a perfect world I would see criticism and failure as an opportunity to learn, but unfortunately the dog eat dog competitive business world is not that forward thinking.

He’s right, we should really visualise our success in language learning. And we should also learn with stories in our target language 🕊️🇬🇧🇩🇪🇫🇷🇪🇸
