Thank you, continue putting out amazing videos like this, Good luck
Thanks Ali! Where are you at with your project?
Cheers
@@AquaponicsRevolution hello ! you are such a nice person, after putting that helpful video, now you are actually answering my comment, TBH I need as much help as I can get in aquaponics because I'm trying to do it for the first time in my life. I watched thousands of videos online but I'm pretty sure I'm missing the design part for the start of aquaponics, IDK how to start setting up the best overall design for aquaponics.
@@AquaponicsRevolution Do you have a discord channel so we can talk a little bit?
Hello Ali, Visit Melbourneaquaponics.com.au and get access to the free aquaponics training. It is the essential to start aquaponics in good condition :)
@@AquaponicsRevolution thank you
thank you from morocco ❤
Hi Jonathan, thank you so much for your amazing videos. Could you please tell me how much media needed for grow bed?
I have been using hardwood charcoal. It's very light, porous and cheep. Seem to be working
Thanks Victor, very interesting. What type of fish are you growing?
I did reply you in my other comment but I know that youtube doesn't give you another notification, so I thought maybe give you a notification! ;) :D
👍
Thank you. A tip: position the camera so your whole head is visible. :-)
Thanks for info. In South Africa we don't have volcanic rock and clay balls are way too expensive, so we are limited to granite stone (not the best) Could Perlite be an alternative?
Hello Pablo, Thank you for your messages (email and comment). Yes i understand your challenge. Granite doesn't offer a great surface area. Perlite I have never tried as I am note sure how it will evolve in time... Can't you find any other type of non limestone porous rock?
Thanks
Hi, Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 20mm Granite chips or sand is the most affordable medium where I live, the sand is very coarse and quick to drain, which would be better in a flood and drain system? Thanks again, Marc
Hi Marc,
Thanks for your comment, Granite will work but a more porous and thinner media (7 to 10 mm) would be more efficient. IMO sand is not a good option for aquaponics growbed media, it works very well for filtration in pressured system were we can do backwash very easily but in a growbed it will be clogged by organic matters very shortly and it will require very high maintenance.
Cheers
Jonathan
Thanks Jonathan, i'll look out for some smaller granite or gravel.
Regards
Marc
Hey. Great jobs on your videos. Have a question on growing media. Around my area gravel is king. To make it more effective could you add activated carbon to your beds or just use activated carbon?
Hi William,
Thank you for your pertinent comment,
It’s actually an excellent question. I personally don’t use Activated Carbon in the aquaponics growbed as it is supposed to be renewed every 3 to 4 weeks (more or less depending on the quality). The Activated carbon porosity is extremely small and the purpose is also to filter pollutants. I think that the efficiency In the growbed would decrease very rapidly as it would be clogged and then release pollutants. Maybe other users will give us other comments and share their experience with activated carbon but for what I know it doesn’t appear to be the most appropriate media option. If your aquaponics has a mechanical filtration with different foam/sponge sizes, you can add a bag of activated carbon in the filter and renew it every 4 weeks but it will not have the same function as a media. To come back to the purpose of this video which is to give the top tips to select the right media for your aquaponics setup, I would recommend you to find a porous rock, I am sure you will find some “natural pozzolan” at your garden shop. If you really can’t find this material then you can use gravels but they will not be as efficient.
Cheers
Melbourne Aquaponics Definately not as clear cut as I thought. Thanks for your insight.
Do you use biochar? It's more propus.
Hi Ricardo,
I would classify biochar in the same category as activated carbon. Please see William's question and my response above.
Thanks
Hi there mate good video tried to go to your website but wouldn't load. Cheers mate
Hi BV G, Thanks for your message, we sometimes have some IT problems with the website. It's currently working.

Jonathan
Melbourne Aquaponics awesome I will be sure to swing past and check it out once fixed. Starting up my first aquaponic system soon so these videos have been super helpful cheers mate
Melbourne Aquaponics
Just confirming that this is the product you recommend in this video.
Drainage Scoria 7mm
Correct Matthew, again if you have a very large growbed you can use the 20mm but the 7mm is more efficient as it offers a larger surface area for the bacteria.
Cheers
hi Jonathan, thanks for your valuable informations...but recently I came across Dr. Mark McMurty's iAVs method using "sand" as media with a specific particle size distribution...according to him it is superior in filtration and gives way high surface area......have you ever tried this? what's your opinion about using iAVs?
Hi Josu, in my opinion sand can be very efficient but would clog very quickly with the number of organic matters present in the growbed, it would require frequent cleaning and therefore a higher maintenance.
Thanks
Jonathan
thanks Jonathan, anyway I'm gonna set up an experimental sand media system........
Thanks Josu, let us know how you go with time.
Cheers
propus is actualy porous.
