  • I got some more worms from Uncle Jim's Worm Farm and added them to my aquaponic grow beds:) Fun fun fun! I added a lot more because I need them to to eat waste in my system and lay eggs so I can get more worms! There poop will go right into the water and make nutrients available to the plants right away!

    Plecostomus are great for sump clean up until temps drop below 65. Then you can trade them in at the pet store for fish food and get a new one when temps rise. Or move them inside through the winter. The little ones come in many attractive varieties. Dwarf albinos , bushy nose (technical name L-166) Plecos are My fave. The males max out at 6 inches.
    They also LOVE veggies so you can throw some of your greens in to feed them.

    A couple freshwater snails would keep your guppie tank spotless and they won't get too far out of the water to escape. But the shrimp said before is also a good idea, probably not as hearty at the snails though.

    I would suggest when doing this to put the worms in the strainer and run some water through it to get the coir off. Best to be done in a dimly lit area. Too much sunlight will stress them out and they have already been stressed during shipping. No direct sunlight is the best way to go. Good luck.

    Hi. I have half barrel grow beds such as yours and was wondering if you had problems with the lightweight expanded clay floating and mounding up to the sides. Depends on your system for a IBC I use 4 Koi... to many and you have too much waist. Some people use 25 plus tilapia in a 50 gal barrel although I am sure you would have to filter more. Every system is different and gold fish and KOI are Messy... Cleaner fish like trout and tilapia are better.

    Great video! Could you use freshwater shrimp? I have space limitations and I need to build a system like this indoors because its way too cold here. What kind of fertilizers, nutrients and food I need to use if I grow chilis? All the tutorials I seem to find are large operations and I don`t have the resources for those. I'm pretty clueless about aquaponics so if someone here could give me any tips or links I would appreciate it greatly. Thank you!

  • @WhoMe_1984

    Hey you know what I was thinking... Have u seen Cherry Red Shrimp? It looks like you have the perfect environment not only for shrimp, but breeding... All that algae and detritus they would thrive... You could then sell the cherries or populate your other tanks, though I herd the only problem with cherries is they breed too much... One friend started with 15 and had 80 in 5 months... Not too much of a drawback in your system since they would populate it quickly but then ... lol
    Let me know, and I'm looking for other shimp to recommend for you... I think bamboo filter shrimp, and maybe Crystal Reds or crystal blacks, they would look stunning from the top down but I know they like 0 nitrates, ph at 6.6 to 7 ( for breeding) and temps from 60 to 78... So the cherries are very tiny and prolific, the bamboo are a bit larger but still a small shrimp and should do well in an aquaponic system...

    • @homefarmideas
      @homefarmideas  7 років тому

      I thought about cherries another shrimp the only thing is the temperature drops too low for them during the winter and it is very difficult to heat that amount of water. Also I have to have nitrates in my system in order for my plants to continue to grow. I need to figure this out before I dive into this and start breeding shrimp like cherries:) Keep the ideas coming my friend!

    If you're going to place the worms in the tank and plan to keep them somewhat happy, add an airstone! As for the grow medium, they're going to try and escape that and likely die trying. You have to give them decomposing matter to eat.... Unless you have a shitload of algae or mold in the bottom of that medium, Red Wrigglers in fact eat the mold and algae off the decomposing matter more so than the matter itself. This is why you'll see a lack of that kinda stuff in worm bins

    I could see this working in the pebble grow beds, but I would worry they would not do well in the actual liquid tank. It is not the oxygen in the water so much as my guess is they would absorb too much water and cause internal problems. ie similar to why you should not drink salt water, it throws off the internal cell chemistry. But hey, I am not an expert at it, and if it works for you, great. :) Video was fun to watch either way.

    how do you control water ph? also is there any clean organic way to control water ph?

    • @homefarmideas
      @homefarmideas  7 років тому +2

      iblis khan, that is a very big question because it is hard to control pH organically. You can use R/O water but that process strips the water of minerals that your plants need. You basically have to re-mineralize the water. I ended up using General hydroponics pH down. It worked great and it is made up of mostly phosphoric acid which is the same acid in soda pop.

    • @ClintLeClairMD
      @ClintLeClairMD 6 років тому +1

      this (the mass exodus of worms when it rains) is a common problem with outdoor vermicomposting as well. Because red wigglers are negatively phototropic, putting a strip of led lighting around the perimeter of your tank and grow media will discourage the worms from leaving them when it rains.

    I have doubts about the worms in the water. It contains WAY less oxygen than air, even at full saturation.
    Also they might take up too much water due to the osmotic pressure and die. There's a reason they come to the surface when it rains.
    What species of worms are they?

    • @davidfoley6402
      @davidfoley6402 7 років тому

      Caroline Blondeau , I thought the same thing, but the worms feel like they escape from the colander. Then they dive into the grow bed. For some reason, without the colander, half of them try to escape the grow bed.

    • @WhoMe_1984
      @WhoMe_1984 7 років тому

      Well Caroline worms are usually sold in or with bedding, soo the idea is they will separate themselves from the bedding and crawl into the bed. Then you simply remove the colander and add worm bedding to compost or back in your worm bin, plants etc... His worms were so clean it he could have skipped that step, but he was doing it the right way, your totally supposed to use a colander ;)

    They do eat the poop but they exert 99%of it out . Worms only digest the microorganisms present on the decaying matter
    There digestive system have beneficial bacteria (that stick to the worm poop )helps to break down the decaying matter (the real hero’s)
    Only thing the worms do is break down the waste into small pieces
    In a aquaponics system this is bad like really bad
    The beneficial bacteria end up dying in water
    And the worms break the waste into small pieces
    Which sink down to the bottom and help gunk build ( since there are no beneficial bacteria present on the worm poop to convert it into plant food )

    • @homefarmideas
      @homefarmideas  7 років тому +2

      No, they did not die but they eventually moved out due to the lack of food. The water itself has LOTS of oxygen in it and worms are able to breath through there skin:)

    • @johnowen2606
      @johnowen2606 7 років тому +3

      I make sure that my stand pipe is 2" lower than the height of my grow media. This allows the worms a space above the flood area. Example would be a 12" tall grow bed with a 10" tall stand pipe. I never have ammonia spikes from dead worms, and I see them when I take out a plant, as they're wrapped around the roots in the hydroton.

    • @homefarmideas
      @homefarmideas  7 років тому

      That is what I do as well:) My worms can go from water to air really easy.

    • @johnowen2606
      @johnowen2606 7 років тому

      A little further science going on here too. The worms can breathe for awhile in water, as long as it is well oxygenated. I run powerheads in the tank to help aerate and increase dissolved oxygen. When your bed is flooding, put your fingers down into the media. When the water starts draining you can feel the air being pulled into the grow beds. This helps oxygenate the roots and also creates different water saturation and temperature levels for the worms. I find them in all different levels in the beds. One day I was cleaning a tank with a scratch pad, I left it on top of the grow bed by accident. When I came back later to feed fish I found that the worms had come up and were cleaning (eating) the algae that was on the pad. Worms are industrious opportunists and quite hardy. I often find egg pods when cleaning roots from harvested plants. FYI: The worms are red wigglers that came from Uncle Jim's and were part of a vermicomposting setup.

      it's sometimes also called expanded clay. the way I understand it, they're clay balls which are fired in an oxygen rich atmosphere which gives them lots of small holes to hold water. when I started in hydroponics, I didn't have these and just grew in fish tank stone. it worked well for the most part. I had to flood the bed more often, but I kept the flood cycle down under a minute anyway. the weight can add up pretty quick with stone too. the clay balls are very light weight for their size and hold water much better.

    Worms drown. Haven't you ever seen them in puddles after a rain storm?

      Worms drown in water that has almost 0 oxygen in it. In this water I run air pumps in it all the time. Worms breath through there skin so the worms do not die in my water:)

      I’ve put them in my system but never seen them again. There’s a difference between nightcrawlers and composting worms (Red wigglers). Nightcrawlers do come up to the surface but they mainly live lower in the soil. In an AP system they cannot go as deep as they would like because the water. Red wigglers on the other hand stay closer to the surface their whole lives which makes them perfect for AP systems:)

      I have both earthworms and red wiggles in my system and I have not seen any dead. Of course I probably wouldn't see their bodies but I would get a spike in ammonia when I test the water. Every time I dig down into the clay pebbles there are plenty of live worms. I also see earthworms. I do have an air pump running in my fish tank and that adds lots of oxygen to the water. Worms breathe through their skin so maybe that's why I don't have die off.

    This is a bad idea. Worms are not aquatic creatures. Even if the water is oxygenated worms don't absorb oxygen from the liquid in soil. They absorb it from the air in soil which is why worms die if your bedding is too moist and soppy. They also won't feed regularly because they are probably more concerned with getting out of the water.

      All I can say is it’s working great and it has been for many years now. You are missing something from your equations. My grow beds are flood and drain. It does this every 15 minutes or less which keeps the worms right at about the surface of the clay pebbles or a little lower. They feed on the dead or dying plant matter in my beds. I’ve even found tons of worm eggs so they are breeding.
