  • Hey there,
I made a housewarming gift for Joe and Katie who just finished building their house. I figured the best kind of gift for them would be one that was made and not bought. I used a cut-off piece of plywood for the background that I cut down to 14” x 18”. I painted it with chalk paint and then sanded it back. I sanded it too much, so I applied a couple more coats of diluted paint (50/50 water and chalk paint). Next I sealed with clear satin spar urethane. Sealing the wood will limit the amount of ink from running later when doing the lettering. After the sealant dried, I traced the words onto the board using carbon paper. I love this technique, but your finished product will only be as good as your tracing so take your time. Once the lettering was traced, I drew over it in Sharpie ink. A steady hand wins the race. Once the ink was dry, I applied two more coats of spar urethane to protect the ink. The frame was made out of reclaimed fence pickets. It always feels good to give this old wood new life. Another coat of sealant and the sign was finished.
We should all thank Joe and Katie for building their house. If not for them, I wouldn’t have made this sign and you wouldn’t have had this video to watch. I hope they have many years of happiness in their new home. It was well deserved for them.
