The worst performing Apple silicon Mac is the base level M2 Mac Mini with only a 256 Gb SSD and 8 Gb or RAM. This is because whereas the base level M1 and M3 Apple Silicon Macs implement 256 Gb of flash memory using two 128 Gb flash modules, the M2 implements the 256 Gb using only a single flash module. This means that SSD read and write speeds are limited to how much can be read and written to a single flash module. All other Apple Silicon Macs can read and write to two flash modules simultaneously. I would really like to know is whether an M4 Mac Mini with a 256 Gb SSD has one or two flash modules. My guess is that Apple have learned their lesson and it will have two 128 Gb flash modules which will make it a very good Mac to buy. This is because a lot of important parts of MacOS such as the swap file needs to be on the fastest possible internal SSD.

I remember some nerds were able to getg CyberPunk running on the M1 Max through Apple's Game Porting Toolkit, and it was running surprisingly well then. Would be good to see how well a more "product-ized" version of it will run on M4 vs M1 silicon to see the difference. I 'd be interested to see if it's really that much of a difference.
Yes, but if there is a massive market for 256GB, like the MB Air, which sells 60% of its sales at the base config, you have to look at the e-waste and wasteful resources by putting more storage than that 60% need. I checked all my business laptops, all 2-5 years old, and none exceed 100GB as we do cloud-based work. Just because you want 512GB doesn't mean everyone needs it. With pro models, a 512GB base is reasonable, which Apple has. The upgrade costs are high, and I cannot defend them, but I understand the business model behind them.
OMG I had no idea the new mac mini was so tiny! 🤣 I kind of like it, especially since it's taller. I like that it's smaller overall. I have the M1 mac mini and it's great but now I want the M4.
Nice video impressions thanks. My question: did you notice some differences in webcam quality between iMac and Macbook pros? I mean in normal use, not Desk view. Did the Macbooks looked more grainy, or less defined?
I have the M1 Pro 14 with 32 as well. It still performs like new. I plan to get the Mac mini to replace my M1 Mac mini which I will use as a backup machine.
This video is nice but Apple actually showcased Blender in their M4 MBP video and so it would be nice if the Verge got someone who knows 3D graphics to review these machines. As a 3D artist, it's a bit frustrating.
this base m4 Mac mini is the m1 MacBook air of Mac minis... It's gonna be the go-to desktop for the next few years as I don't think apple will be able to best the price-to-performance ratio for a while
The new mini is cool but starting at 256GB in 2024 is laughable and Apple's prices to increase storage will always be highway robbery. $400 for 1TB? Kick rocks.
and I bet the base iMac still comes only with 1 fan, while all the others have 2. If you do a lot of video calls, more so with badly optimized software like MS Teams, but generally all live video processing activities would cause the same issue - fan noise. I don't know why passively cooled Air can handle it fine and iMac can't, but once I upgraded to basically the same 8gb/256 iMac, but with 4 usb ports and touch id keyb, - and 2nd fan, the noise was gone. It would spin up but it wasn't audible.
I rarely turn off my MacMini. So, the power button placement is NOT A PROBLEM to me. No, you don't need a SD Card slot as it's WAYYYYYY to slow. I am still using my MacMini 2018 - upgraded processor with 1TB hdd space and 8GB RAM and have serve me well. I will upgrade to MacMini M4 Pro with 48GB RAM (you don't need 64GB RAM) with upgraded processor and still 1TB HDD (more than enough as you have TB5 which you can connect to an external HDD which is way cheaper).
Apple may be positioning the Mac Mini as a competitor to consoles like PlayStation and Xbox. To enhance its appeal, they could introduce a game-console-like UI accessible from Control Center, similar to the Center Stage feature. This would allow users to control the Mac with a PS5 or Xbox controller, making it more gamer-friendly.
When they release the M5 chip, they should have a disclaimer that says it was NOT manufactured by Richard Daystrom. If a star trek fan, you should understand that reference.
2:12 “Seemingly requirement to run Apple Intelligence” is simply not true, as all Apple Silicon Macs (going back to the 8GB M1 machines) received Apple Intelligence via software update starting this week. Future updates might require 16GB of memory, but for now no exclusive Apple Intelligence features have been announced for these Macs.
The pricing for the Pro model Mac Mini is interesting. If you configure it the same as the M2 MAX Mac Studio, it's only $100 less. Which at that point, makes no sense to get the Mini. IF Apple keeps the M4 MAX Mac Studio the same price/configuration as in previous models. It's unfortunate there is no MAX Mac Studio now. It's a big mystery. The Mac Mini M4 PRO is tempting. I would wonder if the lesser bandwidth of the MAX would be noticeable with my creative work.
I was hoping it would be a bit smaller, more NUC sized, but it does have an internal power supply unlike the NUC so it’s alright. Just wish it had some USB A and rear audio output. I get a lot of Mac users are music people with external audio interfaces, but most people aren’t in that boat.
Yeah, the Mac mini refresh is nice, but all the superlatives about how tiny is are laughable, as the 4x4 NUC form factor have been about for like 12 years, and with socketed RAM and storage, including 2.5" hard drives. Internal power supply is nice and all, but instead of a $40 power brick you can replace if it fails, it's a proprietary internal component that will cost hundreds of dollars to replace.
why wouldnt they add a dedicated camera pitched downward for desk view? it was a cool hack on the iphone but your desktop literally sits on your....desk top
Such a wasted opportunity to not make the new Mac mini look like a Mini G4 cube.. After all the cube was never canceled just "suspended indefinitely", Well going to have to gut the new mini and put it in my cube.
As usual the base model is a "good deal" for certain tasks, but is atrocious highway robbery if even slightly upgraded. With Thunderbolt 5 ports and external storage there is literally no reason for Apple to not have normal upgradable NVMe storage built-in.

Would be good to see how well a more "product-ized" version of it will run on M4 vs M1 silicon to see the difference. I 'd be interested to see if it's really that much of a difference.
I remember having 250GB of storage on my 2007 iMac. Sure it was an HDD, but still. Apple acts like NAND flash is still expensive.
They could leave 1 m2 port for ssd.
7:23 the iPhone SE. Airpods case and t̶h̶e̶ A̶p̶p̶l̶e̶ T̶V̶ R̶e̶m̶o̶t̶e̶ is also lightning still
The Siri Remote is USB-C. Has been since the 2022 Apple TV. Last major product is the iPhone SE.
Perfection sometimes is boring, lets have some fun, make the port underneath the magic mouse
Am I crazy to consider the base model Mac Mini for my new Plex Server?
It is ridiculously overpowered, as is basically any computer above the modern Celeron range these days.
If you can pay for it, go for it
@1:29 The mac mini once indeed had a SD card slot at the back.
The Mac lineup is literally so good right now...
The best computers Apple has ever made. And probably the best computers anybody has ever made.
An SD card slot would be exceptional.
Unfortunately I couldn’t tell you. I only looked at the iMac webcam :(
Thank you anyway! :)
My M1 Pro MacBook Pro is also still crushing everything I’ve thrown at it
Thank you verge!
It's gonna be the go-to desktop for the next few years as I don't think apple will be able to best the price-to-performance ratio for a while
Yes, as you are getting MacBook pro performance for less than half the price
Looking forward to actual video exporting and work benchmarks on the M4 regular and Pro mini.
I ordered the M4 version hope I don’t regret not getting the pro
Always get the pro unless you're going to buy the new one when it comes out in 3-5 years, then it doesn't matter.
@ I’m gonna feel it out and exchange it if I need to
Really depends on your use case.. The Pro really is for Pro workloads.
It’s an amazing and powerful machine, but for the price people should be looking for something else
Is it just me, or is it strange that none of the promotional wallpapers on the new Macs are different from the previous years?
Apple may be positioning the Mac Mini as a competitor to consoles like PlayStation and Xbox. To enhance its appeal, they could introduce a game-console-like UI accessible from Control Center, similar to the Center Stage feature. This would allow users to control the Mac with a PS5 or Xbox controller, making it more gamer-friendly.
1:30 The Mac mini actually DID use to have an SD card slot, from 2010 until 2018.
When they release the M5 chip, they should have a disclaimer that says it was NOT manufactured by Richard Daystrom. If a star trek fan, you should understand that reference.
or BMW.
considering trade in value it’d be a good idea to upgrade while you can still get cash for your devices
Niche question: does anyone know what the lamp next to the iMac at 5:20 is?
Audo JWDA Table Lamp
its an audo copenhagen JWDA lamp.
How can Apple let the Mac Studio and Mac Pro have a 2 generations old chip?
Hard to understand.
Probably gonna announce it along with the ultra like they always do
6:21 and iPhone SE 🤌🏻
Oh yeah I forgot about it still using lighting and I even hold and try it in the evening just now hahaha
"Although it never had it before, it would’ve been nice if … "
My 2012 Mini wants me to tell you: Oh yes, it did have an SD-card slot!
It would be cool if they made a Mac mini in a keyboard form factor, add a display and have it powered by battery. Maybe it could look like a book.😂
No upcoming M4 macbook air ? 😢
Q1 of 2025...
Couldn’t you just program it to turn on after power failure. Boom no power button needed after the initial setup
does the Mac Mini M4 have a speaker? Or did they remove it?
Has Speaker
every mac has a speaker
Such a wasted opportunity to not make the new Mac mini look like a Mini G4 cube.. After all the cube was never canceled just "suspended indefinitely", Well going to have to gut the new mini and put it in my cube.
nice laidback review without to much of a strong opinion, just your thoughst about the choices of apple.
As usual the base model is a "good deal" for certain tasks, but is atrocious highway robbery if even slightly upgraded. With Thunderbolt 5 ports and external storage there is literally no reason for Apple to not have normal upgradable NVMe storage built-in.
Thank you
1:31 The Mid 2010, Mid 2011, Late 2012, and Late 2014 Mac Mini included an SD card reader.
Omg! You're absolutely right 🫣 thank you!
