Every single RECORDING OF THIS SONG, going back to 1927 is a 'cover' version. Dick Dale's cover is just the most known (and to some that are unaware of it's origins, the most definitive) because of the proliferation of recorded music during the early rock era. "The exact origins of the tune are unknown however it's likely it originated in Asia Minor or Egypt. The first known recording of the song in Greek is in New York in 1927". I have over two dozen, or so, different versions, including ones done by orchestras, in various arrangements, and some with traditional middle eastern instruments. There's some very ethereal and sublime versions. Doing a search on YT can yield some awesome results.
Yep, the 1927 version was simply the first version to have lyrics and be recorded. Can't imagine how long its actually been around for the music itself to have spread throughout so many cultures. And I fully agree, I've found a lot of various incredible versions on here as well.
I have seen Dick Dale preform his cover of Misirlou, it was the absolute best one of all. Dick would play his guitar so fast it would melt his guitar pick!
