I've also got experience driving that fast already, so it wouldn't be a new experience for me (you can get away with it driving on the bridges on the bay, one of which is 7 miles long with nowhere for anyone to meter from), but that's still THE place where the stereotype of the speeding american in the countryside is from

    The "grab a car from the right section" model only really happens at car rental lots that get a really high volume of business with relatively few classes of vehicles, like airport lots. If you go to the same company's smaller lots you will typically get the keys in the office and have a your pick of a fairly short list of vehicles.
    With that said, in my experience, you can expect a lot less paperwork in the US than in Europe if dealing with anything dangerous like cars, guns, and other deadly weapons.

    What Matt was saying about the clouds is true, the mountains and clouds in southern California and Arizona do some really weird stuff. Clouds do cling to the mountains and get pulled down the ridgelines. Some places in Arizona, if the weather's right, you can literally drive through a cloud on the highway.

    oh you brits, going 55mph on a long empty strip in a mustang.
    If you're not familiar with mph, in california the normal road speed limit is 40mph which means everyone goes 50 mph. The freeway's limit is 60 though you won't get pulled over unless you're going 20-40 faster than traffic, which means everyone is going 75-90.

    • @JonesyMcDanes
      @JonesyMcDanes 7 років тому +14

      Its a bit dicey but even if you do get a ticket for speeding you got a 9/10 chance of getting away with it because the courts are far too busy and people really don't trust the police, never met someone who's had to pay for a ticket they contested after 20 years of living out here.

    • @rich1051414
      @rich1051414 7 років тому +15

      Not really, there are usually a few car rental places that let you pick a car out of the lot. I have always had a choice if I wanted it when renting cars and I have been all over the country. In the UK, choice is usually not an option, you get the car that was automatically assigned to you, which is usually a basic compact with minimum options.

      American SUVs are essentially family trucks for people who have too much money and like wasting too much gas. A more "sensible" option tends to be almost any non-performance oriented brand of car, minivan, etc.

    • @Toad_Hugger
      @Toad_Hugger 7 років тому +11

      I think they make a lot of sense if you have a relatively large family and need to still have the capability of most trucks.
      So long as it's being used to its fullest, I don't think it's wasting fuel in the slightest.
      I can understand that they don't really make any sense for a couple of guys touring California, though.

    It was nice and green on the Arizona side then, too... I spent a few days wandering around looking at plants.

      And found a military installation that was surprisingly easy to surreptitiously drive into, then much more difficult to surreptitiously drive out of. Although still not very difficult, or not as difficult as you might expect for a military installation.

    • @aspidoscelis
      @aspidoscelis 2 роки тому

      On the way in, there was nothing more than a sign saying you're entering a military thing. No physical barrier and, while you might assume that you aren't allowed to go onto the military thing, the sign didn't actually say so. There was some plausible deniability, though I was happy not to test it.
