Hi Joe. I just watch this video which seems odd to me because I typically click on your videos as soon as they come out. I've been watching your videos for the past year and really enjoy your Insight, sense of humor, and the way you put together and edit your videos.
I’m glad I found your channel Joe. Your sense of humour and the interesting topics are hugely entertaining. I try not to miss one of your videos, but I’ve not posted a lot of responses. I’ll be trying to engage a little more... :)
JOE! Stop overthinking your channel(s). You grew because you love what you do. I know the monetary thing is extremely important but relax. We love you and the ones who really love you will become Patrons, too. Remember, school just got out, summer just started and I bet a majority of your viewers have kids, families to visit, vacations to plan for, etc....they're forced out of their normal schedules but they'll be back. I simply know this because my restaurant (franchise) ranks very high throughout the year but dips around summer. But to be honest, I don't come here for you...your beard speaks to me...I love you, Joe!
OK, I know this is a year old now, but in UA-cams infinite wisdom, videos from as much as 15 years ago commonly pop up in my recommended. Fucking UA-cam. Anyhow, I clicked on it, I watched it, and now I want to comment on it. I want to start by saying that I love your content, I love your channel, I think from what I can gather of you off the videos you seem like someone I'd love to be friends with. I value your channel and I often watch your content. With that said, I am also one of those "Casuals". Part of this is my personality, part of this is my LONG STANDING philosophy on UA-cam. See, I'm old enough to have been around pretty much from UA-cams inception when literally UA-cam was nothing but videos posted by average everyday Joes featuring primarily silly cat and dog content. UA-cam has evolved over the years and in some ways, things are much better than they were in the beginning. But everything comes at a cost. My long-standing gripe with UA-cam is the idea that people now make a living off UA-cam content. While there's no doubt that one of the upshots of this is that content across the board has gotten much better,,,,,,, it's had countless negative effects as well. I won't bother going into details on that, anyone with two brain cells to rub together should be aware of what I am talking about. If people don't understand what I mean, then no amount of effort on my part will suffice to explain it. Every time I hear someone like you say that you're changing your content to better suit the environment, It makes me deeply sad. Oh I understand why. But the fact remains that people should be free to create content organically in their own way. I didn't fall in love with UA-cam back then because of the high production value. I fell in love with UA-cam because people used to post videos, genuinely entertaining videos, from a place of pure passion. They did it just because they wanted to do it. And for the first time, they had a platform to do it on. I don't want you to have to change your content or package it in some special way. And I don't want to be made to feel like there is some obligation to follow your content like some possessed groupie just to "Support" your channel. The fact is, I want to support your channel because I like it and I appreciate it. But I want to be free to consume your content of my own free will when and how I want it. The rub is, that type of behavior under the current framework doesn't help your channel out in a way that maximizes a benefit to you. So, you have what we have today. You have to modify your content instead of just making content organically. Ya know, not every video you post has to be top-notch, or at least it shouldn't have to be. I'm more interested in consuming honest material, to be frank. And If I want you to be successful (and I do), then I have to make an active effort to "Support you properly" by clicking on every video you make, watching it to completion, and preferably not clicking out of the ads. Well,,,, in my opinion even with the increased quality of content across the board, I frankly don't have as much fun on UA-cam as I used to. UA-cam is becoming a JOB for me as a viewer, and I didn't fucking sign up for that. I have a job already. I like a lot of different UA-camrs,,,, am I supposed to join a patreon monthly subscription for everyone I follow? Fuck that. And I know you're not begging me to do that. None of the people I follow BEG their audience to join Patreon. But there is an awkward dynamic that is being created all the same. I can't afford to give 5 bucks a month to every UA-camr I follow. I'm aware that many of the UA-camrs I follow are now struggling to make ad revenue. The introduction of MONEY into this whole fucking system is on the whole, making UA-cam increasingly more unappealing. There was a time for a number of years where most of my media content,,,, 80% in my estimation,,,, came through UA-cam. Today, I spend maybe 30% of my media-consuming hours on UA-cam. And that percentage is dropping all the time. I've started to move on to other sources of entertainment. Ironically, Curiosity Stream is one of those new sources, and it's Ironic because YOU put me on to it. For $2.99 a month, (or less if I choose to pay for a year) I can watch all the documentaries I want. Am I going to spend money on 50 different patreons when I can watch all the documentaries I want in one place without constantly being bombarded with ads that I don't' want to see and being coerced into donating money to content creators that I like? Fuck NO is the answer. Currently, I spend about $25 a month on various platform subscriptions like Netflix and Hulu and curiosity stream. It's relatively simple to find content I want to watch, and there isn't a feeling of being peranged by a high pressure used car salesman every 5 minutes to spend MORE MONEY. And the truth is, I FEEL BAD because more and more it's leaving people like you in an ever-increasing desert. And that sucks because if you had content on Curiosity Stream, Id watch it Happily. But your content exists on a platform that is not only squeezing people like you out, but it's forcing viewers like me to migrate away from your content for greener pastures. I'm going to consume your content as long as I can, and I'm going to continue to do so on my own schedule. And I truly wish that I could do something to better support your channel because I think channels like yours deserve support. But if you want to make a living off of your content, then you're going to have to do it by selling your content to something like curiosity stream that will give you a steady income for your effort. (And I'm not suggesting that you could sell your content to curiosity stream, I'm simply pointing out that you need a different vehicle than UA-cam to "Make a Living" with). One day probably in the not to distant future, I won't be using UA-cam anymore. From a Viewers standpoint, UA-cam has made the platform more and more un-user friendly. The way UA-cam worked for viewers 3-8 years ago was much better. I used to get a well-rounded selection of Recommendations based on the type of content I gravitated too. Now, if I watch one video, I get 75 recommendations from that channel, and I get videos that are as much as 15 years old and I constantly get videos that I've already watched. You used to be able to refresh the page and get a brand new selection of videos in the recommendation section. And you could refresh the page a countless number of times and get a new batch of recommendations every single time. NOW,,, when you refresh the page you get for the most part the exact same videos every time with the videos maybe being re-arranged a bit or maybe one or two new selections if you can consider a 15-year-old video new. I used to find fresh new content to watch through the recommendation feature every single day. Now,, I primary get the exact same content force fed to me. Channels that I frequently used to watch have disappeared out of my rotation. I used to watch Armored Skeptic all the time. Now his videos only pop up randomly like once a month. If I don't actively follow him like a fucking stalker, his content isn't put up in front of me anymore. And this is the case for LOADS of people I used to watch. From a viewer's perspective, I fucking hate how UA-cam feeds me content now. I mean that I really fucking hate it. It's a god damn chore to find content I want to watch now. And why when I can go to HuLu or curiosity stream and search for things that I want to watch with ease. Keep up the good work Joe. I think you make great content. But I think the future of content creators like you is looking pretty dim on this platform. And That genuinely makes me sad.
Thank you for this video. I wanted to start a UA-cam channel so you explaining the algorithm for it is amazing. I appreciate you being transparent while giving some UA-cam jems. I love your channel and learn a whole lot more.
I tend to watch a video by someone that shows up on my feed and if I like it, I binge everything they've done all at once until I'm caught up but then I lose track when it's just one or two vids a week. My attention span between vids is too short. I can focus for exceptionally long periods of time as long as there's no break in between.
As someone super into UA-cam, thanks for sharing. And fyi I'm one of the ones that watches every video and always gives a thumbs up. I also try to leave a comment when I have something to say. Because as someone into UA-cam I know engagement matters. Honestly though sometimes I feel intimidated by other viewers to comment. Cuz let's face it, you have a lot of very intelligent viewers.
When I stumbled on your channel I thought you were a bible guy attempting to do science and I am not sure why I thought that. The first video I watched was the one with the cheesy big bang theory jokes and the laugh track. It was a relief when I discovered that you were not that guy and in the process of discovering that, I also discovered that your presentation was interesting. Keep doing what you are doing and your channel will keep growing.
Im still all about the answers with Joe channel. I love it man and have been there almost since the start.. Keep it going Joe mate Im a huge fan of you and what you do :) Peace.
Hey Joe, I think youtube changed the way suggested videos are selected. Before, after watching one of your videos my suggested videos would be full of your content. Now, this is not the case. Anyway, I really enjoy what you do thanks for all the content!
Every now and then I enjoy seeing these channel retrospectives, but I feel lately you haven't been so worried with the numbers and I think it shows because you seem to be less stressed and just enjoying the opportunities more.
Just going to be honest I love your videos. Your normal 10 to 15 min videos are my favorite. And you live 40 min or longer ones I did not click on because those are less like the stuff when I found your channel and bing watches almost all the videos you had. I am still a pretty active watcher so keep up the good work
Love your channel Joe. Haven't watched all videos but I have a lot of them. I wish UA-cam would suggest more videos from Subscribed channels I haven't watched in a while.
I follow this channel and your main channel on a "casual basis," as you described here, and the videos that I wind up clicking on on your main channel usually involve information where you tell me or show me something new and interesting. I watch your videos, and other videos from UA-cam content creators that I am subscribed to, on 2x speed so if your video is about 9 minutes (looking for under 4 minutes when I click on videos) and has additional ADS it's not really a problem because of the speed. Hope this information helps. Also, because subscriber engagement (i.e., comments and "likes") helps boost videos on UA-cam (news to me), I would ask subscribers to "like" and comment if they enjoyed your video and if not explain why in the comment section. Other UA-camrs, that I am subscribed to, do this all the time.
Nice chair... Interesting re the % metric... End of the day it all boils down to good content in any form of media, and lucky for you you have good content and present it in an easy to digest, and entertaining way :) Keep doing what you’re doing and keep smiling - enjoy!
Must have been from your decapitation vid. Here’s my experience from sending out bimonthly 8 page land sales dead tree newsletters. I had better than expected listing prospects and got a high percentage of conversions, but what blew my mind was when I started getting change of address calls, e-mails, and letters! From an UNSOLICITED mass mailing! When I retired (long story) I kept getting calls from prospects and folks just wanting to get back on the mailing list three or more years after it closed down. So, my point is, your engagement from the first 100K is stable, now you have to earn that engagement from the new 80K by continuing to do the same thing that made your first group become a community. Second advice, pay cash for everything you can and throw as much into savings from every month’s check. When the Great Recession hit in 08, I had about two years of cash on hand and credit lines good for 3 more. I was planning on getting into some heavy RE investments, but luckily had not so that kept me afloat until the market (somewhat ) recovered. A double bypass didn’t exactly help in 10 either, but like I said, I had a nice cushion. Good advice.
I subscribed because I loved the nice, short clips that touched such a wide variety of topics. It seems like it’s kinda gotten away from that. I will still watch, but miss the early format.
Joe, I hope you read this. You keep mentioning 'grow organically'. My suggestion is to change your sign off. Say something along the lines of "Please, help me grow my channel. If you've like this topic and you know somebody that will like this particular subject as well, please, subscribe, ring the bell and share this video with that person." This will give you the benefit of gaining other viewers, while at the same time engaging an INTERESTED audience. If you make it a point to emphasize sharing based on shared interest... You will gain more following. people are more likely to watch and share topics that they are Because passionate about. Furthermore, the words they use to describe your videos will be genuine and excited. Something that can not be undervalued or easily faked.
I tend to not watch the live stuff, half an hour is a 50/50 but to help out I clicked the bell and allowed notifications on my phone. Hope that helps the metrics.
Hey Joe, by the way I have used your videos for inspiration and shared them with multiple people in my life including my father, brother, and wife. I am a bim specialist by trade and occupational part-time faculty at a local College. please forgive the sentence structure of my comments as I tend to talk into the phone instead of type.
The algorithm changed last year significantly. I have no idea what changed, but recommendation now makes sense, previously they felt like random bs. But: They start to recommend stuff of people you already subscribed now, but it's heavily depending on the video the person is now actively interested in. I look from casual videos to astrophysics videos pretty randomly stuff I'm right now interested in. If I watch the later, the videos of you (older ones I haven't watched) are recommended to me. If I'm currently more into other topics lately, they just disappear. If I hadn't pushed the bell, they wouldn't appear at all to me (unless I look in the abo tab (which most people don't do). So, if you cover more different topics, you have a chance to appear on different recommendation, but you have to rotate them, better word interleave the topics, to 'catch' more of your subscriber back. You may say, yeah that's bad, they subscribed for everything!!!11 well, it's better for you to just get the people who are really interested at the time to videos they would probably watch and enjoy (from a platform perspective). UA-cam got pretty addictive (we have an really awesome science channel in German - so I'm a bit clocking too much time because of them 😪), because I get really good content, always recommended.
You are fine, once someone sees your videos and the topics you cover, along with how well you research the topic, more will stay and watch. I am getting my feet wet in the Amazon affiliate program and they tweak things regularly as does google (who I need rank me high in the search criteria ). It gets frustrating on many levels and may was not kind to my wallet. Keep your head up, your growing with a firm base, you will make it!
i opine (as a relative engaged viewer) that you should continue as you do, because I feel you are going to find topics that will eventually interest any of us. Also your "decapitated" video was one of the least interesting to me (I put that one off for 2 weeks before I watched it) but you totally surprised me with the tecnical details and the scietific revelations. I highly suggest you continue the topic picking as you allready do and always go deep into the topics to satisfy our desperate adiction for SCIENCE. love ur vids!
Well, I know about VERY weird things youtube does with subscriptions so I don't really care about them and manually check certain channels. I hope it helps you, I've got you on the list. (not in subscriptions).
I think you should concentrate on engagement rather than click batey. You already do a good job of selecting interesting topics and titles, and you don't want to be unseemly for the type of people your channel attracts. It is UA-cam's fault. They lack transparency, and that leads to not really caring what effect their little adjustments have. Somewhere about 1979 I struggled with such algorithms, not for videos, but for parts warehouses. I never got it right, but I like to think it worked better than UA-cam's seem to. Trying to balance recent sales with historical data is a lot like having a sudden increase in subscribers. They need to smooth out their weighting values, otherwise growth is bad, and that should never be.
Kind of crazy to hear a UA-camr say "it'd be helpful to lose 10,000 subs", it seems ludicrous that they put so much pressure on you to survive their algorithm... I guess the best solution is to figure out as you said how to meet in the middle between engaging thumbnail and clickbait... You're appreciated though Joe! Thanks for your work!
Sounds like the economy. Rapid growth sounds great in the short term but it outside that "organic" growth curve. So you get a bubble, it pops, and then there's a huge falloff. Or correction. It'll come back. Just ride it out.
Hey Joe, here's an oddity for you to talk to Facebook about concerning analytics and percentages. I looked at your main page and just saw that I was not subscribed. I have been subscribed for quite some time and do see your channels in my feed so I know I was subscribed. I have no idea why I would have to click that subscribe button again.
Quantity isn't everything. There is also quality, and your channel has it far and wide above most others. If you aim for the masses, you would have to dumb it down, which would be a real loss.
Good video... I feel like I should go unsubscribe from some other UA-cam people I follow but haven't engaged in a while. But still... Boo algorithm. There should be some kind of recognition that even though I haven't engaged, I still prefer to be subscribed to someone without it be a detrimental thing to them.
interesting I love the channel but never comment, looks like I should be commenting to help Joe out... so ill comment on this video and others as I watch them
Satori can hurt a bit. I'm sorry things aren't quite fair but you can do this. This is really easy to say and really hard to do but you got this kind of following by making the sorts of videos that you yourself like to watch. It can be really stressful to go from doing something you love, because you love it, to doing something you love, because it's selling. I'm going to follow either way but you might decide which of those things you like better.
Ouch. Been watching everything you put out over the last couple of weeks, I’m an older guy, quite new to UA-cam, sucks that you hit a downer, but I really hope it picks up because in another couple of weeks I’m going to run out of your old videos. Making a conscious effort to like every one and leave the odd comment because now I see how much difference it makes. Ps - saw your grammar nazi video, hope that over long sentence doesn’t set you off...
you're doing a *great* job and I would hate to see you changing any aspect of that... but... on the other hand you got to do what you got to do. PLEASE, if possible, consider the clickbait titles not an option, because it's pretty annoying to me and I'm sure to many others too)
and, although as lame as it sounds, i do encourage you to say at the end of each video "like and subscribe" because honestly that's when I remember to click the like button
Well I'm starting to watch more UA-cam only because of spacex and you. More people will start watching because of your content. Tv is just B.S. and drama it's losing good smart shows worth watching. Keep your head up it will keep getting better.
for me personally, I go on a lot of sites like this but never subscribe. The reason is simple, identity fraud a few years ago, what a freaking mess!! So I never ever ever in a million years give my financial information to random sites. Yes, cause my wife buys on Amazon daily, we do have some exposure, but hopefully it's safer, or less risky. Hopefully you are doing better now. Thanks.
I know for me, I love it when you talk about space stuff, and science stuff. I won't generally watch videos that are about your life. I'm not the kind to follow a celebrity.
Hmmm, well, give it time. I like your channel because, shock, you're rational and reasonable. There are so many fruit cakes that when I find interesting thought I enjoy it. So, YAY for you! Here's one I wish you would tackle; the psychological impacts on the human on mars. I'd go buggy if I couldn't ever feel wind or rain again. Are we glued to the earth by our mid brain but don't know it yet?
Passion definitely isn’t a weakness. Sounds horrible dealing with that world. Try Less stress, more fascinating topics like you have had. Keep rowing...
I enjoy your channel a lot love you scene of humor. I would suggest that you stay away from political material. Love you science shows all so when you get into advances in topics like auto, inventions, SpaceX and outer space topics. I know sometimes it is hard to find topics but your are doing great. POW.
Hey Joe, You can't please everybody. Just be yourself and trust your instincts, you're on to something good and you present it well.
That would be a good t-shirt! “UA-cam giveth and UA-cam taketh away” 🤣
Great chair, adorable dog, and you produce great content. 👍🏻
Hi Joe. I just watch this video which seems odd to me because I typically click on your videos as soon as they come out. I've been watching your videos for the past year and really enjoy your Insight, sense of humor, and the way you put together and edit your videos.
That chair really ties the room together. Don't let anyone pee on it.
That's just, like, your opinion man.
I believe in nussink!
great line from a great movie, anyone guess what it is/was?
Big Lebowski. This aggression will not stand, man.
@@jjoseyallen Yep, "the Dude abides!!" ; )
I'm a new ish follower. Cool to see what a year can do. Kudos, hope you look back occasionally too.
I’m glad I found your channel Joe. Your sense of humour and the interesting topics are hugely entertaining. I try not to miss one of your videos, but I’ve not posted a lot of responses. I’ll be trying to engage a little more... :)
Joe, you’re my favorite UA-camr. I watch your videos every day. They’re AMAZING!!!
Hey Joe,
I’m going back and ‘liking’ all ov the Answers with Joe videos that I forgot to like.
Your channel is great “if you film it they will come”
JOE! Stop overthinking your channel(s). You grew because you love what you do. I know the monetary thing is extremely important but relax. Very comfy looking chair, Joe! I love all your videos Joe, but this is my first 2 months of watching . I got tons more to keep me busy!
Stay Safe
Don't let it all grind you down Joe. Love your videos. Keep up the great work mate. Cheers from England.
I want that chair!! Where can I get one!
I watched your main channel mostly at night while laying in bed . I'll start watching this one as well . TMI easy to remember
Really odd, I just noticed I wasn’t subscribed anymore and have missed a bunch of content. Anyway have re-subbed and thanks for a great channel Joe.
Keep it going Joe mate Im a huge fan of you and what you do :) Peace.
in a picard voice: "youtube algorithm - ENGAGE"
Hey Joe, I think youtube changed the way suggested videos are selected. Before, after watching one of your videos my suggested videos would be full of your content. Now, this is not the case. Anyway, I really enjoy what you do thanks for all the content!
Engagement is not just watching, it's what I'm doing now liking and commenting
Every now and then I enjoy seeing these channel retrospectives, but I feel lately you haven't been so worried with the numbers and I think it shows because you seem to be less stressed and just enjoying the opportunities more.
I just subscribed and posted this because you do good work and you deserve the win. Too bad UA-cam can't see that through an algorithm…😕
Just going to be honest I love your videos. Your normal 10 to 15 min videos are my favorite. And you live 40 min or longer ones I did not click on because those are less like the stuff when I found your channel and bing watches almost all the videos you had. I am still a pretty active watcher so keep up the good work
Obligatory engagement.
Michael Wade #MeToo?
I'm new and I LOVE your channel so much...both of them. I hope things turns around. Btw, I hate math.
If you've like this topic and you know somebody that will like this particular subject as well, please, subscribe, ring the bell and share this video with that person."
This will give you the benefit of gaining other viewers, while at the same time engaging an INTERESTED audience. If you make it a point to emphasize sharing based on shared interest... You will gain more following. people are more likely to watch and share topics that they are Because passionate about. Furthermore, the words they use to describe your videos will be genuine and excited. Something that can not be undervalued or easily faked.
I sub’d for the SpaceX coverage.
Stayed for your other educational content.
The vlogs and rants, not so much.
Keep it positive. 👍🏼
chillin with joe?
way to go #10..
I love sitting with my dog on a comfortable chair that he partially ate when l was out all day that time.
That's a pain in the arse. If I had a million quid I would send it to you. Excellent excellent videos. Thanks Joe
Just noticed I was no longer subscribed to your channel. Not sure what happened. Re subbed of course!
Ok but look where your channel’s at now🤩
Love the Channel great stuff Joe
i opine (as a relative engaged viewer) that you should continue as you do, because I feel you are going to find topics that will eventually interest any of us.
I like Joe!
The biggest troll for UA-camrs: UA-cam's Algorithm(s)
Hey Joe, here's an oddity for you to talk to Facebook about concerning analytics and percentages. I looked at your main page and just saw that I was not subscribed. I have been subscribed for quite some time and do see your channels in my feed so I know I was subscribed. I have no idea why I would have to click that subscribe button again.
This is a second channel, maybe you weren’t subscribed to this one.
I just found this channel. I already watch the other channel all the time.
Their are never problems only solutions! You rock joe thanks for the great content.
If there are no problems, there are no solutions *_BY FUCKING DEFINITION,_* Nimrod.
Christ people are thick.
Im confused... the number i see at this time says 2,881 subscribers..
Good video
TMI Cheer up, we're out here watching.
Oh I love that chair and it has a leather smell wow 😍
Just a suggestion: get a fucking life, virgin.
love Mum xx
Joe please give me info on that chair
Comment comment to help help you you.... seriously love your channel so much.... thank you!!!
100% Engaged.
I knew I disliked maths for a reason... Damn you equations!!!
Love your work
interesting I love the channel but never comment, looks like I should be commenting to help Joe out... so ill comment on this video and others as I watch them
Satori can hurt a bit.
Nice channel. Honest
Everybody needs to vent once in awhile.
Joe´s pets are constantly thinking... Why does this maniac, keep talking to him self. :)
you're doing a *great* job and I would hate to see you changing any aspect of that...
but...
on the other hand you got to do what you got to do.
PLEASE, if possible, consider the clickbait titles not an option, because it's pretty annoying to me and I'm sure to many others too)
and, although as lame as it sounds, i do encourage you to say at the end of each video "like and subscribe" because honestly that's when I remember to click the like button
It'll get better as the new guys become regulars
Do stuff about the dog. And aliens.
Ok, so lesson learned got to make comments to keep things going.
Thanks.
Joe, it breaks my heart that you and you wife have decided not to have children. You would be a great father.....i would know as a father of 3.
Life under math(s)
Don't sweat it Joe, the problem isn't you dude. It'll rise again
Explosive month. 😄
Some obligatory engagement
This is a comment to say howdy to the algorithm. Hi there little algorithm. Hope you’re having a nice day x
Is that an Atari shirt? :)
Pleases keep the science.
I know for me, I love it when you talk about space stuff, and science stuff. I won't generally watch videos that are about your life. I'm not the kind to follow a celebrity.
He's not a celebrity.
@@horaceosirian8993 I think he thinks so! ;D
engaged.
Dang you must be a gooood husband
FIZZ THE DOG
Only after the watershed.... and label it “WARNING - adult content”. :)
So, UA-cam IS the matrix huh...
Well nope, im subscribing then.. Ha ha ha ha haaaa
I think someone raised on Mars would come to Earth and be amazed by the colors.
POW.
☺
Its ALOT more complicated, or should I say, catered?
