If the person you’re caring for is prone to panic attacks, it’s important that you know how to recognize when one is coming on and what you should do in response. From my experiences with people having panic attacks - 1. If theyre squeezing their legs, scratching or pinching themselves, give them something to squeeze, like tissues or a plush toy. 2. If theres something worsening the attack, remove it, or them from your location. Example: someone yelling 3. Speak to them calmly, but firmly, don't speak too loudly. Tell them to look at you. 4. Start giving them instructions on breathing - say always breathe in, breathe out, say it slowly and make sure that theyre following. 5. Meanwhile youre doing all the previous and following steps, reassure them theyre safe, everything is okay, youre with them. 6. Now, physical contact may help, or cause damage. you may feel like hugging them but this might shock them - dont. Ask if they want your hand, place it so they see it but its not too close. If they take it, you may held it firmly, maybe stroke the back of their hand, but dont do anything without consent - best way to know is giving them the choice to touch you. 7. Give them water, only a bit and listen to them if they need to talk. Make sure theyre not unsupervised till calm, but being with too many people will overwhelm them.
Thats my tips, and dont forget to help them seek a professional.

Eʟɪᴢᴀʙᴇᴛʜ ua-cam.com/video/5ksC0Yl348o/v-deo.html I also have some tips: ask them if you’re allowed to touch them first, if they say no, do not touch them because you could make it worse. Tell them to follow your breaths, breathe in and out slowly. Let them know you aren’t going anywhere and that you’re going to stay right beside them. Don’t call 911, that is one of the very LAST things you should do. If you suspect they might have something more serious than a panic attack, then call 911.

    • @AaronNickolas7

Also, do NOT ask them to tell you what's going on! If they bring it up, fine, listen. But if they don't, do NOT bring it up! This may make the panic worse. Encouraging deep breathing is really the only good advice this video gives.

To everyone talking about the 911 thing, it's definitely not something you need to do _every_ time a panic attack comes on, BUT if the person has never had an attack before or you suspect it might be something else instead, that's when you should call an ambulance to make sure. Once they've had an assessment done and have been given the all clear physical health wise, you do not need to call an ambulance if a panic attack happens in the future.

I had a panic attack at work 5 months ago, in a nursery. I remember I’d made a suggestion to take the children out and the supervisor started to have a go at me because I didn’t do enough (as an assistant who did exactly what I was told at every moment). even though it was 5 months ago I remember the whole thing so well. I was firstly angry that I was being talked to like this especially after I reexplained my intentions which was just turned away with rude remarks. This anger quickly turned to me crying and then I went into a panic attack and I just couldn’t stop. When the attack started the first thing said to me was “you need to stop crying, you are scaring the children” (they were there but they thought it was funny which didn’t phase me at all in the current state, definitely not scared) and didn’t offer any support whatsoever. I was crying and physically couldn’t breathe let alone talk. It wasn’t until another staff member came through and offered me a glass of water and took me to a separate room. It took me a full 10 minutes to stop hyperventilating and for my heart to calm down, I just physically couldn’t get it to stop. When the panic attack finished I just felt really low and couldn’t stop crying. I was sent out to the garden (after the whole situation about me suggesting todo this in the first place) and I kept being told to stop.
I didn’t return after that day. I just remember how scared I felt, I couldn’t control my heart, my breathing, I couldn’t stop crying. I remember feeling like I’d reached rock bottom after the panic attack also. But I can’t remember anything that happened after that, until id left to call my dad. That feeling still hasn’t left me today and I’m scared that it will happen again

Ya... that was such stupid advice! The very first thing you do is take them into a comfortable area. Outside works best for me, but not if its really hot. In that case just in an empty, quiet room. For me personally, I NEED to feel closed in. That helps me relax more than anything. I also need to feel cold when I'm having a panic attack. Being anxious makes me really hot, which makes me more anxious. Lowering the temperature helps a LOT.
I think the most important thing is to talk to the person when they're not anxious and have them tell you what they need. 9 times outta 10, NO ONE wants an ambulance!

Ok, calling 911 every time someone has a panic attack is a waste of time! Especially if you KNOW that person has a panic disorder! Plus, that can cause even more stress for the panicked person. Instead, just sit there with them. Reassure them. Breathe with them. Talk to them. If symptoms do not improve within, I'd say about a half-hour THEN it'd probably be a good idea to call 911. Do NOT call before you have made some effort to try to calm to the victim first. I have clinically diagnosed panic disorder and it would make me panic more if I knew I was gonna be surrounded by strange people with medical equipment.

I Ofc tell them to breathe and take them away from the trigger but they need to change their minds off of what is going on and laughter is one of the best ways to go I find.

As someone as well experiencing Panik attacks from time to time as knowing people who have them even more often, I have to say THIS WON'T ALWAYS WORK.
In every case I've experienced so far it wouldn't have worked at all probably, depending on the trigger, the fierceness and some other points.
So for example, often people might Dissociate, what means not being able to sense anything anymore, or they just might not be able to react anymore.
In this case, talking to them won't have any use. Many people hate to be touched while experiencing a panic attack too.
So, here is what you SHOULD DO, in case this video's advice isn't working:
    1) The earlier react, the better. So as soon as you see the symptoms of a panic attac and as long as the other person is still able to react, do exercises for Mindfulness with them. For example let them tell you five things they hear, four they see, three they feel, two they smell and one they taste.
2.) If they don't react anymore, you need to find something that pulls them out of it. It's hard to find that without being prepared. If you know someone tends to have panic attacks, carry amoniak with you. It's strong scent feels like a lightning in the nose and helps most people out of it. Once they can react again, go on with mindfulness.
3.) Get them out of the stressing situation and/ or distract them with talking about a topic they like for example.
3.) Ask the person what to do in such a case when they're calm enough again. Ask them for their triggers and the early sings of tension, so you are prepared next time.
How to help releaseing stress before/ after a panic attac:
-Many people tend to teeter with ther legs or scratch their arms/ hands. There it often helps to give them something in their hand (( therapy)putty, a coolpack, some part of cloth, ...)
    -Distraction
    - exercises for mindfulness (! If the person experienced something traumatic, make sure it's ALWAYS a exercise concentrate on the outside world, nothing where they have to close their eyes and/ or concentrate on the inside)
I hope this added some helpful information to the video. And for everyone struggling out there: YOU CAN AND YOU WILL DO IT, I KNOW IT. You're a strong person, you won't fail in this fight. I love you

Pieces, so that you can stop the conversation any time. Also, try to look out for the "common" sings throughout the whole conversation, and know at least some probably working ways to help if you should trigger them still. Someone who has panic attacks here! Most panic attacks can be treated without calling 911, if the person can communicate with you. We can tell when we're panicking, and will know if something is different or wrong. It's hard for us to hold still sometimes, so if getting someone to sit doesn't work just give them positive encouragement and talk with them when they come to you. Sometimes people having panic attacks need a moment to themselves, and want to talk when they're ready to bring themselves down from the panic. Physical sensations are also really helpful, any sort of rubbing, petting or otherwise light and calming physical sensations can be a big help. If someone needs to leave for a moment, don't chase them! It will most likely make them feel worse. Panic attacks can last upwards of a couple hours, but usually only take 20-30 minutes. And something important to remember is to not say "Calm down" or "Relax", we can't help it and are trying! Panic attacks are almost an out of body experience, it feels like you're stuck inside someone freaking out and can't stop, even though you can still rationally think, you might not rationally act. It literally feels like you lose control of your body and actions sometimes, but we will try to cooperate! I hope this helps someone!

My son has panic attacks .
The best thing is to tell them long in advance that the body sends in certain chemicals throughout their body which causes this , keep telling them that the fear is the result of the chemicals not reality.
Them knowing that going into the attack will help them .
When it happens they think that the fear is real , the best thing to do is hold them and keep telling them that everything is ok and they are safe and the fear is just chemically induced panic attack.
Keep reaping that it is not real , it is not real , it will go away soon .

So, basically do NOT follow this video! NEVER call 911 first! Also, do NOT ask them to tell you what's going on. If they bring it up, fine, listen. If not, bringing it up might make the panic worse. Encouraging deep breathing is really the only good advice this video gives. Stay with them. ASK them if it's okay to touch them if so, hold their hand or rub their back. If not, just keep calmly talking to them. Reassure them. If you are calm, they will be in a minute. The most important thing is to stay with them and let them know they'll be okay. Encourage them to breathe slowly. It's very important that they are breathing in through their nose into their stomach. For people with anxiety, they are chronic chest breathers, which makes the panic worse. It helps a lot to breathe with them, movements they can follow. Moving your arms up and down with each breath or having them lay on you and feeling your breaths. Just keep encouraging deep, slow nasal, diaphragmatic breathing.

Don't hug me unless I ask
Help cool me down (I burn up during attacks)
Give me space if I need it
If I'm standing up get me to sit down
Most importantly please stay calm if you panic it'll make me much worse

My friend had a panic attack in class (I was only in middle school at the time) I was so scared because it happened the day before . her eyes were moving around quickly and I was worried but wasn’t sure if it was a panic attack at first, after a bit she started having sharp breaths so I told the teacher and because I’m terrible at talking to people it made me even more scared. I was so worried and scared that i was shaking a little. Luckily she eventually went out of the class for a bit.

Don't call 911, or each time I have an attack, I'll have something new to fear. If you're a woman or a man I trust, hugging, holding my head, and then telling me something distracting or funny will work. A snack or some water is good too, since they take a lot of energy.

Yesterday I had the first panic attack I've had in years...I was so emotionally distressed by an intrusive thought that I abruptly left my mom's car, started pacing around in the parking lot and walked across a few streets and back. I was all over the place, a mess. I'm pretty sure people thought I was losing myself. I felt like I was. I couldn't stop crying, it was so suffocating, I felt snappy and in a state of complete unrest. I didn't get any sleep last night because of how bad the panic affected me. I never want to go through this again...ugh

Suffered It rn and I'm here watching this since noone calmed me down. Thats South Asian parents for u. Instead they started fighting more. It was cuz of my dad mainly. But he blamed it on my poor mom. I feel like I troubled her even more. I have a history of epilepsy (mild seizures) due to trauma, so panic attacks are a after side effect and also were a side effect even when I had epilepsy. They were common for me. So everytime something very traumatic happens that my brain can't handle ( I can handle most lol), I get a panic attack or a very very bad anxiety attack. But ofc, noone is there for me so I have to calm myself down by my own. Even if they were to help me (my family), they would just make the panic attack even worse by fighting more. I tried calling a helpline too, specially made for such things (psychological help), but they didn't attend my call, I waited for more than a minute. I feel like vomitting rn. Haven't ate anything, somehow my mom just gave me a tablet (disperin? idk), I think it's for heart? Idk how to spell it. And my dad just went back to watching his movie, even if I could just get di€. He doesn't care. He didn't even ask me, even when I walked Infront of him, covering my ears and almost shut eyes to go to my room. Im so worthless, I keep burdening people. And by people, I mean my family, except my dad. I wish I was strong. And sorry for venting here, I don't know why I shared this here, but I feel a little light rn after sharing this. Thanks for reading if u guys did. 🖤

Hi! As a person who regularly experiences panic attacks and someone who has self-esteem issues, I'd like to tell you that you are definitely not a burden, nor are you worthless just because of your trauma and attacks. You were dealt an extremely shitty hand in this shitty game of life, and it's your parents job to help you understand and accept that. I obviously don't know you, but PLEASE know that this is in no way your fault.
I found that it helps me to go to a place without any heavy inputs from the world (idk how to explain srry) like bright (changing) light and loud noises. I usually use headphones with music that I have listened to before, or classical music/ instrumentals, to help block out sounds. It helps me to distract myself via comedy online for example.
If helplines aren't doing shit, try looking online for therapists near you. if you are still in school, go to a counsellor, someone with a simulair job or a teacher you trust. If you don't want your parents to find out, tell them that as well.
      And most importantly:
Find people you trust and who trust you.
      Find people who accept you.
Don't try to handle everything on your own, because no one deserves that. You are worthy of someone's love, and someone will one day be worthy of your love. Platonic or otherwise. You are not alone in your struggles, and I hope you'll find someone who can give you the care you deserve, the care your parents or caretakers should give you instead of (verbal) violence and fear.
That was a bit of a heavy one, I hope I have helped at least a bit! :)

A few days ago, I had a panic attack at lunch around my friends. But I couldn’t tell them what was wrong. I tried to talk, but I simply couldn’t. Eventually when I was able to talk J said I was feeling terrible all day and tried to go to the guidance counselor, but I couldn’t becuase she wasn’t there, and so one of my friends helped me get there, but when we got there and up to the reception desk, I couldn’t speak again. I had to point like a child and my friend told the receptionist something was wrong (he didn’t know it was a panic attack, and neither did I) I was able to them them which counselor I use. Luckily the counselor was effective, but ai can’t stop thinking about what happened. It really scared my friends. I told them it was a panic attack after and I was okay, and they were supportive, but I still feel bad that it happened. I went to sit with them knowing that I was not feeling okay, I should have walked to the counselors immediately

One of my closest friends had a panic attack today during lunch and of course I was sitting with my other group of friends and didn't notice until I saw all of them standing up and decided to check out what was happening. He got taken to a side room off of our library where we eat and was full on sobbing/hyperventilating. That was so fricken scary because I've never seen someone have a panic attack before and I don't do well in situations like that: The loud sounds of like 200 other kids, my other friends stressed and crying, us not being able to see him, its overwhelming. I literally had to support him to help him walk to his other class because he could barely walk. That was so scary

absolutely do NOT call 911 as your go-to step one for a panic attack. is this a video for rich people?!? what if the dispatcher sends the cops too? terrible advice. if there is a particular reason why their symptoms are concerning, always ask the person first. talking and listening to the person having the panic attack should always be the first thing you do. i called 911 for only one out of the countless panic attacks i've experienced in my life because i had just started taking a new medication a few days earlier, my heart was beating extremely fast which is not one of my usual symptoms, and it was 4 in the morning and i was alone. this is the kind of situation where you might consider it - different symptoms than usual, a reason to believe it might be something more serious. but not for any old panic attack. the person will not want to be your friend anymore if you put them through that for no reason.

seriously? Call 911? in my experience this only would make things extremely worse. They generally need to 1.) Vent 2.) Have anxiety medication 3.) See counselor or even grief counselor 4.) Might just need to feel safe and be hugged, or cocooned even, etc... sometimes it can come on due to feeling of loss of control and not knowing what is coming or going on. So helping them to talk to someone with the information needed so they can feel empowered and know what to expect with upcoming situation. And most importantly, they know they are loved and not all alone... maybe after this to make them calming herbal tea, comfort food, put on something comforting and light to watch or listen to , snuggle them into cozy safe place, if they like to be touched then rub their feet through blanket etc and let them try and decompress and relax. Animals can help too and help for afterwards like snuggling with cat or dog etc

Honestly with all the panic attacks I've had, the police and ambulance would've made it 100x worse for me. But at the same time it would depend on how bad it is, some of the time I have trouble breathing from my panic attacks, and I usually have so bad of a panic attack I think I start becoming a little delusional. Kinda sad to say but if you have panic attacks please get them taken care of immediately, you don't need other health problems in the future due to stress, relax, remember you are not inferior, you're the only you so be the best one you can be, remember when having a panic attack that's it's just in your head, and don't be like me, tell someone you trust that you're having one because I try to make it the least obvious I can I'm having a panic attack, better safe than sorry😌.

I get panic attacks. I usually think I'm dying. I don't like big crowds so most people that witness my embarrassing episodes know what they are. When I was younger I would go through stages. 1.) Impending doom 2.) Think I'm having a heart attack 3.) Beg to be taken to the hospital 4.) Hate my friends and/or family for letting me die (they knew what was going on) 5.) Except death and wait to succumb (which could be anywhere from 20 minutes to 5 hours 6.) Tell the people around me to tell people how much i love them. I have since gotten better at recognizing them, but I still expect one or two episodes a year. I had a very embarrassing one recently at my bf freinds house that came out of nowhere (as they typically do) and he didn't know what to do. I told him when i get like that all you can really do is tell me that I'm okay and that I'm not going to die. Keep saying it until I believe it. People don't understand how scary panic attacks are. The brain is so powerful sometimes I even think a panic attack could kill me because I'm so afraid. What people don't understand is that I'm 99.9% sure it's a panic attack. It's the 0.01% that it might actually be something else.

Yeah in Scotland they wouldn't send an ambulance at all my partner suffered a bad panic attack the other night and it took her 20 minutes to get through to them and then they gave her a 20 minute survey just to tell her your having a panic attack you'll be fine

@Vera Carlson well, it depends on the situation really, their are articles that have better information about panic attacks and how to help cope. i have a few coping strategies that i could share with you if you like. or you can find some online : )

      @Vera Carlson
First Strategy: the first colour you think of you have to name out loud 10 things in the room that are that colour. You can do 10 things or name as many as you need to calm down. Saying them out loud is not necessary but it does help to control breathing. Naming things in the room distracts you from whatever triggered you in the first place.
Second Strategy: this is calmer technique for an out in public situation. you simply just put your hand on your chest and focus on the beat of your heart and your heart alone. Hear it slow down as you calm down. This strategy can be more difficult depending on the level of panic attack you're experiencing.
Third Strategy: Go and get ice. It doesn't matter if you don't want ice or if you don't like ice just go get ice. When you get back to a safe environment you can chew on the ice stimulating cold sensations to your brain which distracts it. This personally doesn't work for me but I have seen it help with alot of people.
Those are 3 main ones that personally help me, as I said their are millions of different coping mechanisms that might be just right for you.
Just remember during a panic attack breathing and keeping yourself busy is two of the most important things.
      I hope this helped ♥️

@@honeybaker4818 one that i use is using your 5 senses and naming things with them in the room. example: 5 things you can see, 4 you can hear, 3 you can touch, 2 you can smell, 1 you can taste. but doesn’t have to be in that order!

I am watching this to help myself since I am really lonely. I feel horrible. I will always feel horrible in my life. I wish I was dead but can’t even kill myself because it is too scary. Dying is scary. Living is horrible. No one will come and save me and I can not do it by myself.

Do NOT call 911. I don't understand that suggestion. That would send my panic skyrocketing in seconds. That would NOT HELP AT ALL.
