  • Craig and Ian discuss the D-Day landings at Normandy and near simultaneous landing at Saipan
Did you know while the United States was participating in the D-Day landings at Normandy, over in the Pacific they were also performing another enormous amphibious assault in the Marianas? Operation Neptune, the D-day landings at Normandy occurred on June 6th, while Operation Forager, the invasion of the Marianas began on June 15th. Both of these operations saw two of the largest amphibious assaults performed in history. Both of these amphiious assaults were also extremely different geographically, politically, strategically and in all honest make for an excellent case study.
The D-day landings at Normandy saw American, British, Canadian and over 17 other nationalities participate, while Operation Forager was solely American. Also Normandy saw a plethora of differing units, different service members and such, while Forager was exclusively the US Navy and Marines.
At Normandy the Americans landed 73,000 men (including 15,600 of airborne division), while the British and Canadians landed 83,115 men. Operation Forager's invasion force, commanded by Vice Admiral Richmond K. Turner, consisted of 127,000 troops. This means the Americans simultaneously were landing over 200,000 men in two different areas of the world!

Last segment abandoned; low audio level. ... Poor audio in a podcast is inexcusable; trash it and do the next one; you're just killing your reputation.
