  • Think you have heard it all about D-Day? Well, think again. This is the story of the first Allied landing on 6 June 1944, and it wasn't on mainland France, but rather two islands lying off Utah Beach that threatened the entire American operation in that sector. Discover the full story here...

My grandfather was a tank driver in the 24th Armored Reconnaissance Squadron, 4th Cavalry Group. He wasn’t involved in this operation but he landed at Utah a few days later. They fought continuously for the next 11 months. The hedgerows in Normandy, the breakout, the Hurtgen Forest, The Bulge. He was the kindest, gentlest, most loving man I’ve ever known. It’s always been hard to imagine what a group of steely eyed killers he and his friends had to become. He passed 5 years ago at 97, I think the last of the WWII 4th CAV veterans. He will always be a hero.

@@Livvvid Nice rebuttal. As a 'couch potatoe historian' I have watched Hundreds of hours of WWII produced BBC TV series & documentaries when I was younger & not so 'aware' of reality and later 'based on fact' stories like Pacific and Band of Brothers, Letters from Iwo Jima , and Enemy at the Gates. And read books like Monty's battle in Egypt and Libya against Rommel's African Desert Group. So you do tend to get a bit of a heavily knowledgeable saturation that tends to influence your 'view' of the war from the non-russian aspect.
So I tend to agree with you of your observation.
Let's say, if Hitler had left Russia all alone and Russia had then focused on building up their own forces over the near 6 years of battle, whose to say they could not have then waited till all the other countries resources were depleted and exhausted and then taken over the whole western area to Portugal and say Turkey and Georgia then reinforced their positions. Now. wouldn't that be a whole New World!

He was always very upset though that there was never any mention of the Brits supporting the US servicemen on Utah. He always said ‘we had to go in to help their guys who were stuck on the beaches - we had to go in to pull some off, and we saved quite a few Yanks, but you won’t see any mention of that anywhere in any of the histories ’. He was always quite bitter about that. Recently though I was reading Forgotten voices of D Day, by Roderick Bailey, and that does comment that there were a surprising number of Brits there too, and recounts some of their experiences.

fantastic and informative as ever. why don't you do a short vid on
Oberleutnant Admin Faber, a Luftwaffe pilot who landed his
focke wulf 190 on pembrey beach in South Wales when he made a vital mistake of thinking he crossed the channel back to France instead he crossed the channel between England and Wales. Landing on the beach then realising his.miatake when a man wearing an RAF uniform stuck a pistol in his face. a game changer as the plane was far more advanced than what we had and has been credited for helping to change the course of the war as the plane was reverse engineered to make our fighters better

Me: "Ah dang that's cool, can't imagine there being anything cooler than a forgotten landing zone!"
*Dr. Felton makes video about an earlier, actually used landing operation*
    Me: "... damn."

Yes the secret missions during which the divers that got the beach gradient and type of substrate on the beach, all under cover of the night. Found this out when I worked on a diving tender in the Navy in 1985.

My buddies grandfather was one of the first to hit the beach on June 6th. Due to bad weather they were stuck without reinforcements for hours...
Amazingly he made it back to the states.
He passed a couple years back.
      RIP Carlton Witt.
