    I was in Brasil for this match. Being of German heritage, we bought German Jerseys to wear and all expected a good match. We were at a bar in Natal. Brazilians were all giving us a hard time at first and us back. The first goal we cheered and they were not happy, but we were in it to win it. By the third goal, we started feeling uncomfortable, no longer cheering. After the fourth goal we started to take the jersey's off thinking it was going to get a little sketchy but the Brazilians were unanimous, "Não, não, não os tire!" Don't take them off!. They said Germany is playing magnificently and this is nothing to hide. They were waaay more mad at the Brazilian team. At the end, they were even madder at the token goal they scored which at that point, they saw as undeserved. We wound up consoling them and there were lots of tears.

    Even in Germany we just celebrated the first three goals, then we were just as stunned as the Brazilians. In the second half we really felt sorry for Brazil and its wonderful people. We were the party crashers back then, but after loosing a final against Brazil (2002) and two semifinals against Italy on our home turf (2006) and Spain in South Africa (2010), we also knew it was now or never for players like Klose, Schweinsteiger, Lahm and Podolski. And as we played against Brazils archrival Argentina, most Brazilians supported Germany in the final. What a glorious tournament for Germany. The last ten years were pretty tough though...

    “Perhaps the pressure was just too much,” Loew said in an interview on the German football association (DFB) website when asked why Brazil had imploded in the first half when Germany scored five times.
    “The expectations on the team in their home country might have crippled them. We know all about that from our own experience in 2006,” he said, referring to Germany’s heart-breaking semi-final 2-0 loss to Italy.

    • @JSmellerM
      @JSmellerM 4 місяці тому +17

      That was just a diplomatic way to not say Brazil never had a chance. They were lucky until the semi-final but lost Neymar in the quarterfinal and thus their only chance.
      Germany in 2006 was completely different because it was a team at the beginning of their journey coming from a knock-out in the group stage at the Euros 2004. You could see Germany was building up a golden generation.
      Brazil had one superstar, a few players close to or over their peak and lots of mediocre players who never amounted to anything great in their career like Oscar who went to China in his 20s.

      And the legends tell Schürrle was taking a dump during that talk from Löw to the team, and that's why he decided to take a dump on Brazil with two more goals.
      And yes. The best moment when you can tell they were holding back was when Özil won the one-on-one with Julio Cesar but kicked it and the ball barely passed the goal post. They had other chances as well, when they were in Brazil's box but only passed the ball around instead of shooting.
      And, to be fair to Brazil, they only scored one but it wasn't for a lack of trying. Neuer was on God Mode that game, stopped shots that would have been goals against everyone else, and it was a miracle his fuel run out before the end of the game to allow Oscar's "we're not going blank" goal.

    My wife is Brazilian and was face timing her family back in Brazil while watching the game. Their whole family was having a big bbq party. Before the game they were all getting drunk and talking s*** about the England team. When it got to 5-0 her eldest brother was crying like a baby and some of her family were smashing up stuff! I saw German fans cry after Italy scored twice at the last minute extra time. Everyone was thinking the match was going towards the shootout but that bubble burst at the last moment. I was hoping Germany will win the final at home but it was a nasty shock. This match kind off assuage that pain.

      Nah - I was there through the whole thing. They were rocky the whole time only really beating Croatia with authority. From there it was all down hill, barely beating Colombia to keep in the tournament with a lackluster performance. They limped along, tying Mexico and Chile. Then got curb stomped by Germany and then further pissed on by the Netherlands 3-0 to get 4th place. If they seemed destined to win, the Mexico tie should have dismissed that. Playing 90 minutes and not scoring one goal.

      This is the Brazilian fan Clovis Fernandes. Yes, I also sympathised with him, it was his last big WC, he passed away in 2015.
      But he was also lucky enough to have been in the stadium for 2 WC victories of his beloved Brazil team in Pasadena 1994 and Yokohama 2002.
      And in 1970, as a 15-year-old, he was sitting safely in front of the TV when the Brazilians beat Italy 4-1 in a great match at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico and won the WC for the third time.

    People forget about this world cup that this was the first match that Germany was actually at full strength. They were sick the whole time because of the water in Brazil. They were so mad that everyone was saying Brazil was going to win cuz Brazil had such easy matches beforehand. It was such a crazy match to watch. I remember some of the German players wanted to score more and other ones did not want them to score. It was like Germany was playing against themselves at some point.
