  • A condensed version of our series on this latch project. Check out the channel for the longer series. Forging & filing the handle for a Suffolk latch that is destined for the front double doors of the Axe & Anvil shop. I haven't made very many handles like this at this point, and so this was quite a challenge- especially since I used 150-year old wrought iron for the material- a material that, while soft, tends to crack during forging if special care isn't used.

..@ about 2:30 i really liked the look of those finals when you were spreading them out. Hammer marks just give a forged piece character...

I liked that shape too! I personally only like hammer marks in very limited and rare instances. I prefer to forge clean, but not perfect. I usually leave plenty of marks on the back side of things.

Couldn't help but notice you forging with a side arm. What's the reason for this if you don't mind me asking

I try to keep a gun handy at all times (sometimes I'm wearing one, sometimes it's nearby) for the same sorts of reasons everyone should keep fire extinguishers. Very remote chance you'll need either, but if you ever do you'll want it handy. Poisonous snakes, roaming dogs, and criminals are all realities in life, though few and far between thankfully, especially the latter. I'm not paranoid, just trying to look out for others, especially my small children.
