    When my neighbor and I were 12, we bought 11/32" cedar arrows at the hardware store and cut the field points off and replace them with 38 special casings, and replace the fletching with 6 uncut turkey feathers. They shot the same as the unmodified arrows up to 20 yards. We shot many squirrels with them and never lost an arrow.

    I have a Texas chert tipped arrow that I have shot into dirt "broadhead pits "over 60 times at my archery club.
    Our pits have had any rocks in the dirt screened out.
    It of course would need to be sharpened before a hunt.
    It is unbelievable to some that stone can be that durable.
    Have some fun with it.

    Not sure what's most impressive Ryan, your skills and knowledge as a primitive bowyer and hunter, or your ability to shoot primitive gear purely instictive like a dam sniper!! We'd all very much appreciate some new vids on how you shoot that well!
    Great job by the way. Still one of the vest channels on youtube!! 👍

    For hunting ranges, I'd keep within 15m, this probably holds true, unless you remove the fletching. Target shooting at 45 or 70m is completely different. And I try to make my bows centershot like you say. However, you can't always find wood like that.

    This couldn't have been timed any better. I just finished a hickory self bow and just started measuring spine on blank shafts to make arrows, hoping to take a turkey in April. Worrying about having to "waste" a few stone tips is a question I've been wondering about the whole time since I started this project.
    Thanks! AGAIN!!!

    I've seen, but never used bird points, wood knobs on the end of the arrow. That was what old timers made for kids to hunt birds and small game.

    So fun fact. I can and sometimes do us the same 620gr arrows with both these bows. I have a 2020 built 55lb Bear super Kodiak that I draw to 27in pushes my 620gr arrows at 160fps. I also have a handmade selfback 48in Osage semi recurve that draws about 35lb at 23in, which I normally only go to about 22in, pushing my 620gr arrows at about 135fps.

    I shot a 2 1/2 foot garfish in a small creek with a river-cane arrow with no point, no plug, just sawed off and a small yucca fiber wrapping behind. Just a simple 58# flat-bow. Maybe a 8 or 10 foot shot but the arrow blew right thru it. I was able to get in the water and pull it out. First time eating gar, tastes great. The reason I ended up having to use that pointless arrow was because I used up a half dozen barbed arrows missing shots on other gar until I used that one

    Speaking of points, I was actually curious the other day as to what natives here on the gulf coast would have used, especially in my area of Texas, because we lack stones, especially anything you could knap. And to my surprise I actually found out that besides trading with other tribes, some would actually use the scales of alligator gar!
    Have you done any experimentation with these types of points? I'm gonna go hunt through your playlist, but I think it would make for a very entertaining video in the future if you haven't already.
    Keep the content coming, really enjoyable. I'm gonna get your books too, thanks for letting us know.

    I'd really like to hunt with self made stone points but unfortunately the Eastern woodlands of s.c. where I live has little to no suitable stone for knapping . I have found a stone points of old but have to assume they were traded for or made somewhere in the mountains and transported back .

    Most difficult practice for me is building identical arrows. I just built 4 more to put in the quiver, they shoot well but different to the handful already in the quiver, but the new ones shoot exactly the samenoutnof another short bow of mine... we'll see if time and another month or 2 does to change if any the flight. I may have to just build everything in large batches.

    Hey. I have a way off topic question . Have you ever experimented with the Bolo? ( The Hunting Bolo specifically? And if you have can you do a video on the subject. I can't find a single hunting with a Bolo anywhere.

    Before watching this ill see if my method is any close to yours, context, its a 44 ntn 70lb at 22in bow, naturally fairly centershot made of ash, arrow length ranges but all pretty stiff, for practice i use a 24 inch hazel or rose with a 6 inch dogwood foreshaft with a rounded firehardened tip, as it gets damaged usually on hidden stones i shorten it and carry on, they seem to fly with no real difference with two exeptions that both shoot right upto 5 ish metres then go low where are the rest all go high until 15m where they're dead on for a couple of metres (instinctive shooting so probably not but i can't tell and its all good enough to hit soup tins) the ones that shoot low i replaced the 3 fletch with 2 large ones and they're my point blank, rabbit's in brambles arrows, only so it takes minimal effort on my part to remember to shoot low

    I haven't seen all of your books' contents, but is there any difference between The Secrets And Science of Building Bows and Arrows, The Secrets and Science of Primitive Archery, and Primitive Bow Building a Complete Guide?

    • @huntprimitive9918
      @huntprimitive9918  3 місяці тому +1

      The S&S of Building Bows and Arrows will be a step by step guide to building "Your First bow", then "Your BEST Bow", Then building arrows and haftings points, plus many other extra chapters covering frequently asked questions. The S&S of Primitive Archery doesn't cover the building process very much but rather focuses on a lot of speed testing, humidity fps testing (with shocking results), different natural string materials, size of stone points, a ton of contextual-use information, and just a main focus on "The Why and How" that the bows, strings, arrows, and stone points work together. There is a ton of nuanced information the first book that can't be found anywhere else.

    How many grains, typically on total mass weight of arrow do you prefer?

    • @huntprimitive9918
      @huntprimitive9918  3 місяці тому

      Anywhere from 425-525 is my typical favorite. Ive gone as light as about 320 grains and as heavy as 900 on some applications.
