You are welcome to hunt on my property in Taranaki New Zealand if you are ever in the country. Good video mate appreciate the effort you put into your bows, arrows and points.
Your a very generous man. New Zealand is the last of the unspoiled land with agreeable climate. Sure there’s Siberia and Canada, but only in the summer and only of you can handle mosquitoes the size of doves.
@@TheBigLeeg I dunno about the unspoilt bit mate. Lots of developers chopping up the small towns in the South to make suburbs with no land and identical houses, some farmers who ruin the land and rivers and coastal fishing waters trying to make a quick buck - when they could be making more money from diversification and sustainable farming practices... New Zealand could do a far better job at keeping itself unspoilt and still be highly profitable, only the govt. and some small-minded businesses people typically more interested in giving tax incentives to foreign companies so they come and set up shop and take all our best products out. Guess where the most money goes in that situation! It ain't into kiwi pockets. Sorry for the rant, I'm just disappointed in the direction we went. Being sheep, instead of pioneers.
Anyone can write a book or "lecture" on a topic, being able to PROVE you walk the walk makes you an authority. Ryan, you know your tools and know how to use them..and you DO. Another great video to show, it CAN be done. Congrats.
I am still in awe, each time I watch this, as when I first saw it. Ryan has secured his future, with the wealth greater diamonds and gold, there is wood and stone (in the hands and mind that can shape them). Standing in the ashes at the end of the world will be Ryan, osage bow in hand. The guy is siick!
Great video and your quiver - bow - atlatl - stone point ... etc. manufacturing is exceptional to say the least . Your hunting - stalking and tracking skills are keeping the old ways alive . Modern humans are taught to believe meat comes in neat and tidy packages at the supermarket and 4 of my public videos were removed for "violating you tube community standards " . Keep up the great work and all the best . Lefty Cat
Amazing video as always Ryan! Unless you give it a good go, people dont realize how big of an accomplishment any game animal is on public land, with a traditional bow. Never mind handmade bow, arrows, stone points, taking a bull elk on public land! Lifetime accomplishment, I hope people can appreciate the accomplishment and all the work that went into it. After I get a few of my own white tail and a few more hog on my own on the public land here in Texas, I'd love to set up a trip like that for Elk!
thanks, yeah that is exactly it. With practice anyone can shoot this stuff, but it's having the confidence to head into the field with one of the toughest tools possible to take down an animal like this. A good hunting set is a huge piece of the puzzle, but the other huge piece is mental fortitude.
Holy smokes that flute gaves me the chills !!! I love tradition hunting , just found your channel sir respect the heck of what your doing out there !!!
Very impressive. Your a bow building, arrow smithing, flint knapping, elk hunting, goat pro for sure!!! No modern point, no compound bow, no carbon arrow and no fancy scent covering clothing! Congrats and thanks for sharing your old ways experience!!!!
If i could pick one hunt to do, I would do this one. I am inspired to work the yeller wood again, and hunt proper. Well done man. Congrats to ALL involved. Would have loved to been in on that trip. Good job!!
@ 6:17 what an intimate moment that is so rare to be apart of in the modern day. Talking about past hunts around a campfire and all. Sounds just wonderful
I am very glad someone noticed. Those moments are what truly makes these times enjoyable. This has been happening for millennia and still is the best form of camaraderie
You know your in the right area with rubs like that. And nothing's better than seeing the ground covered in blood after the shot. Awesome hunt, always enjoy your videos Ryan.
Awesome! Elk is my bucket list hunt, and to do it with primitive equipment would be so good! I love that osage bow you're shooting there, and the other gentleman's bow shown near the beginning looked really sweet too!
Congratulations to you Ryan Gill, you my friend are an inspiration to the rest of us!!! Beautiful country, let me know if you ever make it up this way again, we will have to get together if possible. AWESOME!!
amazing to see. its just like traveling back thounsands of years to watch how native americans hunted. the amount of time and skill going into this is insane.
Many Nat Am people still make their own hunting gear the traditional way including fishing gear. But they also hunt with their gear, and it wasn't thousands of years ago. Nat Am tribes still have oral history of being forced off their lands in the 1700 and 1800s when they were still hunting with their traditional gear. The Feds forbade the tribes from hunting with anything but bows/arrows and knives. Some of this tradition is actually handed down to the youth today and at Pow Wows they still have archery competition. My good friend's daughter, Liliy, is one of the youth archery champions. She has yet to make her first kill, but at 18, she has time. I agree with you, the time and skill are amazing.
Ryan, you made a very nice life for yourself, and enjoyable for those of us like myself that like to view your adventures. Well done on the hunt and video! Thumbs up!
Ryan Congrats on a fantastic bull elk harvest, your the primitive hunting master in my book, though one day I'd like to see what you can do with the biggest stone point you can make, whether it's 3 inches or over 4, whether bow or atlatl, as we know ancient man made large projectile points, but there's to many in the artifact communities that think only Birdpoints (Mississippian Era) were the only true arrow point & I know I've seen you with up to a 3 inch point, experimentation cuts a lot of the theories & gives proven evidence, as always best wishes Ryan & again great harvest
The biggest I really want to personally shoot is 80-90 grains... but I would definitely consider a bit bigger with the atlatl. I think a lot of the bigger ones in history were either knives or lance points
Ryan, sir ya are an inspiration to me! Not only do ya have some seriously awesome skills to make Primitive Archery gear. But ya disprove all the nay sayers who constantly try to convince folks that hunting with Primitive Archery gear is “A” unethical because it won’t give a clean kill and “B” a lot of the same people who also like telling people that there is simply no way that ya can successfully hunt with Primitive Archery gear and especially not get as close as ya do to your game while hunting. Watching you and your videos inspire me. It inspires me to be a better hunter, to make my own gear and to take all I learn and pass it on to another generation so these skills are never lost!! Thanks brother.
Next time you guys are in Idaho or even Texas region for that matter, I’d love to tag along. I love watching your guys videos and wouldn’t mind helping film them either
You monsters!!! hahah i'm joking, seriously though congratulations :) I need only a few of your videos watched to be able to say that i've watched them all!! You are a true inspiration and I genuinely admire your hunting techniques as well as your philosophy behind it! Curiosly asking: how different, mostly in difficulty, would this operation be if you hunted with an atlatl? congratulations once again and keep up the great work! (as you probably must, since you eat what you hunt :) ) Cheers!
thanks very much for following along. I would love to do more with the atlatl but laws make it currently difficult. It would have been about 5 yards out of my atlatl range. I definitely want to start pursuing some more big game with the atlatl where legal. The atlatl really seems to light a fire under folks
Great vid Ryan.....as usual. Bow hunting is not legal where I live, but if it were I would put down my rifle and pick up a bow. This is the way to hunt.
A tip for big game hunters, although it may not be primitive or historically correct. Pack a pair or two of the inexpensive black cotton "Jersey" gloves for field dressing/butchering game. Your hands will still get wet but the major nastiness of blood, hair, and gore will not get stuck all over your hands. They have the added benefit of helping you grab and hold on to slippery things like meat, ogands, and hide. They can be washed out or simply put in the trash.
Congratulations on your 5x5 elk. How did your moccasin's/ feet hold up in the rougher, rocky mountain terrain vs. the softer wetter terrain your used to?
I love how the goats were so helpful and they don’t even know or care.
Great hunt and congrats on your kill Ryan! That's awesome!
thanks Billy!
