  • Howdy! fellow adventurers. In this episode, Wavey and I travel the first half of the Okeechobee waterway, which cuts through central Florida. Nothing too exciting happens, but it's a peaceful part of the great loop. I hope you enjoy it.

      All locks work on gravity as far as I know. No pumps are required. But I’ve never seen a lock that lets water in and out using the doors. Usually they have openings that open and close letting the higher level fill the lower level.

    Unfortunately a wrong type of humanity has discovered how cheap you can live on a cheap or abandoned boat. A Hugh problem in Florida, they let the boats run down to the point they become derelict and eyesores. Then they become a wreck, half sunk on a bank somewhere. This hurts the legitimate cruisers such as yourself who take care of their craft. These sorry folks are responsible for adverse anchoring laws and regulations that hamper law-biding cruisers.

    • @PennWolfsSailingAdventures
      @PennWolfsSailingAdventures 2 місяці тому

      Honestly the unlicensed boat brokers, people storing neglected vessels at anchor that aren't even operational or licensed, and people just giving boats away and not transferring ownership cause a lot more problems for Florida than cruisers. If they actually enforced the anchoring regulations it would stop a lot of problems also.

    This is a power house that consists of, if I counted correctly, let’s just say, about 6 gas turbines. Big gigantic jet engines. I couldn’t tell if they were simple cycle or HRSG. They didn’t look big enough for HRSG. Heat Recovery Steam Generation, which would include a steam turbine. Much larger complex. Simple cycle units are usually what is referred to as Peakers. Only used due high power demands. Like when everyone in Florida is running they’re AC and charging they’re Tesla’s 😂👈 Green my ass

    Important to note though that your shanty is a getaway it’s not your primary home and you have land based storage etc right? Would you be right now 100% with only the shanty? And I mean none of your stuff at a land based place yours or a friend. I’d wager not. NOT a criticism just an observation and personal learning. While a romantic notion the shanty and likely all small water dwellings are just too small for ones only home. But as part of one’s homes and storage it’s a super idea. Like pursuing this thought line!! Not all are quite as comfortable as you changing things up often. I think many would do well if a water element were in their life It offers peacefulness and cools the spirit.

    The sailboat your mentioned in your video is considered a 'double ender' The hull has a canoe shape so following seas don't make the boat accelerate down waves. Check out the Allegro 33 for example if you would like such a boat. It is an example of solidly built ocean crossing sailboat

    You really need to get a vhf radio on that, even though your alot shorter than I am you'll need it a few times up the coast. Or atleast a handset for going thru the locks. I had her on my trip thru, she's a really pleasant Also you'll need a pair of 40' lines for some of the locks after the Okeechobee. I found that out on my trip south last year from Virginia. Also tying to the dolphins try to tie inside, occasionally there is barges running the Okeechobee and the dolphins are there for them to tie up.

    Most up channel Lockes can't flood their chambers by opening the gates because there's too much water pressure outside the lock chamber gate pushing against the gates. So the other lockes don't actually need to pump the water when you are headed up channel they simply open giant gate valve pipes that allow water to fill the chamber from underneath, while the down channel locks can actually operate by opening their gates to allow water to escape the chamber!

      @backwatersandbackroads we don't usually get long periods of intense heat, but it can get really hot at times. Otherwise it's changeable, like this year. We haven't had a lot of sun up to now, but its starting to feel more like summer.

    Great episode Brenton, a few years ago me and some crazy friends Kayaked from Stuart, Florida to Ft. Myers via the Okeechobee Waterway, we were able to bypass the locks, we just dragged the kayaks through the grassy areas surrounding the locks and put back on the other side of the lock and then 2 years ago me and Julie and two other couples took our jet skis from Key Largo to Stusrt, Florida, through the Okeechobee Waterway to Ft. Myers and then back down to Key Largo, that was a fun trip, we camped out on some of the spoil Islands and stayed at some of the resort campgrounds, and a few marinas that had camp sites...

    When locking through and when the water level is dropping lower than when entering, NEVER tie lines to the boat. As the water level drops you may not be able to untie due to the strain on the line resulting in hanging your boat from the lock wall and or ripping your cleats or stanchions out of your boat. Standing amidships (bow to stern) when singlehanded and holding the dock line by hand is the correct way to hold position until exiting the lock. Since your shanty boat has no side decks, this becomes a problem. If it were me I would arrange to have access to the roof so that handling dock lines from the midpoint (fore and aft) can be done correctly averting disaster.

    Ive heard you mention your gutters getting banged up when you tie up and i have a suggestion for you! Remove the gutters and put a fold down diverter in their place! You can run with them out and drop them on the side you tie up to! If you decide you like the idea you can send me some money for it! Lol

      If I remember correctly you used steel panels for your roof from Menards or at least a hat style! From what i see on your boat if you used piano hinges mounted under the small overhang of the panels you could attach short pieces to the other side of the hinge that stops at the top of your windows and lift them in the rain like a wing and have a prop to hold them out! You could make them longer or shorter to suit you! The longer the further away from the side the water will run off!

    Good episode Brenton! I am wondering, is there any downside to just removing those rain gutters? I'm guessing there is not enough overhang to keep your windows from streaking from the runoff?. Cooper says, " Hi Wavey!"
