    On towing a dinghy the theory is you adjust the tow line length to have the dinghy ride on the downside of the towing boat's wake to minimize the drag of the dink. Never had much luck on getting it set exactly right.

      I put my tow line through a piece of PVC to make a sort of towbar. It keeps the tender at a steady pace, it doesn't run into the back of the boat when you slow down or have someone else's wake push the tender into your boat.

    @23:15 Dinghy painter length. They have it let out past the prop turbulence so it doesn't get so much chop and vibration. Also when they stop from speed, it will lose most of its momentum before it hits the stern.
    You don't have either of those problems. ;)

    Another epic episode. We love the area between Little River, South Carolina and Wilmington, N.C. especially Calabash. N.C. Lots of buffet style all you can eat restaurants in this area, most are seafood buffets that include Alaskan king crabs, we used to pay $12.95 but I'm sure it's gone up

    Be careful of those "backdoors" as they may have gators in them. The first three beaches/islands as you cross over from South Carolina are nice: Sunset Beach, Emerald Isle and Holden Beach. Right at the border is the town of Calabash NC which is known for seafood and 50 years ago had just 5 restaurants. Now the place has grown up! Southport is a charming town! And no, you don't want to fight and ebb tide as you are going up the Cape Fear River as a part of the ICW. The distance from the entrance to the Cape Fear at Oak Island to the exit at Snow's Cut is not that far but an enormous amount of water flows through there at ebb tide.

    You need the dinghy on the back side of the first big wake. A boat as slow and shallow as yours doesn't have much of a wake, so it doesn't matter. I helped a big houseboat bail their swamped aluminum vee bottom dinghy late one night. They said they had sunk it before also. I later saw a picture of them on facebook. Their stern wake was a foot taller than the dinghy, so when they slowed down real fast, that wave rolled right over the boat. I reached out to them & let them know that was the problem & they thanked me. If you are slowly manuvering, the tow can be tightened up or tied tight to the side.

  • @tigerphid9677
    @tigerphid9677 3 місяці тому

    I would imagine that the distance to the dinghy affects the drag, i.e., the dinghy rides up on the turbulence of the propellor. Finding the optimum distance is another matter.

  • @woodsontr
    @woodsontr 3 місяці тому

    I think the idea for towing a dingy is to have it plane when the tow boat is at the speed it planes at so the distance it is or its placement within the boats wake can make it plane and tow with very little resistance. Now all that being said, I don’t own a boat and only on rare occasions do I even board one. So what do I know!! 😂 😉
