You should have taken them all and given them to people that really are interested and honor them.
I see so many "creative" people cutting such items up and doing all sorts of stuff with them like using parts of them for costumes or cover them with concrete. 😢

The doily you thought was tatted was actually knitted. I have been knitting for over 60 years, and crocheting fof over 55 years. I learned to knit lace on needles made from piano wires the size of size 12 steel crochet hooks. I used tatting thread to knit with. I looked closely at the doily as you held it up, and it definitely is knitted. What a treasure!

I have doilies made by my mother-in-law and great-aunt. I display some, and the others are stored safely. I will never sell them for a dollar, but I'm not sure what my only child will do. One of her daughters is learning to crochet, so I hope she'll want them when I am gone. She's 8-1/2, so too young to give them to her now.

Hi Glenda. Thank you for displaying the 15 crocheted doilies that you got at the flea market for $5. Like you, I appreciate all the tedious time consuming crochet work w/ tiny hooks & thin thread that make up the amazing work that went into each creation. My heart tells me that I would have wanted to rescue that box & make sure each of the doilies got to a needlework museum for posterity, although I think I would have kept some for display in my home. Thanks again for making my day all the more beautiful w/these amazing doilies.

I went with my cousin to visit a 97 year old lady, and she was crocheting a doily. We expressed how much we loved her work, and she got into her stash and gave us 3 each. That’s what she does, sits and makes doilies. So much work. I could never use thread that small. I admire anyone who can use it.

My nanny, who taught me to knit and crochet (she was a leftie like me), made our family loads of doilies. But her masterpieces were a bedspread and a tablecloth. I don’t think my mother appreciated how much love and work went into it back then. Not sure what happened to them but I do have a blanket she crocheted. Thank you, Lord. Many of these you showed, reminds me of what she made.

Glenda, I used to crochet doilies when I was in my teens. Depending in the pattern and size it takes hours to make. Now that I'm in my mid 70's, I don't crochet doilies anymore, although I might use a light weight yarn and crochet a doily. I taught myself to crochet from a little book that I had bought. Have a great day. Those doilies are beautiful.

Glenda, what a great find. I met a wonderful older woman when I first got married, who did tatting. Beautiful work, but I had no patience for the small thread. I had tried to purchase a piece or two, but she wouldn't sell. She was saving it for her grandchildren. When she passed away, all of her pieces were thrown away because her grandchildren weren't interested in it. They didn't realize or understand how much time was invested in creating such elaborate pieces of art. God bless you, Glenda, for sharing your wonderful find and teaching me how to clean the dollies. Gorgeous work.

It is sad people don't know how hard those are to make , and how OLD some are 1800s early 1900 s , that is tatting lace I think so delicate, a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water will get stains out with a soft old tooth brush and some dawn and gently scrub in circles and rinse them repeat and the stain will come out without damaging it , I think your right about stiffining the bowl one Stiffen Quick is best then dry with a hair dryer , works great

Hello Glenda! I’m sitting here crying over the doilies being treated so nonchalantly. My Father was the one who taught me to crochet; yes, my Father! And it was my job as the oldest to make the doilies and motifs to sell and barter to help our family. My Father was the youngest of 18 children and he was taught by his oldest brother to crochet these highly desirable items to support his family. My Father would make the starch for me so the super fancy coffee table pieces would stand up! Thank you for rescuing these art pieces! Yes, that one piece was definitely tatting.

There is no way in this world I could even attempt to work with a thin thread. My vision simply would not allow it, but I certainly appreciate the work that others do.
I had a friend who was legally blind, as I am now, and she crocheted a large tablecloth that look like a giant doily. I couldn’t imagine that she had done this work. It was amazing.

Historically, the labor done by women at home has always been undervalued, and doilies are one of the examples of that. My maternal grandma crocheted doilies in her "spare" time between all the other work she had as a farming widow with seven children. Many of them would literally take months to make because she had precious little spare time.
My paternal grandmother had a similar experience as a farm wife with five boys. Her "spare" time went into hand piecing quilts, made from the fabric scraps left after sewing her sons' shirts. She had one quilt that took 30 years for her to finish - she helped with a lot of the grandchildren, too!

I value my eyesight and my sanity too much to attempt such intricate, tiny work. Yes, they are stunning!

Beautiful doilies. If they are used, maybe gathered from estate sales over time? Just cant imagine such a collection being practically given away. What a treasure...those doilies are in the right hands now..

I was in to making fine lace doilies in the 1980’s. I both knit and crocheted them. I made a 38” knitted one for my Great Aunt’s dining table. She kept it under clear plastic to keep it nice on her table. When she died, I brought it to my house. It is now under glass for looks and preservation. Thank you for pointing out what works of art hand-made lace doilies are. Getting to be a lost and unappreciated art, I’m afraid.

Forty years ago, I mainly crocheted doilies, detachable collars, and star ornaments using the crochet thread and steel small crochet hooks. I made a butterfly doily in variegated thread and after blocking it put in on linen mat and framed it. I still have it hanging on my wall. After getting carpal tunnel and arthritis, I had to give up using those small hooks and now I have problems with my vision that eyeglasses won't correct so I really have to use yarn and bigger hooks. That is amazing that you found such a great bargain but glad you are a oerson who still uses doilies as part of your decor. That doily with the really thin yarn that you thiught was tatted, I believe is knitted, because the wedge design looks like stockinette stitch. I have pattern books and those small steel knitting needles but never tried making any even though I can knit. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Glenda! OMG! I just can't believe the price of those doilies! I have made one before and I know how much work and time it takes! I have a tablecloth that my grandmother tatted years ago before I was born. I treasure it! It has a place that needs to be repaired but I don't know how to do that so I have it packed away. I would be afraid to use it anyway. I hope you have a wonderful day! Thanks for sharing the doilies!

They are beautyful. They made me Remember the time I made them too.
Small ones, big ones like for over the back of a sofa as gift for my grandma.
I also made a filetwork with a Paradijsbird It was about 39 x 75 inches. I had put it in a frame on the wall, it was beautyful.
    Enjoy your doilies.
