    Cliff "CliffyB" Bleszinski (Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Gears of War, LawBreakers) is an interesting read that highlights a lot of what was and what could've been.

    this was a great listen and critique. I poured thousands of hours into the gears franchise & still believe it perfected the cover system and 3rd person shooter. I once credited that to Cliffy and idolized him when in reality I should have credited to the team around him. I don’t think we’ll see the last of Cliffy, and I’m hopeful he can unshackle his superficiality, refocus on good game design, and create something unique and exciting. but then again, maybe I’m projecting what I want him to be and maybe he just was a man at the right place at the right time; part of successful games but never the pivotal component.
    I guess only time will tell. After the dominance of class based shooters wane, where will the genre go? I hope he has some ideas and can create a contender.

      I feel like everybody who loved gears of war loves cliffy B and you'd hear just a couple other names thrown around from their team too but it is kinda weird that we didn't just give props to the team collectively we were like cliffy made this happen! I dont know i just remember it being that way

    Thanks, that was a surprisingly interesting, and well structured review/essay. It's eerie in a way, I don't have 2 Lambos, nor any fame, but I can see myself being Cliff-like if I gave in to my weaknesses, and refused to grow. "But I'm self-aware, that's half of the battle!" "Yeah, but not the half that matters." (As pointed out by Daniel Sloss.)
    I appreciate that this video didn't try to vilify him nor sucked up to him. Sometimes, you should meet your heroes, and use the disappointment to grow, if they won't.

    I feel like he's the spiritual successor to Romero, in the sense that he's even more ambitious, he's even more fame oriented, but unlike Romero who had his fall from grace when he was what, 25? With daikatana, when the world humbled him, Cliff is what 45 now when its happening? Learning the humbling lesson at such an old age must suck.
    This is something you should learn as a teen or a young adult

    I tried listening to the audiobook edition. To be honest.. I didn’t need to know Cliff’s whack off schedule. But the thing that really irked me was he didn’t even have the nuts to narrate it himself. Even John Romero did the audiobook of his Doom Guy autobiography. Even George W. Bush did the audiobook of his Decision Points. Even Greg Sestero did the audio book his Disaster Artist. I didn’t want to listen to this Kurt guy. But also, the book was a very difficult thing to stay interested in at all and I eventually bounced off of. And this book is directly in my upper echelon of subject interests, it should have been very easy to maintain my attention and it flat out didn’t.

      He divorced her because she yelled at someone in a parking lot, totally avoiding the years of affairs. He also refused to bring her to work events because she puked one time and he had to take her home early, but I also think he couldn't flirt with women in front of her and uses this as an excuse

  • @Shishkebarbarian

    i think you missed the point of his memoir almost entirely. it is a form of dealing with his trauma and an exploration of how it affected and still affects his life. all of the things you list as negative character traits... he agrees with that and explores his life of what led up to him being like this. he is obssesive about the things he values in life but isn't happy about it and it doesn't fill that hole inside him. this book is therapy. CBS did a way better dive in his mental state and the meaning of this book than this video. anyone remotely interested in his journey should take a deeper look. BTW, he has been in professional therapy for years according to a recent interview.
    I'm not a CliffyB fan by any means, in fact i only played 2 of "his" games, Jazz and GoW1, and didn't realize who designed them until well after. but the point i'm trying to make is the man seems to be in anguish and trying to deconstruct himself, and cannot. which is sad.

    • @NthReview
      @NthReview  Рік тому +1

      What’s interesting is that you criticize my video and yet we reach the exact same conclusion: he is unable to effectively process his trauma and this book was the vessel by which he made his best attempt. Unfortunately, the book itself doesn’t seem to be in on the meta narrative despite being written by CliffyB himself, so it does paint a picture of an emotionally broken animal who is blissfully unaware that his pursuits are shallow, his relationship with his wife flirts with misogyny and he can’t understand why his type of game design is outmoded. Most importantly: he has not changed or provided evidence of changing based on these understandings. And I see this in his tweets to this day as well.
      If there is a story where CliffyB acknowledges these deep flaws, this book doesn’t do it, however much groundwork it lays for why he is that way.

    • @Shishkebarbarian
      @Shishkebarbarian Рік тому +4

      @@NthReview right, deep childhood trauma isn't easy to get over and this is part of his therapy. To make fun of it, him, and his behavior that he is both aware of and unhappy about, is simply a [forgive my bluntness] a stupid way to "review" this book. It's clear you don't like him beside the book being not any good. I criticize your video not because i like the book, or even Cliff, but because the book review focuses, in my opinion, entirely too much on how much you dislike the person and his flaws, you just come off as petty. I didn't feel like i watched a review, instead witnessed you treat him as a punching bag.

      @@Shishkebarbarian As I said multiple times in the video, I don't have it out for CliffyB, I've met the dude, he seems cool as a person. However, I can only review the book based on the content of the book. And the content of the book does not paint a very sympathetic person. He did this to himself, not me. I was not out there with an axe trying to defile his personality and I say that in the review as well.

    Western consumerist culture at its worst. No human values, only money and fame matters.
    John Romero had many nice sports cars, and is almost always a fun interesting guy to hear, despite the anger some still have for his Daikatana failure.
