This is such a great "time capsule" of what game development used to be like in early 2000. Calling a guy "walking hr nightmare", discussing boob size of an NPC, taking about crunch in the open, actually playing live demos on stage... This stuff just doesn't happen anymore.

Epic also didn't want to sell the maps as DLC, they wanted to do what they did with Unreal on PC forever, keep giving free content to keep players engaged and around. They believed more in the day 1 sales of the games in the franchise, so they wanted to keep people there so they'd get huge sales on Gears 2 and so on. MS ofcourse saw things differently, and that began the 1st map packs delays that went on forever, until Epic got upset enough to start putting out little blogs explaining that the maps were actually done early and it was MS struggling with them. They eventually gave in to MS after a final behind-closed-doors sitdown where clearly MS dropped bags of $$$$ on Epic, and the transparency disappeared and the $DLC$ map packs became a thing in Gears.
What a great time capsule of what life was like back in the day! It's the perfect blend of cringe and nostalgia. The fact that the game still holds up today goes to show how much of a labor of love this was for the team that worked on it.

Over the last year we have seen console games become grindfests requiring almost pay to play in too many ways. I miss the days when games were 15-20 hour incredible adventures that you enjoyed, put down, and picked up the next one and rinse and repeat. That was the beauty of that 360/PS3 era. They still come but are far and few between.

this video is a good example of why games don't feel the same. these guys are a good representation of who used to make our games. this is who i like to call the professional hobbyist. its these same type of people that brought us personal computing in the first place, think the early days of apple. the game creators of today are young and brainwashed by the institution and game development is just a job. these guys grew up with the technology and saw gaming transition from its infancy all the way to the 7th generation . they made games because they loved games.
