they were not always. there was a time when black persons were ASHAMED to wear their natural hair. it was considered taboo and embarrassing. remember the perm years. because of the booming european/lebanese wig culture among black women, i do not see black hair worn naturally now as a step up or a move to consciousness. it's a niche. just like fat is now a niche. another market to be tapped and drained, while politically correctly touting inclusion, and hiding behind cancel culture. it's trending.
synthetic braids is not black hair.

There shouldn't need to be a law. It's common sense. You don't touch, take off or cut anyone's hair unless it's yours. Remember the episode in Grey's Anatomy Dereck said: " It is 2012 you want to be shocked by the sight of a white man with a black baby... you're about three decades too late!" Bailey then pulled him aside and said: " She was not staring at you because daddy is white and his daughter is black, she was staring at you two because daddy has nice hair, maybe perfect hair. But for whatever reason, his daughter's hair is 31 flavors of wrong. It's hard on the eyes. Look you are white, but your daughter is black. Do your baby's hair!" Dereck learned that Zola has her own kitchen and turned out Meredith knew all along. If we all learn and accept then it shouldn't be an issue.

Yet, this Long standing Society to the detriment of many has snatched so much of their innovations, creativity, talent and culture to either claim as their own or appropriate.
We have to fight for a right to wear our hair the way God himself designed it to be.
And ANY school that is under the Umbrella of Religion should have the most shame.

This was done to Native Americans as well. Hair was shorn which was an embarrassment to Native Americans. This occurred in late 1800s and early 1900s. How you wear your hair is personal choice as long as it is clean and neat who cares. In sports some need short hair for safety such as wrestlers. But to be told you have to undo a $100+ hair style does not make any sense. I had hair that was coarse and curly in my young years and there were few hair products to tame it. I was never told to change my hairstyle. Different time.

Same. I just graduated from grad school at a prestigious school, and after not doing anything to my hair for an entire year (depression), it's finally free and I can wear it as I please. But I keep getting rejected (I also don't wear makeup and have hyper pigmentation marks on my face). Looks like Imma have to conform until I get in the door.
Shame. No matter how much education we have, or where we go to school....
It's like the scene from "Our Kind of People" where the daughter says to her father in front of a room full of white male execs, "No matter how many millions you put in their pocket, they find any opportunity to separate themselves from us" (or something of that nature).

Black universities have similar stipulations in their professional schools. This policing of hair is immensely belittling. Straightening our hair damages it, and braids are low maintenance and sleek.

Like teachers across the country made such a huge deal out of black girls hair that the United States Government had to take out time to address it. Gimme a break. Ilhan Omar is a child.

I don't even know why there should be such a strict dress code in the first place, as long as the students are not exposing private parts and their dressing isn't discriminating any culture, religion or ethnicity then they should be allow to dress and have their hair they way they want. If a student doesn't want to study or isn't going well, covering shoulders straightning hair and having skirt or shorts pass their knees won't magically solve the problem.

It’s not ridiculous at all. Do you think you are the only people on earth who are required to present a certain image when representing a company? No, you are not! And, if you work for a business like an investment firm, Afros, braids and weave are not professional looking. Sorry that you don’t like that, but it’s just a fact. Some businesses want a very clean cut image. If you can’t live up to that by presenting yourself a certain way, look for another job. If a white woman worked for such a business, I doubt they’d let her come to work with a pink wig that goes down to her navel. Just because you don’t like something doesn’t make it racism. In fact, the more you feign that card and play it, the less people are willing to listen to you or even want to be around you.
