This followed the gold rush just 2 years earlier, and the coinage act of 1849.They were minted to stimulate the economy.James Longacre's first 2 double eagles he designed have never been found. Some 1850 fun facts, there were 30 states in the union, and about 240 million population, led by NY,thw largest city with 500K people, have a good night buddy, fantastic coin and piece of history
Short answer, no, I do not think it’s been cleaned. It’s a VF grade and has been handled a lot so wear vs cleaning gets tough. Now I’m sure someone at PCGS could show me exactly where it has been cleaned, but from seeing it in your video I’m not seeing obvious signs of cleaning. Truly a beautiful coin and a beautiful piece of history.
Thanks. I really can't detect cleaning, unless it is in the overall look or color of the coin. I have thought about cracking this one out and sending it to NGC for their opinion. What do you think?
@@Ontario100 I have learned from experience, chances are, they will also call it cleaned, the best way to tell is to tilt it at an angle under a good light and twirl it around, and you will start to see what they’re talking about.
Nice addition to your collection. There is something pretty special about owning a piece of American history like our early coinage, if only they could talk and tell us who once owned and used that coin. GD

I appreciate you and your comments! Pinning this one.
Beautiful mate! Lovely double eagle!
Wow! Great purchase. For me the history is more important than the grade. I agree with you on the die rotation. Great coin!
Thanks. Do you think this coin is cleaned? I am not sure.

I think about that a lot. Image the pockets, purses, saddle bags and banks this coin has been in. Thanks!
