- I've got a single malt scotch whisky from the Mortlach distillery in Speyside today. This is their standard entry-level 12 year old. I'll taste it and give you my thoughts. Cheers!

I learned so many things in this video. 1. I can drink as much whisky as I want, as long as I eat a piece of broccoli. 2. You are a Canadian G. 3. There are many whiskys to try before Mortlach. Thank you for your service!
Broccoli cancels out whisky. It's science. 😂😂😂
Cheers buddy.
Thanks
The Mortlach 12 just doesn't get the love I think it deserves. Yes, there are tonnes of more challenging and exciting whiskies out there, better presented. However, for sheer reachability it's right at the top. A very good choice to share with someone who's never really tried scotch before. I love it and it always has a place on my shelf (pretty bottle too!)
I agree this gets too much hate in reviews. I think it's a genuinely delicious bottle, I'm enjoying mine a lot! 🥃
Great timing🎉. Just picked up my first bottle of mortlach 12 couple days ago. Love it despite the diageo treatment it gets. Also have a soft spot for the other diageo worm tubbers glen elgin and oban. Thx for the review.
Hah we have a lot in common, it seems. 🥃
I bought this one on offer some time ago. It was a big steal, like 33.50 EUR. I appreciate this whisky. Really like the sherry and that savoury funk in it. It's got balance and character. I agree with the score, too.
Great minds think alike. 😉🥃
Normally this goes for 105 CAD in Ontario but I bought a bittle when it was marked down for $80. At 105 its ok but at 80 iys excellent, I'll pribably never buy the 12 again but I'm keen to try the 16.
I like Mortlach, I think it's a cool whisky. IBs are good and I haven't tried last years' but the Mortlach 13 special release was beautiful. 12 is a solid solid whisky, good character 🥃
Tried this one was ok with it. Agree that on the first try it came across as competent but easy to forget. After this review inspired to try again. Good review!
Thanks. Hope you enjoy it more next time. Cheers! 🥃
Great review Geoff. Mortlach was always one of my favorite. I do appreciate older stuff 15+... from them. Game of thrones edition was pretty good in my opinion but of course overpriced. In US I was lucky to get IB Gordon and macphail 15 46% abv non chill filtered and natural color for $72 which is half the price of GOT edition 😀. Unfortunately I could only purchase 3 bottles...lol. cheers
Meaty and savory.. I think people are trying to capture some of the unique intensities in the Mortlach. It honestly is a very all around balanced scotch but much more robust than a glenmo for sure. It has grown on me immensely. Great to have a bottle of Mortlach 12 on hand to avoid drinking my more expensive bottles or for sharing with newbies.
Agree! 🥃
Thanks again! The Witchie is $50 for me and I've been kinda on the fence or at least leaning against it, standing on the NO side. Part of it is I've a sherry butt IB from Hart Bros.
Well if you've got some Mortlach IBs on the shelf, those will likely be better. 🥃
I love the 16 but haven't tried the 12. Signatory has a 14 yo 2008 Unchill-Filtered one for about $50-55 that is pretty good.
That's a good price for that Signatory. Good find! 🥃
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on a Mortlach, Geoff.
Love the Mortlach s I've tried... but most of them are IBs as usual. I prefer to leave th OBs for others to enjoy.
Slàinte mhath
Smart move. The IBs are definitely the way to go. 🥃
I might try Mortlach if I go to a bar and see it. I don't normally buy lower strength, chill filtered whiskies for my collection these days, but I might consider some exceptions if I try them first. Lighter whisky is a good warm-up if I'm planning to drink some cask strength firewater later. Where I live, independent bottlings of Scotch whisky are scarce but sometimes show up. If I see an independent Mortlach that doesn't feature Diageo's tampering, I'll certainly be tempted.
Makes perfect sense to me. Mortlach IBs are definitely the way to go, if you can find them. Cheers! 🥃
Solid review. Just enough silliness, without being malt box ridiculousness. Good balance.
Malt Box is silly? Lol really?
Hi Geoff, the only mortlach I’ve had was an IB at cask strength. My next Mortlach will probably be another IB . Slàinte Geoff.
You're doing it right, then. Cheers, buddy! 🥃
Well, I had this on my wish list and now I think I’ll only get it if it goes on sale. I got a 16 year before the price hike so hopefully that one is good.
The 16 is really solid. 🥃
The rant was spot on 👌
But yeah.... could have been shorter... (😂)
Great review like always My Friend 😎👍
Slainte 🥃🥃
Hah yeah might have gone too far with that rant. Cheers! 🥃
Travel retail 14 is certainly worth a try. I prefer the 16 overall but value is better on the 14.
I'll have to try it! 🥃
I don't have the 12 but have the 14. And I love it. Got it a year ago for about $78. Just like the 12, I think it has a good balance of flavors. The 12 goes for about $76 now here in the Philippines. Glendronach 12 goes for $54. I'll stick with GD.
Seems like I need to try that 14... 🥃
Hi! Is GD 12 similar to Mortlach? I'm still deciding as I currently have GD12 and Craigellachie 12. I'm choosing between Bunnahabain 12, Laphroaig 10 or speyburn 15. Would like to balance out my selection for this haul and would appreciate recommendations. I'm more into meaty and intense whiskies
Spot on review! Another good but could be great Diageo offering! I'm recognizing a theme! Nice try but how is it that the 'Beast of Dufftown' (no relation) is chill-filtered and watered down to 43%? Love me some Mortlach but I only buy I.B.'s now. Cheers bud.
Hah true. Tamed beast more like it. Good call on the IBs, they're the best way to go! 🥃
Good review Geoff . I never try Mortlach , this whisky not heave in tbilisi and buy in Germany online market plas deliver price is up and i choice buy Ardbeg 10 yo in Tbilisj )))) Gagimarjos my friend !
Hah you made the right choice, my friend. Cheers! 🥃
@@Gwhisky i know )))
56 euro in my market so a standard price or a bit over for standard 12 year olds. However I might have expected a higher score from the 'legendary' Mortlach given its reputation from 'back in the day'. Perhaps the next age up is a better bet? 🥦🥃
The 16 is definitely a step up. As for the 12, it's only €38 here, so I'm good with it for that price. 🥃
@@Gwhisky I see the 14YO is available here outside of travel retail so might go for that in Autumn 🍁
Hope it's good. No reason to assume it wouldn't be. 🥃
Mortlach 12 is 61-72+ euros in my market, so it stays on retailers' shelves.
As it should. Way too much...
I stop buying Mortlach anymore, they(Diageo) do not keep the same quality. Luckily I still have a few old 16 yrs bottles. nice review thanks.
Good call stocking up. And I understand what you mean. Diageo doesn't do much to get in our good graces. Cheers buddy. 🥃
When is the worm tub episode scheduled?😉
Good idea!
Only tried this one once. But I remember it being too sweet for me. Almost sickly sweet
I definitely don't find it overly sweet, especially in comparison to other sherried whiskies. 🥃
@Gwhisky fair enough. I was surprised because I have the glenallachie and dalmore 12 and like them perfectly fine. But something about Mortlach tasted similar to glenfarclas but dialed to 11
The only Mortlach release that is relatively widely available in our region (Israel) is Rare Old. What do you think about it?
Unfortunately I haven't tried it. 🥃
Curious if you see or have tried the 13 YR Special Release (55.9%). The step up in intensity is ... interesting. But worth a pour in a bar to try.
I didn't want to pull the trigger on that one because of the price. I'd definitely be interested to try it, though. 🥃
Sell organs, eh? I'm in need of a pair of lungs - I'll chip in for one from you, then I'm halfway there🤣 Not had any Mortlach yet, but I have samples to get to. Cheers Geoff and have a great weekend.
Always on the lookout for a sherried Mortlach, independent bottleds of course . Unfortunately, these days I'll be lucky if i could affoed even a 12 year old.
I did score a dechar-rechar 11 year old that really shows off the steak-like quality. And i hate to say it but the GOT version is worth dtinking @46% if its at a giveaway price.
When was drinking every entry level 12 year old, this was out of stock locally and by the time it was available and i heard some "above average" reviews I was already a total INTEGRITY snob, so I never tried it.
That GoT bottling is still on a few shelves here. Might have to grab it if I see it at a good price. It's a solid brand. The integrity thing is annoying, but love the style. 🥃
@@Gwhisky the GOT Mortlach is a still around $100, it's the Clynelish that's sometimes around $50 and it's over 50abv.
The GOT series is what killed me about Diageo and coloring. If you line up all the drams, they are the same color.
How about doing a VS say, Mortlach 12 vs Glen Garioch 12?
Had the Mortlach 12 a while back, bit pricey (≈€55). I don’t know why, but Mortlach 12 isn’t my style of whiskey. Bit too soft in my opinion, maybe if the abv was higher it would’ve been more interesting.
Totally understandable. Weak specs and I know several people who find it unimpressive. I'm a fan, though. Cheers. 🥃
Is this one better than a Macallan Quest?
No idea. I haven't tried the Quest. 🥃
5:26 Come to Langkawi 🇲🇾 to enjoy duty free real price on whisky 😎
Never been to Langkawi, but I've been to Malaysia. Love it there! 🥃
Can you recommend me a good lowland sherry matured single malt at a decent price?
Tough one. Bladnoch 14 is beautiful, but hardly budget friendly. Not a big fan of Auchentoshan. Lowland + sherry + cheap is pretty difficult. My best idea would be Glenkinchie Distillers Edition. Not too pricey and a great casual sipper. Cheers! 🥃
@@Gwhisky I have tried the Bladnoch 14 but must have had bad luck as it was quite sulfury and almost moldy in the taste and nose.
Maybe just a bad cask but those should not pass through inspection.
I have tried Auchentochan from Signatory? wich was single cask and i KNOW how good they could be if the management changed corse
IB Auchentoshan is the way to go, yes. Their OBs aren't whiskies I recommend, however. As for the Bladnoch, there is a sulfur element in the 14, but I absolutely love it. However, Bladnoch as a brand is very divisive. Even their non sherried stuff is very much love-it-or-hate-it. I'm a fan, but I understand why many people aren't. 🥃
43.4 ABV? Such a weird percentage 😅
It is...
Sadly the new Mortlach 12 Taiwan edition got only 40.4%… It’s hard to feel the Beast of Duffrown with such a low abv bottle
Hah yeah I haven't bought that one. No point with an abv like that!
Didn't the 16 just win a big spirits competition?
Did it?
You have to start selling orchids?
oh. nevermind.
Gflorist. Another side hustle. 😉🥃
Not worth paying $60 in my market. Compared to $65 for Glenallachie!
I prefer this. 😉🥃
Why you keep on reviewing Diageo products???
Trying to get them all out of the way. Pretty much done with all my bottles from them, aside from a Talisker 25 review next week. 🥃
Whisky gig: so yeah im looking at another Diageo product today
Also whisky gig: wtf Diageo poor specs and high price?
*surprised pikachu*
Nobody's surprised, but they still get a wtf every time. 😉🥃
@@Gwhisky As they should - just a friendly poke. ;) Maybe you should have a specific and seperate "Diageo button" you can slam when needed
Hah not a bad idea! 🥃
Well, if I give enough time and attention I'd be able to take something good from any whisky, provided it is not some absolute crap. Mortlach 12 is far from being a crap whisky, but is at least as far from being a dram with at least half decent price/quality ratio. In Bulgaria I'd have to part with nearly 70 euroa for a bottle of it. Low ABV, chill-filtered and colored. No way. Especially when I can buy a bottle of Signatory 14 yo Mortlach for 52-53 euros. Yes it is matured in ex-bourbon hogsheads only, refill even, but is 46%, NCF, non colored and very, very tasty.
More than a year ago I have opened a bottle of previous release from the same series, 13yo Mortlach and so far I have thoroughly enjoyed every drop of it.
Sorry, but I have no time, liver and money to indulge mediocrity and cynicism of greedy merchants and corporate multinationals.
Cheers!
Totally fair. €70? Damn... That's definitely way too much for this bottle, and generally the IBs are better. Cheers, buddy!
