I was manager of Bromley sports centre in the mall , the owner was Eric Fright , a lovely guy that played football in his time for Bromley Town . I was there in the mid 1970's , but this video is how I remember the town . As a young kid we would all meet in The Swan & Mitre pub at night , probably 8 or 10 of us and all had big ideas of how we was all going to get rich . One night one of the guys told us he had just bought some property , we thought he had managed to buy a house . He had bought 5 or 6 warehouses on the Docks . We asked , what are you going to do with them ? He said I'm going to live in them , we all fell about laughing . At that time you could not give the warehouses away as the docks had closed down . I few years later he was a multi millionaire .
I've got a theory that pedestrianisation killed the high street. High streets used to thrive with all the hustle and bustle. People driving past playing the latest tunes out the car window. You could park outside the shop you wanted to do to and run in and out in a few minutes it all just seemed more alive
+mikey p Hi Mike, so far no, but anything good we find, the video, or the link to it, is added to our facebook page at facebook.com/bromleygloss. Like out FB page for updates. We add all kinds of stuff about the borough of Bromley and there abouts, so will certainly keep an eye out for vintage Bexleyheath footage and pics.

Very good footage, thanks.
Was in Bromley in 2014. I think that's the same road works.
Cool music! I lived here in the late 60’s!
Great footage of old Bromley, so good you are bringing all this stuff back to life Bromley Gloss!

Ann Other I think it makes all the shops try to stay in that area. The rest of the high street suffers and dies
Yep, Pedestrianisation kills any high street.
What about Knobs and Knockers lol, thank you for the memories, I just started drinking in the star and garter, then ruby murray opposite.
Anyone know what shop used to be there before JD sports

Very nice. But most of those people are dead now.
I remember the Tandoori where the Indian guy made racist jokes.
Ally Walters mr modi owned the bromley tandoor
Citric Big t that’s the guy. Wow that was a long time ago
Black people didn't reach Bromley till the 90s..
I still remember even around 1998 ish there wasn't many around in Bromley. You had to go Lewisham.
Pathetic!
