The main problem with short form videos is it's all so disposable and forgettable. I have really great memories of the content on this channel. Whether it's the early videos re-creating fast food with your brother or more recent-ish stuff like the sandwich series or the air fryer content it's just stuff that I remember and use in real life.
yeah this is a great point and something I feel when I watch short vs long content. Well summed up!
Also, shorts can't be saved to playlists for later. They contain no description - you will never get the recipe. You can't, on UA-cam, rewind a bit to rewatch what you missed, no, you have to watch the whole thing, start over, oh you missed it again, start over...
I hate shorts. But I feel much alone in this.
@@ProHomeCooks I wish you still made fast food recreations and you were still making videos with Josh and I wish he didn't go off the deep end and become a vegan. And uninstall and universally condemn TikTok.
I really enjoyed your early videos of cooking with your brother, squished into that little kitchen. And, I usually put on longer form YT video while I'm doing something else (laundry, meal prep, tub bath, or winding down before going to sleep) - or - if I want to learn how to do something and need to pause frequently and rewind.
So true. I never follow the reel/tiktok food creators for long because they are mostly all flash and less substance. Love Owen but he was actually someone I unfollowed.
I also dislike that the focus shifts from the food to the physical appeal of the creator. So your feed is full of good looking popular chefs/cooks/food creators, and it's impossible to tap into the market of creators who may actually have substantial shortform content but they just aren't models or popular. Severe problem with tiktok and ig and I wish they would just let us see more variety.
For me, I can watch hours of long form channels I subscribe to and feel like I got something from it. Then I watch 10 minutes of suggested shorts and feel like I've wasted my life.
Precisely!!!
I agree! It's why I don't want TikTok.
Same!
Oh that's exactly how I feel!
Yes, shorts suck! I will not watch them regardless of the content.
Short form media is not for me, which is why I never joined TikTok and left Instagram (thanks, Reels). UA-cam used to be my haven, but now all of my favorite content creators are doing shorts. I get that TikTok is popular and people increasingly have shorter attention spans, but I’m getting more and more annoyed with my subscription feed being jammed up with shorts. I consume most content via my TV apps so being force-fed stuff that is intended for mobile viewing is getting out of control. At least give a better option to disable shorts….I want to watch a descriptive video with commentary, not 44 seconds of nonsense.
God bless you
agreed, some shorts are ok... they can 'draw in', but largely frustrating if looking for ideas on wth to eat....
just block all shorts with addons, there are tons of them for any browser
I do wonder WHY these shorts (say on UA-cam) are created in portrait form rather than landscape. I use a laptop or a cell phone - I can turn the cell on its side to view better visuals in landscape mode. FILLS THE SCREEN!
Thanks for the suggestions on web browsers. I use the AppleTV for steaming, though. I would like an overall setting to block shorts across all platforms - TV, browser, and mobile.
I wouldn't be bothered by short form videos if they weren't hurting the long form ones, which I love. UA-cam is basically forcing their creators to do this shit, because they're terrified of tiktok. I hope the short videos turn out to be just another fad, but I don't think they are.
I sure hope so! I feel the same way.
100% agree!
Studies show that short form content seriously messes up the attention span; I personally don't view this topic as a simple choice related to preference in entertainment form but rather a serious decision related to my health. Props to the creators of those short videos because they ARE creative and interesting, but I won't become a scrolling addicted zombie just for grilled cheese videos. Bring on the 1 hour long videos, It's perfect, and allows the creator to go in depth.
This is so true! While I've been dealing with ADHD since pre-social media days, it has really not been helpful and I've had to step away. I really feel for young people now. People joke that ADHD is so common, but how can it not be when every form of internet use is made to exacerbate the symptoms!
@@thenopedetective Just massive amounts of over-stimulation whether mental or physical is causing so many problems. Even long videos aren't immune as many video creators will edit out every um, uh, or other pause to condense their video only to come across like some kind of Max Headroom-style auctioneer. People really just need to slow down in general. Life is only a race if you make it one, and race cars don't last very long. We have time.
The generation of kids that are consuming almost all their content through TikTok is gonna be interesting to see.
@@bstokeling91 Can't be any worse than lead poisoning.
this video is a bit of a shift from the standard cooking content you usually see on this channel. I find these changes in the media landscape equally overwhelming and fascinating at the same time and thought I would bring you along on my journey as I try to digest these changes. Would love to hear your own thoughts below 🤟
Thank you for sharing! I like seeing stuff like this, behind the scenes stuff
An interesting subject that was presented very well. (Along is one word) 🙂
love everything u do
I feel like on UA-cam and TikTok a lot of the time it's not about the food it's about having a gimmick but I do like the creators that you chose to feature... Also I'm looking for some noise cancelling headphones, may I ask which ones you use?
I have balanced opinion on this I think. Shorts are basically the cancer of the Internet that is trying to kill long form video, also orientation is all wrong. Shorts are for people that couldn't figure out that they can rotate their phones...
Hey Mike. Just keep doing what you are doing. I consume content for 80% information and 20% entertainment. I love how your content is a mixture of trial and error cooking, testing out theories, making mistakes and correcting them, playing with ideas.... the list goes on. I see no reason for you to change anything that you do currently. Keep up the good work, my man!
There's room for both long form and short form content, and I think it's a mistake that YT is pushing shorts so much. We don't need it to become another version of TikTok. I was so fed up with my cluttered YT feed I even went so far as to installing a customized script to block all shorts.
Anyway, thank you for this excellent video and your long form content!
hah love it! yeah I think UA-cam should make it a little more feasible to pick your own video video rather than push shorts on people.
@@ProHomeCooks It's crazy to me that they don't have a function where you can toggle between shorts or regular videos. Because the site with shorts was nearly inoperable for me. It felt like 20 shorts for every 1 regular video. But as the comments sections of your video shows, there are still plenty of us here for long form and YT can pry 30-60 min videos out of our cold dead hands lol.
i agree, both forms of cooking media is important
Yes, me too! Log form videos allow such growth and story telling. It's sad that so many feel the need to switch to shorts (though I get it given its far less time consuming with more payoff).
How can I get a script to disable the shorts?
I have to say my biggest problem with short form content is that it always left me wanting more. Not more content exactly, but for more depth and insight. This is for all short form content and I'm always disappointed when I stumble on a UA-cam short I really like and see that that's all the channel posts
Ann Reardon explains this perfectly in her videos explaining how compilation content farm videos, like 5-Minute Crafts, incentivize you to keep clicking on thier videos. She says that they pose a question at the beginning, stimulate your curiosity and your dopamine response, but then NEVER actually answer the question. So then you feel left unsatisfied and need to keep clicking. It's a genius tactic for clickbait, but not very satisfying as a content consumer. And it wastes SO much time!
I really enjoy sitting back and relaxing with a glass of wine to watch a few of your videos. It is sharing a passion of cooking and the science behind it and I would really miss your show if was not there anymore. Never change 😊😋
@Brewmacker ! YES!!!
This!!! I’ve learned so much watching him cook over the years. He’s the reason I finally bought an air fryer.
I've got no problem with short content, especially when it comes to the food content space. They're really entertaining.
However, I'll forever love long form content. Channels like Adam Ragusea, Jason Farmer and of course, this one, that break down the entire cooking process so you understand just what it is you're doing, and why you're doing it will forever be my favourites.
I watch short form content for entertainment, and watch long form for education, recipes and tips.
I’m 27 and have been watching your channel for several months now. While multiple factors keep me coming back (personality, creativity, from scratch & improvisational cooking, health consciousness), I especially appreciate the low-barrier-to-entry educational aspect of it. For example, your complete guide to fermentation is the probably simplest explanation on fermenting that I have ever heard. After watching that video I thought “oh that’s it?? I can totally do that!” I have never not watched one of your videos because of the view length. The information provided and the entertaining, personable delivery make the view time worth it.
I’ve never heard anyone say this, but short form can feel like a waste of time to me. Videos with super fast cuts are overwhelming. The information is coming at me so fast I don’t see what’s going on. I think it’s worth repeating this so I will - I don’t actually see the visuals put before me when I watch super fast cut content. God forbid trying to digest it. I want to spend the time it takes to engage with the information and learn something.
I understand the logic. Younger viewers want short form, younger viewers are watching more than other age groups; therefore, creators make short form to keep their businesses flourishing. But if a “young” viewer is a 15-25 year old, that makes an “older” at least 26 years old. Thats still a young person, and that viewer still has a LOT of years of patronage left in them.
It can’t be an easy decision for content creators, especially when audience faithfulness and algorithmic relevance juxtapose each other. Thank you for opening up this conversation. If you plan to have more conversations like this, I am happy to be a part.
You missed the short form window by 24ish months!?! Your words are so valid. I'm a 54 yrs old French Canadian and I feel soothed that you feel as I do.
I agree 100%
TikTok is picking up the internets torch and ruining what is left of peoples attention spans
don't tell me 10 min youtube video is your definition of long attention spans as long as you're using the internet there is no attention span
@@blee04524 maybe if you paid more attention you would read what I actually wrote and understand it.
@@blee04524you missed their point, also this video currently is 22 mins lol
Mike we still like and need you and your videos. I have been a fan since you and your bother were publishing stuff way back. I'm inspired by what you have done and still do. Keep it up. Thanks.
I'm right here with you. I started my channel a decade ago when none of this existed and we could barely monetize our videos. Tiktok makes no sense to me
I watch these long form videos all the time. Honestly, I find myself "watching" hour long sourdough videos. An 18 minute video is fantastic as well. I just put my earbuds in turn it on and set my phone on the counter while I clean my kitchen or prep food for the next day after my kid goes to bed. I do it every night. Whether it's your content or other content. I would never go on tiktok and look for food education videos because I want to become a better cook and I can't imagine learning that from tiktoc, but I can imagine learning it from UA-cam.
I also see TikTok food content as quick entertainment with fast editing and one second cuts from thing to thing. I don't get a lot out of it at the end of the day.
🙌👏👏👏
I prefer longer videos. I ll admit I learnt a lot about cooking techniques which I didnt understand reasons behind until you explain why its done. Love it!
Such an interesting discussion 😊 Loved that you included interviews with tik tok creators for them to offer their perspective 👌🏾 I personally enjoy both long and short-form content.. it really just depends on my mood 😅
I do prefer longer videos too. Thanks.
I HATE short videos.
The only use I've had for them is finding new shows / channels / podcasts. With a 30 second clip I might find I'd want to see more, where searching normally on UA-cam I might not have given a 20 minute video a chance.
Agreed.
I only came across your page and I must say - just love the way how you do your videos. Love the animations and also the extra insights. Also love it that your content is original and I feel like the short form content is good to find new interests or quick fixes but I can learn and take away much more from long form content ☺
nah, none of those come close to your content....i don't need anything fancy when it comes to cooking. keep doing what you're doing Mike G.
Tik tok and short format videos are fully built on FOMO and feeding on your attention and time.
Its basically facebook all over again but worse.
Please keep making these long videos 😊 I hate TikTok
I like tiktok cooking videos for inspiration but I don’t trust the recipes. I’ve cooked a few and they come out so badly so I just stick to the people I trust on UA-cam (including you!)
Definitely would love to hear more like this from you! You ask really good questions, have access to such a wide range of people, a podcast diving into these food-adjacent topics would be so dope.
I don’t understand how short form media is as successful as it is. I like the creator to go in depth and I also like to passively learn it while I’m doing something else (washing dishes, folding clothes, cooking).
Thanks for this. Confirms that TikTok isn't for me. Love your content!
I got a headache watching that first example with all the goofy sound effects and the constant cuts.
Dude, one of the best videos I’ve seen from your channel! I loved your viewpoint looking into this. Cooks and content creators alike share the need to find new and creative ways to evolve their style.
1 mil subscribers on UA-cam doesn't equal money. If you're building on UA-cam using shorts you're making penny's as compared to long form dollars. The Korean Vegan was right, you want to get famous, go on TikTok, you want to make money consistently, then go long form on UA-cam.
HHHHHHHATED the short cut at the end (though the bread looked epic!) LOVE the video though. So interesting! My attention span hasn't been destroyed by consuming short form media. I still appreciate people with well formed opinions who make effort and tell stories. I've even got a browser extension for youtube that makes all YT Shorts content invisible because I hate the speed, lack of effort and sweet mother in heaven - watching a vertical camera angle on a horizontal screen. The fact than any tiny thing you think of can be considered "content" is exactly what I hate about it, it's mindless and meaningless and time absorbing and killing brain cells. I watch what I choose purposefully - I'm not fed by an algorithm. Love YOUR style ProHomeCooks- that's why we;re here!!! Love the fermenting and the gardening and the vinegars etc... I'll be here upvoting and supporting in any way I can until it stops.
I don't use TikTok but have gotten into UA-cam shorts more than I expected. It is crazy to me how quickly shorts channels have gained subscribers vs long form content. Still love long form videos and there's certainly room for both! Good interviews, definitely interesting
You will instantly know that I’m 68, because I hate TikTok. I watch UA-cam, long form videos. I love your content, except the short you attached to the end of this video. Shorts just make me anxious.
This was a neat concept! It's interesting to see how many kinds of food content there are and what goes behind making those. Loved it 👍
I do not like short videos! I really like long form videos. Your content is so great. I loved when you filmed in that tiny little apartment kitchen.
This is such a cool video! I love this interview/personal dialogue style and seeing your thought process! Also, that ASMR on the breadmaking was 🔥!
My biggest question is that if you really want to make something or catch everything in a short / tik tok, whatever, you have to replay it so many times AND they replay automatically unless you stop it. So I wonder to what degree views are actually repeated views for the same viewer?
For cooking videos especially, I need to repeat them and specific parts a lot. 20x that for shorts especially if I can't slow down their speed.
What a great UA-cam video exploring the state of wonderful UA-cam creators and their relationship with TikTok! I love all your videos and find you to be among the best of cooking instructors, so down-to-earth and practical and self-revealing of life as a family man father who still admits that life is all about learning and enjoying the journey along the way. I so love how you approach life and cooking and growing and using foods Thanks for shariing these moments of conversation with some wonderful other cooks you respect. Quite insightful !!
Great video man I was excited to hear the perspective here. Im still not really into shorts yet, haven't found my thing or where I feel comfortable with it. Maybe I just need to start, idk.
I love you’re thoroughness in your vids. I’m not on TikTok
Loving you as an interviewer, terrific content
I enjoyed this video of yours Mike, gave a good insight into the different forms of content. I am in my 50s and enjoy the shorts as entertainment. I was never any good or even liked cooking until Covid. I then saw one food yotube video and out of boredom thought I could try it. I found the joy of cooking. I realized I am a visual learner and if I can visually see it, I can follow it and have it explained, then I can understand it and get it right. I have learned so much this last 3 years following such youtube videos as yours in their long form. Short form does not work for learning how to cook or learn new recipes or cooking concepts, as when trying the recipes, the rewinds are constant to see how something is done. So many thanks to your many videos, I really enjoy cooking now, and eating my own food. Still in the early learning phases, and enjoying the culinary journey. Many thanks
Love the end - very creative but saying that I'm old and I love learning things I don't find that on short form - you and your brother taught me how to cook that is a feat that no one else had been able to do. Thank you
Your videos are much more educational and give amateurs the confidence to try new techniques. Short ticktok videos are good for scrolling through during the morning commute, but your videos actually provide useful advice and information, all broken down in a really digestible way. I remember your induction vs electric vs gas video ultimately swayed my decision over which hob to get. Keep up the good work all the way from the UK
Thank you for having this conversations, it is interesting that there seems to be this generational shift taking place and so quickly. I personally appreciate the long form much more as like to learn from the content. Watching your videos has inspired me to really experiment with a multitude of ingredients I never would have thought of before. Please keep on doing what you do it is so much fun and entertaining.
I like what you said about how doing it slower helps you build an organic audience. I have been watching your channel for about five years now. I go through phases where I am not on UA-cam as often but I always come back and even if you don’t appear on my suggested videos I look you up and watch.
Amazing how you combine and present your love of food, cooking and above all the behind the scenes as in the process, stories etc. As a fellow foodie and soon possible to be cooking in a restaurant, also with a interest for the total experience and the sharing with others, I say thank you! By the way it is in my plan to set up an Instagram account to share my creations. This video is a big stimulans and help.
I really like your short on the 15 minute cherry tomato pasta and I've made it multiple times but I watch all your videos since they are very practical and I do draw inspiration from them in my daily cooking
Short form videos are maddening to use for genuine DETAILED instruction that requires catching the minutiae in both what's said and shown and done.
The quality of information can be top tier but the videos themselves are so hard to use and reuse - archive and refer back to - they're almost impossible to go back to, organize into a usable play list, actually learn and apply from (especially fitness tip shorts)
And there are sooo many.
And you have to replay them to catch much, often most of it, they're too hard to pause, you can't fast forward or rewind to specific parts or change the play speed. You have to replay the whole thing over and over and be quick with the pause button to catch something you keep missing.
I'm not much for the short videos I enjoy the longer versions that teach you multiple ways of cooking food for me too level up my cooking skills. Enjoy the videos keep up the good work.
Your channel is the best !!!! Thanks for what you do and how you do it !!
I am a subscriber to your cooking show, for a few reasons. I like your personality, I love that you make REAL food from REAL ingredients, alot from your own farm/garden. I feel that industrial eating is just around the corner adding to food related illness world wide. Thank you for being you.
As someone who doesn’t have TikTok, I still just watch and love the longer form content on UA-cam. I hope to god it never goes away. I’m here for UA-cam vids :)
I enjoy and learn from your long tutorials! please keep at it?
This is so entertaining and informative. Not only for food creators but for the social concepts themselves. Great work. ❤
Tik Tok reminds me of how TV was depicted in the idiocracy movie
i actually like tiktoks for recipes and food, you can quickly see what the product looks like, the recipe is explained quickly (not these 10+ min videos for a simple recipe) and i can just get the general gist and *vibe* of the food. Its great inspiration too. I still like long form content, but short form has it's place too.
and i love rooted in spice too!
wow thanks for clearing that all up..... had no idea... but love your channel
honestly thank you for this video! As someone who consumes both long form food content and short form, I feel like there can be some confusion about what it means to be a food content creator. I think short form content has its place, but long form content can feel more organic at times. Thank you for delving into this topic with curiosity and fascination rather than hostility!
Yeah, as other people have said here, short form content is fun and easy to consume but a lot of the time it's also incredibly forgettable. After I spend 20 minutes watching shorts I feel like I haven't actually learned anything that will stay with me...whereas with long form videos I can really absorb what I'm watching and remember them. So I guess it depends on what your goals are, as you were saying. But great video and thanks for exploring this topic, it is very interesting to see how fast things are changing!
I'm going to agree with Matt. I think you need a mix of both. Trying to figure it all out as well. Best of luck in your journey.
Excellent video, good interviews and break downs. Please continue with similar content and never stop making long videos - shorts are so superficial. Thanks!
Incredible video -- great overview, awesome interviews. I myself am cusp Gen Z but find myself more interested in longer-form content -- but I still find the value of shorter bits, in the easier-to-share, easier-to-consume, easier-to-browse type of ways. Still trying to figure out how to bridge that gap.
Personally, I'll be steering clear of TikTok still because of my disinterest in getting sucked into the endless scroll -- same reason why I use UA-cam with incredibly restrictive extensions, to prevent any recommended videos or beyond. It's subscriptions only over here.
This was a super interesting video, highlighted by including your bread short at the end for contrast. For myself, I watch your long content for learning how to be a better cook. I can't learn that in 60-secs. But I also love your bread video purely as eye candy and entertainment - two totally different reasons for watching. If we're just talking about number of views, short form will always win, but if your mission isn't simply views but engagement and teaching people to cook, long-form is the winner. I can't imagine shorts are an effective tool for clicks to purchase cooking tools or even revenue generation on the platform, but that's a whole other conversation...
Your guests actually say out loud what many of us think about short form... That it feels undeserved or unreal, yet still highly entertaining. That they want to do UA-cam longform, but they also realize that they're created a beast that has to be fed. I only started my cooking channel 6 months ago, and I feel pressure to make shorts, but don't have the time or interest to invest. I'm curious though, so thank you for making this video. It helped. I slammed that play button when I saw you had a new video up and was excited! True, it was a little different than normal - But hey, I'd watch anything you make anyway. lol
I don't and won't use TikTok. You probably know why. I would rather have the long format anyway as it really makes things less confusing for me. Along with all the other content not related to food , the videos I watch are very entertaining to me. The super quick videos leave me wanting more. Even though I would never do some of the things that you do, I really enjoy learning about them. You're a great teacher. Keep up the good work!
Love this content style! I’d appreciate more of this!
I enjoyed this shift away from cooking and a bit more introspection. I've been watching you since the Brothers Green days, and I've had a UA-cam channel even longer than that, so as a fellow oldhead, I fully empathize with the overwhelming growth of this landscape. It's bonkers to me how a channel that mostly posts 1 minute shorts can grow to 1 million followers in less than a year. I remember when hitting 1 mill was an EVENT! These kids have it easy lol
great video. love your approach and ethos about your work.
I don't think UA-cam cooking videos are going anywhere. We appreciate your work.
Never understood Tik Tok and much of the short form videos, at least on UA-cam shorts, many come from Tick Tok but much of that is too short, too cute and not terribly entertaining outside of a quick swipe while on the potty for instance. Nothing to digest in my view.
Your videos I can absorb and understand and get new ideas from. The same for Kenji Lopez Alt, Anti Chef, the old stalwarts like America's Test Kitchen, Cooks Country (yes, they both are on PBS), Julia Child etc and it was people like Julia that I learned much of what I know about cooking early on (and the late Jeff Smith, never completely got Graham Kerr).
I have been hearing at least a rumor (?) about Tik Tok that it'll be banned or will go away or something like that. If true, I'd not miss it.
BTW, I like your format and it often inspires me, as does another contemporary, Carla Lalli Music's channel, she was with Bon Appitit until a couple of years ago when pulled a fast one with their "non white" employees and a bunch of the cast left, telling BA (conde nast) to take a hike and they ditched Dan Rappaport in the process. Many went on to do their own stuff on YT.
I love your normal long form content. Keep doing you.
I love food TikTok for the instant info (no long drawn out blog-style explanations) without ads. I still watch YT, but I've honed down to tried and true content creators that I've watched for years that I feel make the ads worthwhile.
I like having the long form. You and others taught me how to cook tasty meals. I love tiktok for getting ideas for random meals. Like I never know what to make for meals. I can use anything in my pantry to make meals, and it feels like magic. I just like getting inspiration on tiktok.
TikTok/YT shorts are fine for quick meme food videos, but I don't like watching them to get real cooking content
Mike, your channel and content are so inspiring, thoughtful, creative and educational. I had a UA-cam channel for a couple years. It is a LOT of work and I don’t think people realize how much effort it takes to create content and come up with new content. I don’t watch TV, I watch videos, like yours that educate AND entertain me. I get annoyed by the shorts, they are a waste of my time. I don’t watch Tik Tok because that is also a waste of my time. I choose UA-cam over TV because I can watch what I want when I want and it’s fun and educational, making it worth my time. I love your channel, your content, personality and all you do. Please don’t give up. You’re pretty awesome at it.
Great video! The thing with short videos on food is that the recepies have to be really simple and self explanatory by the images. I don't have TikTok but I have enjoyed and tried some from shorts on Instagram and Facebook. And yes, I agreed with them that it might be the future and preferred format for the new geberations. I believe your content goes beyond recepies, it talks about managing the everyday cooking and for me, is of great relevance!
The meta content about content is exactly why I love consuming your content. You dig? This thoughtfulness and intention and passion for detail is exactly why I’m a huge fan of your work.
I found this video super interesting. I've followed your channel for a few years and I've enjoyed a lot of your content. I'm an older watcher, and I've dabbled in tictoc but I ended up deleting it. Among other things, I really hated the cooking content. It goes by so fast and there aren't detailed ingredient lists or cooking techniques. I want to see how to make the food with exact amounts of everything so I can do it too! That's why I stick with UA-cam and your channel. 😊
Your short nailed it! Great job👍🏻
TikTok live streams are much better. I find myself watching PrettyAlright every day( except on Wednesday when Dylan is off)
But I still prefer the long form of UA-cam!
Not so much the live streams.
Funny, huh?
Keep doing what you do! My sourdough has improved because of your videos😊
The ironic thing is I wish this video was longer 😂 this is such an interesting topic!!
I prefer medium to long form content, the fast paced stressed me out more than it relaxes/makes me learn something like long form content does.
This video was so interesting to me. I get why there needs to be short form content on UA-cam, but I don’t have to like it. Hahaha! 🤓I actually learn from you and use the information you put out regularly. I am approaching 60 years old so that has a lot to do with it. I don’t quite “get” Tic Tok but I understand the appeal. In any event, keep doing what you’re doing cuz you’re awesome!!
I love long videos. Don’t stop making them!
This was very interesting. Thanks from Colorado, killer closer!
I'm 26, watch a ton of youtube, and am only looking for long form content. Just one data point for ya!
Do whatever you need to stay happy and thrive, hopefully I'll be there with you. Just subbed, let's hit that 4M!!
I prefer your long videos. I love your channel. Keep it going, please don't change.
Well done, Mr ! Well done with that last bit. Well done! 😘
I watch TT a lot. When I'm bored of scrolling, I go to YT. Like you a lot but this video I had to come back a lot. Can't keep up sometimes and my attention is lost. I like both, TT and YT. While I eat, have to watch TT cooking videos and fall asleep watching your videos and Chlebowski :D so
I have a been a subscriber for years and can say I've honestly enjoy the longer form videos much better, especially for cooking. Because of you I now own a Ooni Karu 16 and a Cosori air fryer (Great products BTW, thanks for recommending). I've enjoyed some of your long play things like fermentation, your garden, etc that span across videos. I understand if this is your livelihood you need to adapt to pay the bills. My issue with the shorts, which was also mentioned in this video, is there is no good jumping off point from short to long.
I'm also a practitioner of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and someone I follow has really good shorts but the problems are as follows:
1. Can not jump forward/back, you just have to watch on a loop, when it's done it typically auto progresses to the next thing
2. Vertical video, I have an ultrawide 34 monitor, so shorts look terrible on there, they consumer about 10% of the screen real estate, they may work well for mobile, I'm sure youtube reports those stats to you
3. Can't slow down or speed up videos to watch a technique or have time to absorb more dense information or rewatch again at a higher speed for reference
4. Videos lack encoding information on the timeline, for instance this video you posted has sections I can clearly see on the progress bar and can jump or come back to for reference
5. Can't link to a specific time window
6. On popular videos can't see the graph of popular highlights like you can on youtube videos
7. Embedded videos or links to other relevant content within the video, maybe your own previous video you made, etc
Maybe will all the new LLMs (GPT, etc), someone, hopefully maybe even youtube will come up with a way that you can make a full length video but then that tool could basically distill that video into a short. To me a short feels like a trailer for a movie, a good way to draw attention but will never be the same as actually watching the movie.
wow you're a very good interviewer, mike! I'd love to see you make more interviews with other content creators :)
This is really great! Even though you're not really cooking anything in this video I really don't care. In the end, really this is just all about creating interesting content and I think you really succeeded here.
Talking about making fast/shorts videos, even with your videos.
I loved those videos that you used to do, that was only 1 recipe but showing every step and doing everything from scratch.
I liked more than one video with 5 easy fast recipes. But I still love the videos, never miss one 😅.
And I understand that your life nowadays are busier than back then.
I definitely agree your conclusion at the end. To stay relevant you should be doing both, and tik tok should really only be used as a bridge to other things, like youtube, sales of products, or potential brand and tv show deals. I liked the short you made, but you should add different angles during the process. It keeps viewers engaged.
I hate tiktok. I don't want to watch this fast, campy stuff. The speed gives me anxiety - seriously! I Love your no nonsense channel. blah. I hope you stay here, I will keep watching.
Love this video and seeing something different from you :)
Goddamn, Matt is such a clever guy, amazing interview.
The most interesting and accurate comment was about the different age brackets for short form vs. long form videos. I generally prefer long form because I’m replacing my old Food Network days. I also don’t like sound on when using my phone, so I don’t get the appeal of many short form videos because I don’t get the ASMR part. I like some short form and will intentionally turn on the sound, but I’m less likely to subscribe. I’ve actually stopped watching a few UA-cam channels because they switched to mostly shorts, which I see on Instagram and I don’t get to watch their full cooking videos anymore. It feels like a loss to me. Shorts feel like a trailer. They can be great, but I want to see the full show. (fwiw I’m 34, so definitely the older bracket, though my mom loves TikTok)
I really like the short cooking TikTok videos because I’m not looking for a step by step recipe usually. Just looking for a creative injection to get my headspace right for cooking
I'm not on TikTok, but I enjoy both forms of content and think there's space for both, I dunno why people seem so upset by it. Sometimes I want a long form video to sit down and watch while I eat or what have you and sometimes a funny 60 second video hits the spot. Great video and way to cheat the system by including your short form stuff in a main video. Keep it up and you'll have the short form haters hooked in no time!😂
